Troubled Troubled Seafarers in Seafarers in Troubled SeasTroubled Seas
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), there are at present about 1,500,000 seafarers of various nationalities on board vessels around the world.
A majority of these seafarers come from underdeveloped or developing countries.
The Philippines alone supplies about 25% of the world’s seafarers.
This makes the Philippines the number one supplier of seafarers in the world.
90% of world trade is carried through shipping.
While on board the ship, the seafarer has to contend himself with receiving a very low salary with usually extraordinarily demanding work environment.
