Population Statistics

Why do some places “feel” like there are too many people (space, resources)?

TPS

Each group will have one person give their reason for choosing their side and then pick someone from another group (a new person needs to speak each time)

Summarize the person’s point that went before you and respectfully make your point

You may switch groups if someone persuades you Practice discussion norms: eye contact, using

people’s names, academic language/sentence stems, respectful discourse, one person at a time, watch air time, focus on activity…not other distractions

Read the statements and move to one of the signs posted

The Earth can support seven billion people now and will be able to support any number of humans in the future.

In an effort to feed a population of seven billion, people in developed countries should reduce the amount of food they eat

Governments should be able make laws to limit the number of children that couples can have.

Even though I am only one person in seven billion, I still have a responsibility to keep the Earth healthy; what I do makes a difference.

Facts/evidence Interpretation/analysis

Use evidence from the video and activities: Do you think there are too many people in the world (or specific areas of the world)? Do you believe that the earth can support a growing population? Why/why not? What are some factors to consider when thinking about population growth and sustainability?
