THE BATTLE OF VIGO BAY / SIR FRANCIS DRAKE ATTACKS ON VIGO
On the evening of 22 October, 1702, the Anglo – Dutch fleet entered the Vigo Bay to attack the Spanish – French fleet. On the morning 29 June, 1589, Sir Francis Drake starts to attack Vigo with a fleet of more than 200 ships.

BAIONA FORTRESS – SILLEIRO CAPE / ARRIVAL SPANISH SOLDIERS

In the fortress of Baiona was imprisoned Afonso Henriques the first
King of Portugal.

GUIMARAES – THE ORIGIN OF PORTUGAL Afonso Henriques defeated his mother Coutess Teresa of Portugalat the
battle of Sao Mamede. Coutess Teresa was imprisoned and exiled by
her son.

TUI – VALENÇA Because they are villages separated by the river Miño, the border line between Portugal and Spain, in their street there are many war histories.

The treasure sank in the bank bay was included by Jules Verne in his novel “twenty thousand leagues under the sea” This house is the only one which remains in good conditions, in the historical quarter center, to Sir Francis Drake attack.

CASTRO FORTRESS / SOTOMAYOR CASTLE
The fortress of the Castro is located in the city of Vigo and was built in the XVII century. The Castle of Soutmaior is a medieval castle built in the XII century.

VILLASOBROSO CASTLE / SAN SEBASTIAN FROTRESS The castle of Villasobroso played an important in the medieval civil wars. The ruins of the fortress of San Sebastian are very close to the hotel.

BAIONA FORTRESS – A GUARDA FORTRESS The fortress of Baiona, erected between the XI and the XVI centuries, is protected by a 3km circle of walls. And the fortress of A Guarda was used in the last war between Spain and Portugal.

CASTRO CALDELAS CASTLE A medieval castle, on top of a mountain, dominating the surrounding area.

TUI FORTRESS – VALENÇA FORTRESS
The valenÇa fortress was built to counterbalance Tui across the river Miño, the natural frontier between Spain and Portugal.

Because of the geographical situation of the city of Vigo and the Spanish
military conflicts the coastal villages mainly and a few from the interior
were forced to built castles and fortresses for a better defence. The
construction period was from the XII until the XVII century. For people
passionate of this kind of buildings is an exceptional opportu- nity to
travel in time to middle ages.
