RHYME

Two or more words that end with the same soundEx: Slim Jim

Note: In poetry, words that rhyme are often used at the end of a phrase, or sentence.

Ex: “I do not like green eggs, and ham.I do not like them Sam I Am” ~Dr. Seuss

RHYTHM

A repeating pattern of sounds and syllables

Note: In poetry and music, a consistent number of syllables (or beats) are used to help create rhythm. Ex: Mary had a little lamb (7)

Its fleece was white as snow (6) Everywhere that Mary went(7) The lamb was sure to go (6)

IMAGERY

Words an author uses to help the reader visualize and imagine with the senses.Ex: It was a brisk, autumn evening. The wind gently rustled the leaves on the ground, creating a symphony of sights and sounds.

SYMBOL

A word or object that stands for something else.

Ex: a dove is often used as a symbol of peace.

Ex: a snake is often used as a symbol of evil

ASSONANCE

The repetition of vowel sounds

CONSONANCE

The repetition of similar consonant sounds

Ex: shaggy straggly~ from Love that Dog

ALLITERATION

The repetition of a beginning sound

Words that imitate sounds

Ex: zoom

HYPERBOLE

Extreme exaggeration

Ex: I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!

My cat weighs a ton!

IDIOM

A group of words that have a figurative meaning, not a literal one.

Ex: “Out of the blue”- means something that happened unexpectedly.

“In the doghouse”- means in big trouble.

METAPHOR

Comparison of two things without using “like”, or “as”.

Ex: All the world is a stage.

My brother is a human garbage disposal.

SIMILE

A comparison using the words “like” or “as”.

Ex: “you lived your life like a candle in the wind” ~Elton John
