C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin

And cannot free ourselves.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

By what we have done

And by what we have failed to do.

We have not loved you with our whole heart,

And we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

We deserve your eternal punishment.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,

Have mercy on us and forgive us.

Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

1ST READING

R: The first reading for the third Sunday of Easter is written in Chapter two of Acts beginning at verse fourteen.

Acts 2:14a,36-41 CEV

Three thousand people repent and are baptised

Acts 2:14a,36-41

14Peter stood with the eleven apostles and spoke in a loud and clear voice to the crowd:

36Everyone in Israel should then know for certain that God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ, even though you put him to death on a cross.

Acts 2:14a,36-41

37When the people heard this, they were very upset. They asked Peter and the other apostles, "Friends, what shall we do?"

38Peter said, "Turn back to God! Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven.

Acts 2:14a,36-41

Then you will be given the Holy Spirit. 39This promise is for you and your children. It is for everyone our Lord God will choose, no matter where they live."

40Peter told them many other things as well.

Acts 2:14a,36-41

Then he said, "I beg you to save yourselves from what will happen to all these evil people."

41On that day about three thousand believed his message and were baptized.

This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 116:1-4,12-19 CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 116.1I love you, LORD! You answered my

prayers. C: 2You paid attention to me, and so I

will pray to you as long as I live.

Psalm 116:1-4,12-19 CEV

R: 3Death attacked from all sides, and I

was captured by its painful chains. But when I was really hurting, C: 4I prayed and said, "LORD, please don't let me die!”

Psalm 116:1-4,12-19 CEV

R: 12What must I give you, LORD, for

being so good to me? C: 13I will pour out an offering of wine

to you, and I will pray in your name because you have saved me.

Psalm 116:1-4,12-19 CEV

R: 14I will keep my promise to you when

your people meet. C: 15You are deeply concerned when

one of your loyal people faces death.

Psalm 116:1-4,12-19 CEV

R: 16I worship you, LORD, just as my

mother did, and you have rescued me from the chains of death.

C: 17I will offer you a sacrifice to show how grateful I am, and I will pray.

Psalm 116:1-4,12-19 CEV

R: 18I will keep my promise to you when

your people 19gather at your temple in Jerusalem

C:. Shout praises to the LORD C: Glory to the Father, and the Son,

and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now and

will be forever. Amen.

SECOND READING

R: The second reading is written in Chapter one of First Peter beginning at verse seventeen.

1 Peter 1:17-23 CEV

Set free by the sacrifice of Christ

1 Peter 1:17-23

17You say that God is your Father, but God doesn't have favourites! He judges all people by what they do.

So you must honour God while you live as strangers here on earth.

18You were rescued from the useless way of life that you learned from your ancestors.

1 Peter 1:17-23

But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don't last forever. 19You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb.

20Christ was chosen even before the world was created, but because of you, he did not come until these last days.

1 Peter 1:17-23

21And when he did come, it was to lead you to have faith in God, who raised him from death and honoured him in a glorious way.

That's why you have put your faith and hope in God. 22You obeyed the truth, and your souls were made pure.

1 Peter 1:17-23

Now you sincerely love each other. But you must keep on loving with all your heart. 23Do this because God has given you new birth by his message that lives on forever.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL

M: The Holy Gospel is written in chapter twenty four of the Gospel according to St Luke beginning at verse thirteen. C: Glory to You, O Lord, raised to live forever.

C: Glory to You, O Lord, raised to live forever. C: Glory to You, O Lord, raised to live forever.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

13That same day two of Jesus' disciples were going to the village of Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

14As they were talking and thinking about what had happened, 15Jesus came near and started walking along beside them. 16But they did not know who he was.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

17Jesus asked them, "What were you talking about as you walked along?"

The two of them stood there looking sad and gloomy. 18Then the one named Cleopas asked Jesus, "Are you the only person from Jerusalem who didn't know what was happening there these last few days?”

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

19"What do you mean?" Jesus asked. They answered: Those things that

happened to Jesus from Nazareth. By what he did and said he showed that he was a powerful prophet, who pleased God and all the people.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

20Then the chief priests and our leaders had him arrested and sentenced to die on a cross.

21We had hoped that he would be the one to set Israel free! But it has already been three days since all this happened.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

22Some women in our group surprised us. They had gone to the tomb early in the morning 23but did not find the body of Jesus. They came back, saying that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive.

24Some men from our group went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they didn't see Jesus either.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

25Then Jesus asked the two disciples, "Why can't you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? 26Didn't you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?”

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

27Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets. 28When the two of them came near the village where they were going, Jesus seemed to be going farther.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

29They begged him, "Stay with us! It's already late, and the sun is going down." So Jesus went into the house to stay with them.

30After Jesus sat down to eat, he took some bread. He blessed it and broke it. Then he gave it to them.

31At once they knew who he was, but he disappeared.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

32They said to each other, "When he talked with us along the road and explained the Scriptures to us, didn't it warm our hearts?"

33So they got right up and returned to Jerusalem. The two disciples found the eleven apostles and the others gathered together.

Luke 24:13-35 CEV

34And they learned from the group that the Lord was really alive and had appeared to Peter. 35Then the disciples from Emmaus told what happened on the road and how they knew he was the Lord when he broke the bread.

This is the Gospel of the LordC: Praise to You, O Lord, raised to live

forever.

Lord of all hopefulness

1. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:

Be there at our waking and give us, we pray,

your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

87

Lord of all hopefulness

2. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:

Be there at our labours and give us, we pray,

your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

88

Lord of all hopefulness

3. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace:

Be there at our homing and give us, we pray,

your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

89

Lord of all hopefulness

4. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:

Be there at our sleeping and give us, we pray,

your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
