UNREAL REALITIES

IntroductionThe purpose of the presentation is to list the different types of Alternative Realities using definitions and an appropriate terminology to make it understandable to an audience of non technical people.

What is reality?The most common meaning of real is something that actually exists. What appears before you.

Alternative RealitiesYou can distort reality:

elements of reality until you arrive to create a completely alternative one.

ImmersivityIt is one of the alternative realities feature showing the involvement and stimulation of the user's senses:

● Scuba diving is more immersive than holiday photos● A 3D movie is more immersive than a traditional one

In other words, it is a scale that measures how much the distortions of reality are perceived by the user as real.

Digital RealitiesThese are the Alternative Realities obtained with digital tools:

● Augmented Reality● Mixed Reality● Virtual Reality● “Side Reality”

Augmented Reality - OverlappingAugmented Reality is what the user sees in front of him, with a overlapped digitized element.

Not Immersive Augmented RealityYou can see it through applications by using the smartphone camera.

Immersive Augmented RealityThanks to some binocular visors it is possible to overlap reality with digital elements.

Mixed Reality - AddingThe real component and the virtual one are fused together. The user moves simultaneously in the real scene and in the digital one.

Not Immersive Mixed RealityThanks to smartphones or tablets equipped with motion and depth sensors.

Immersive Mixed RealityThanks to special visors equipped with motion and depth sensors.

Virtual Reality - ReplacingVirtual: not real, simulated.It is the full simulation of a real environment.

Immersive Virtual RealityTaking advantage of specific binocular devices the user is "immersed" in a totally digitized environment.

Side Reality - SuperimposingDigital information is displayed in a peripheral section of the user's visual field.
