ITS-YEAR IN REVIEW2009-2010
This year in review is meant to update the Tin University
campus community of this year’s activities by the ITS de-
partment.
1. Over the summer of 2009, ITS implemented the KBox System Manage-
ment Appliance, and the KBox System Deployment Appliance. The KBox
Systems Management Appliance includes asset management, patch manage-
ment, software distribution, and helpdesk ticketing with an integrated self-
service user portal. The System Deployment Appliance allows ITS to perform
inventory assessment, operating system deployment, application distribution,
and computer conguration and recovery.
2. At the begining of the Fall 2009 semester ITS created a new set of more
secure wireless networks and created a digital, paperless wireless registration
form. 01
3. All faculty and sta computers located at the Elyria campus where
upgrade over the summer of 2009.
4. The Bookhouse, 27 South Sandusky St., and Hayes Center for the Art
were fully added to the campus VOIP phone system.
5. Over the summer of 2009 Hertzer classrooms 105
and 112, Hertzer media lab and the Gillmor lobby com-
puters were upgraded with new computers. In addition
the computers were upgraded in the oces of Athletics,
the Business Oce, and Student Life.
6. The old À la carte location in the Gillmor Student Center was con-
verted to a small student computer lab with 6 new computers and a new
high- volume, heavy duty printer.
7. The new Living Learning Community appartments were brought
online and connected back to campus via ber optic connection. In addi-02
03
tion both buildings were outtted with wireless internet and one classroom
each with a new computer and projector.
8. The Seitz board room was brought onto the campus wireless net-
work and a new short throw projector was installed.
9. Beginning in 2010 ITS began overseeing
campus copier responsiblities. A new contract
was signed with Perry Corp. and all the campus
copiers were replaced with brand new Konica
Minolta copiers. In addition some of these copi-
ers also replaced outdated fax machince as well.
10. In Fall 2009 ITS along with the Registrar's oce and Academic
Aairs, in order to address the concern of the H1N1 virus, set up eCom-
panion courses for all seated courses. The purpose of doing this for both
Fall and Spring courses was to ensure that faculty and students could
04
continue their coursework should the H1N1 virus shut down the univer-
sity. Though we were fortunate enough to avoid this situation, we were
able to get more faculty use to using the platform as a companion to
seated courses.
11. Through 2009-2010 ITS continued working
with faculty to enhance eCollege courses. We
participated in several seated and online training sessions to help faculty
get better acquainted with eCollege. Areas of focus included course
development, Class Live Pro training and trouble shooting course prob-
lems.
12. ITS also brought on the eCollege Evaluation system for all Online
courses. All areas of study are now using this evaluation platform for
faculty and course evaluations
13. Extended the Toledo network include a third store front.
05
14. Two new redundant webmail servers were brought online to replace
the previous outdated versions of webmail.
15. The main classroom building computer lab underwent a memory
upgrade where extra RAM was installed in the machines.
16. To prepare for the PowerCampus implementation several new tech-
nologies are being implemented. One is a VMWare Virtual infrastructure and
the other is a Disaster Recovery Site. The VMware environment consists of 3
physical host servers running ESX3.5. These machines are hosting 6 vrtual
Windows 2003 servers running various the various applications needed to
support the new PowerCampus SIS. The VMware environment allows us to
consolidate physical servers to better use the resources of the servers as well
as to conserve energy by using less electricity
and creating less heat for the air conditioning.
The environment also provides high availability
06
for the applications as the virtual machines can continue to run even if a
host fails or needs to be taken down for maintenance. This environment is
also highly scalable to support many more applications in the future.
In Columbus we have a secondary location called our disaster recovery site.
This site contains a more or less identical computer conguration as is here
on main campus. This site will host our data backups as well as provide the
capability to recover from a catastrophic disaster should the Tin location
be destroyed.
17. In addition to PowerCampus, ITS implemented PowerFaids which is a
client/server based Financial Aid software created by College Board that
runs on MS SQL Server. The software allows for automated packaging that is
exponentially increasing the speed and eciency at which the Financial Aid
oce can operate.
18. Along with PowerFaids, Webclient is the web-based interface for sta
07
members to obtain view only access into the PowerFAIDs database. This
allows recruiters and other sta who interact with the students to see the
students’ nancial aid so as to be better informed and able to answer the
students’ questions.
19. Another addition to PowerFaids is Netpartner. Netpartner is the
web-based interface for PowerFAIDs that allows the student to view, accept
and change their awards. This will replace the current externally hosted
system (Your Electronic Award) which is currently used.
20. Beginning in 2010 ITS worked with Academic Aairs to
bring all seated course evaluations online. Utilizing MyTU we
are now oering a "green" alternative to paper evaluations for
seated classes. Students logged into MyTU for evaluations for
the rst time this Spring.
