Science of literacy and learning virtual conference slated for July 29The Sul Ross State Uni-
versity Department of Education invites educa-tors, faculty and leaders to the Science of Literacy and Learning virtual con-ference on July 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The purpose of the conference is to provide educational leaders, K-12 teachers, undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty the opportu-nity for in-depth discus-sions exploring how the science of memory and learning impacts instruc-tional approaches toward
improving literacy and learning outcomes.
Participants will engage in learning expe-riences that focus on the following learning strands: literacy instruc-tion and the diverse learner, effective school improvement systems, bridging literacy and equity through com-munity, and science, technology, reading, engi-neering, arts and math-ematics integration.
“This year we will host a free Zoom professional learning event,” said Jen-
nifer Miller-Ray, edu-cational instructional technology coordinator. “We are scheduled to host five guest speakers, and I’m confident that educa-tors from around the area will benefit from this vir-tual conference.”
Topics and guest speakers include Lead-ing literacy interven-tion by Professor Cynde Wadley, SRSU education adjunct literacy leader and curriculum consul-tant; STEM education throughout the pipeline by Robert Ayala, chair-
man of Southwest Texas Junior College arts and
science and Title V direc-tor; the agility mindset: Raising student out-
comes by Drew Howard, Sweetwater Independent
School District superin-tendent; transitioning a district’s emergency
online learning to a blended model by Paula Wallace, SRSU education adjunct and technology director at Loving ISD; and authentic real-world assessment through ePortfolios and the 4Cs by Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District library student services. Registration is available at https://sites.google.com/view/srsued-ucation/home.
For more information, contact Ray at 432-837-8013 or email jennifer.miller@sulross.edu.
