Tuscany itineraries: Montefioralle, Greve and Panzano in Chianti

ITALIAN ESCAPE PRESENTS

ChiantiTuscany’s heritage and gastronomic traditions live on in these ancient hills dotted by vineyards, medieval hamlets, walled towns and fortresses. Stretching between Florence and Siena, the Chianti region is world famous for its wines and luscious landscapes.

MontefiorallePerched on a hill, Montefioralle, the birthplace of the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, is a fortified hamlet close to Greve, so photogenic and enchanting it has been used as a film set.

Food & wineAfter taking in the sights, rest your legs and refuel at a traditional taverna. Savour a glass of Chianti with a plate of artisanal hams and salami. Follow with pasta with boar or ribollita (a tasty Tuscan soup). Finish with apple and pear torta, and fragrant coffee.

GreveConsidered the heart of Tuscany, Greve is a bucolic town boasting a medieval piazza, porticoed buildings and the XI-century church of Santa Croce.

Wine tastingsIf you are into fine wines, visit Greve’s Museo del Vino – a museum where you can learn about and taste local wines – and the Cantine, true ‘Aladdin’s Caves’ for wine lovers.

PanzanoSituated on a high ridge, Panzano offers wonderful panoramic views. You can spot the outline of its castle, incorporated into a church and a private tower house, while you step on remains of the Roman pavement.

Sacred & profaneChianti churches hold masterpieces of sacred art. However, Panzano is famous for Dario Checchini’s butcher shop-cum-restaurant, praised by celebrities like actor Jack Nicholson and chef Jamie Oliver.

Where to stayVilla Le Corti, Greve http://www.italianescape.co.uk/473/profile.html A villa perched on a promontory, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. With a stone-lined pool and manicured gardens, it’s a haven of stylish relaxation.
