TIPS AND COUPONS FOR THE WOODWORKER

Recently the resur-gence in barn, pal-let and aged woodreclamation hasgiven us a new de-sign in the finish offurniture. Patina isa natural occurringprocess when thewood ages and

changes color. Driftwood, gray and deep browns in the formof stains, try to give us this patina color in new woods. Whatabout the natural, true aged look? Some finish techniques haveturned to oxidation of steel with vinegar, while others take topure acids to achieve an aged patina. We do not always haveaccess to aged wooden planks, however we do want the patinathese boards contain to make beautiful aged projects.

Klingspor's Woodworking Shop is proud to offer a new fin-ishing product for the patina process. Pioneer Patina is as easyas 1-2-3! Just mix the powder packets into water, let sit for fiveminutes, then apply and let dry. It's so easy anyone who hasever made Tang can pull it off. Not only easy but this patinadoesn't involve harsh chemicals. The patina process will con-tinue to deepen and darken after it's dried. If you want to stopthe process you will need to cover with a UV inhibitor finish.Once you are done, you can easily rinse off or wash any appli-cators with soap & water. Directions:• Mix the 1 gallon powder concentratepackage (20 grams) with 1 gallon ofwater.The temperature of the water does notmatter.• Once mixed let the solution sit for 5minutes. After 5 minutes test on smallarea.• Using a brush, roller or sprayer coverthe boards with the solution, ensuring

the entire board is completelywet. Let dry.

Coverage:1 gallon- 150-200 sf

Application precautions:May stain hands, clothes,other building materials suchas stucco, concrete, windowframes etc. Use our Black Ni-trile Gloves (AE66518 $19.95)or Nitrile Gloves (AE18002$15.95).

SPECIAL NOTE: Pine woodspecies will need rain andsunshine in order to maturethe patina quickly.

Final Top Coats:You can finish with any top coat available.The maturing process will continue withUV rays from the sun. If you have reacheda desired amount of patina and want tostop the process, finish with a UV inhibitoror marine finish. We suggest General Fin-ishes Exterior 450 (GF90055 $25.95) orWaterlox Marine Finish (WX39400 $42.95)

Clean up: Use soap and water.

Storage:Store either the powder concentrate or your mixed solutionin an air tight container. We suggest the E-Z mixing cups (EZ70032$1.95) and Mixing Stick (EZ85100 $1.95)

We get asked time and time again, why would I want a 23ga pin, ratherthan a larger more powerful 18ga brad? Here are some facts about thedifference in 23ga and 18ga.

• The 23ga pin leaves a considerably smaller hole than an 18ga brad, dueto the smaller diameter of 23ga ( .025") vs about .080" for the head of atypical 18ga brad. Because the hole is so much smaller, it can be filledby sanding with 220 grit paper and pushing the sanding dust into the hole.

• On much prefinished work such as trim or moldings, no filling is neces-sary as the small hole disappears in the grain of the wood.

• A 23ga pin can easily be cut on the table or compound miter saw with nodamage to the blade.

• The 23ga pin is the perfect solution for quick clamping jobs like jigs forflush trim work with a router.

When making quick jigs for patternwork, angle or toe the pins towardseach other.

The holding power of the 23ga pindoes not come from having a headbut rather from angling or toeing al-ternating shots towards one an-other. The result is that, whenone attempts to pull fastenedwood apart, the pieces want toslide in 2 different directions atthe same time.
