My Dear Parishioners,
In our celebration of the Lord’s Day on this 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time we commemorate CATECHETICAL
SUNDAY. The theme of this year’s observance is “Living as Missionary Disciples.” In today’s Gospel we hear the
Lord Jesus speak to His disciples regarding the manner in which they are to live. He tells them a parable so that the
lesson may be better understood by His disciples. The subject is mercy and forgiveness. Jesus wants His followers
to practice these virtues when they are confronted with being wronged by others. Rather than holding onto anger
and retribution they are to grant forgiveness. He gives them a new commandment, “Love one another as I have
loved you. ”The school of discipleship is one to which all the baptized are students. This school is always in session
and graduation from it occurs at death. Yes, we are all LIFE LONG LEARNERS in the school of discipleship. Many
have the erroneous opinion that faith formation (religious education) is only for children. This is an inaccurate
understanding of discipleship. All of us, young, old and everybody in between are students in the school of
discipleship. In our ongoing faith formation we are instructed in the ways of the Lord. Our lessons are found in the
Sacred Scripture and Holy Tradition which provide us with the basis for our application of discipleship in our
everyday life. As we study these subjects we are receiving the faith which comes to us from the Apostles. We are
then called upon to share this faith through our good conduct by living virtuous lives. Life-long learning helps us to
remain open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as we witness to Christ in the world. This week we begin the
religious education programs which were on hiatus during the summer months. Our weekly Bible Studies, faith
formation classes, CCD classes – all resume and I invite you to join in the wonderful opportunities available in our
two Rockaway parishes. Most of these are stationed at Saint Cecilia’s but are open to all at both of our parishes.
Remember, especially you – mom and dad, that our faith formation classes are for all ages. Adults in particular are
called to attend our faith formation gatherings so that they may be better equipped to pass on the faith to our
young people and to witness to the faith in the secular culture in which we live .Our faith formation gatherings not
only provide us with information, but they are also opportunities to share our faith and strengthen our spirituality.
Such gatherings also build community in our parishes and create friendships which are invaluable.
The school of discipleship is now in session and I am waiting to see you in class!
God bless you!
Father Zig

Thursday, October 12th. The ceremony will begin at 7 o’clock in the evening in Saint Cecilia Church with the
praying of the Rosary and the Rosary Society presentation of roses to the image of the Mother of God followed by
an outdoor candle-light procession to the Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary located in front of the church. At the

CHURCH LIGHTING PROJECT – I am happy to report that the response to the appeal for donations to upgrade the lighting in
the church has been very positive. We have reached the number of donors necessary to upgrade each of the chandeliers in the
church. I am most grateful to those who have responded to this appeal. The next phase of the project includes the installation
of a new emergency lighting system in the church in the event of a power failure. We have had occasions when the power has
failed while Holy Mass was taking place. When such instances occur the emergency lighting provides us with the ability to exit
the church in safety. For those who have not yet had the opportunity to make a donation to our church building fund I ask that
you consider doing so as soon as possible. Your offering may be placed in the water jug located at the entrance of the church.
THANK YOU! – Father Zig
