This week we’ll be paying our respects to those who sacrificed their lives so that we could freely speak in Bangla today and learn about the importance of February 21. We will then take a short trip to Peru at Speedy’s Zone (Pg5) and learn about their culture. Be sure to check
out Jonaki and the Treehouse (Pg3), and read the stories we’ve got in our pocket for you. Don’t forget to send me any poems, arts etc at treehouse.dt@dhakatribune.com
Have a great week! loveJonaki

a ride in a CarA simple wish…maybe just to ride the car for once. She knows that she might never have the chance. She also knows that if she gets any closer she might get told off the driver. Not having the chance just leaning on the car - to get closer to the dream a bit. But if she knew education is the key to make all wishes come true.

21Back in the day (1952), Bangladesh was known as East Pakistan, and West Pakistan was what we now call Pakistan. The reason behind this Muslim country being divided is that the people in East Pakistan were mostly Bengali who spoke in Bangla and the people of West Pakistan spoke in Urdu. It wasn't until January 27, 1952, when the governor, General Khawaja Nazimuddin, declared that Urdu would be the national language for the people of both East and West Pakistan. This angered all the Bengali people as they wanted the right to speak in their own language with freedom. So, one of our great leaders, Maulana Bhashani, formed a committee called the “Shorbodolio Kendrio Rashtrobhasha Kormi Porishod” and encouraged all the students of Dhaka University to start protesting against this unfair declaration. On the morning of February 21, the area around Dhaka University was surrounded by armed police. Students tried to break the police line but the police fired tear gas shells at them as a warning. Soon the

police started to fire their weapons and killed a number of students including Abdul Jabbar, Rafiq Uddin, Abul Barkat and Abdus Salam. It is only because of their lost lives that we speak and write
freely in Bangla today. Each year on February 21, we honour their sacrifice by visiting the Shahid Minar that was built in their memory. We will never forget what they have done for us and
no matter what we do, we will never be able to thank them enough for what they have left behind for us.

dreamNo, friends can say anything. I never feel bad.
Anyway, I’ve never seen you here before. Are you new here?” Ethal asked.
“Yes, I came to New York three days ago.” The boy replied.
“Oh, so, welcome to New York!” Ethal said with warmth.
“Thanks! This place made me crazy the first time I came here.”
I also come here every day and watch this amazing place. Love it! By the way, we are strangers and talking like friends. So shouldn’t we actually be friends?” Ethal offered innocently.
“Sure!” said the boy.“Thanks! I am Ethel, Ethal
Caron.” “And I am Daniel Martin!” “Cool! I love to make friends.
Ok, do you live here alone?” asked Ethal.
“Yeah!” “Oh, No! How can you? Tell me
more about you,” Ethal asked with curiosity.
Daniel started explaining, “I was born in Oakland, California, 1993. In a horrible storm, back in 2000, I lost my entire family. No one was alive. Then my Granny brought me here, in New York. She lived here. She brought me up. Two years ago, I completed my graduation in Canada and went to California again.
Ethal listened to Danial in great distress as he continued,
“I was not able to stay there and missed my family very much So, I came here three days ago.”
“You’re now 19 and has completed graduation! Wow! Where’s your Granny now?” Curious Ethal asked.
“Into the sky!” Denial relpied.“Sorry!” Danial continued, “No problem!
Everyone hates her. I do too.” “Do you like the sky?” Asked Ethal. “Hmm. A lot!” “Me too! When someone tells
me something about the sky, I become crazy! Do you have any special feeling about it?” (To be continued)

tHe seventH tigerHowever, all Ashiama wanted was to save Chichi from Amara.
On the other hand Amara forcefully married Chichi but she was still waiting for Ashiama to come. Amara told her over and over again that Ashiama was dead but Chichi would not believe it. She kept saying that Ashiama would come back.
One day, Ashiama finally escaped from the hospital and went to Amara’s hide out to save Chichi. On the way, Ashiama got a heart attack and fell. The doctors, who treated him, found him and took him away to the hospital.
Ashiama’s friends saw the doctors take Ashiama so they followed. The doctor said that he had a heart attack and they needed to operate on him. Since they were close friends, the news made them sad. They went away and as they were walking in the street they saw a guy who looked exactly like Ashiama. They were astonished. That very night they were sitting at a friend’s house when a letter came which said that Ashiama was no more. They all broke into tears. (To be continued)
