• Identifying issues BEFORE crashes occur is critical!

Engineering Concerns

Traffic Safety

Vehicle

RoadwayDriver

• Three main factors influence safety:• Roadway: The physical features of the

roadway including operational features such as signs, markings, and signals

• Driver: Behavior of motorists including speeding, red light running, distracted driving, etc.

• Vehicle: Mechanical/maintenance issues that could contribute to a crash

• Primary focus on Roadway Issues

Engineering Concerns

16

• Roadway Issues:• Roadway departure hazards• Road surface conditions• Narrow roadways and bridges• Railroad crossings• Work zones• Intersections• Roadway design limitations• Roadway access problems• Pedestrian and bicycle traffic

Engineering Concerns

1. Go to: trafficsafetyteam.org

2. Click on: “Roadway Concerns”

Engineering Concerns

18

1. Contact Information:• This is critical if more information is

needed to understand the concern

2. Location Information:• Describe the location• Be as specific as possible… e.g.:

• Blanding Boulevard (SR 21) from Wells Road to Collins Road

Engineering Concerns

19

1. Concern Information:• Type of issue: engineering, education,

enforcement, EMS (check the best fit)• Primary concern (check “other” if none

apply)• Description: Very Important!

• E.g.: Missing/incomplete sidewalks along this segment of Blanding Boulevard and missing pedestrian signals and crosswalk markings at Argyle Forest Blvd., I-295 Eastbound, I-295 Westbound, Lake Gray Blvd., and Hicks Road.
