Southern SectionChampionships

On the weekends of May 18th and 25ththe Southern Section gathered at Mt.SACfor its annual Divisional and Master's(State Qualifying) Meets. The Section isdivided up into 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A todetermine team and individual champion·ships for the school size divisions on thefirst weekend,' and the top eight marksqualify on to the Master's competition. Asuper three national records came fromthe two weekends of action, with extraor­dinary relay groups of young ladies fromMuir (Pasadena) and Hawthorne and longhurdler George Porter (Cabrillo, Lompoc)joining the elite group of Southernc:;alpreps who have broken a National Record(both Federation and AII·Time bests).Brian Blutreich (Capistrano Valley) con­tinued his fine weight year with an .AII­Time California best Shot Put (to go alongwith his Discus California record fromearlier this campaign). Henry Thomas(Hawthorne) was not along for the end ofthe season, as the Golden State's All·Time top sprinter was out with an ap·pendectomy the Thursday before the divi­sional meet. The Divisional Meet andsome problems, with the move from Cer·ritos this year and most of the Mt. SACstaff up at Modesto for their JC StateMeet. Two Women's 100m races were runat 110 meters (and then rerun at the rightdistance), and all the Men's Highs raceswere run from a Shuttle hurdle take·offline, making them 109 meters. Those 32athletes (which entailed some prettygood travei time for some from thisspread out section) reran the event thefollowing Wednesday.

Both Muir and Hawthorne have speedto burn on the Women's side (and theirMen's squads have a dose too). Allseason long they have battled in the in·dividual and relay events, and that action

continued here, with Records andseasonal bests galore. At the end of along Divisional Meet, with the team titlebetween the two still on the line in the 4Adivision, the two groups went to the linein the 4 x 400m relay. Muir has won eachof the times the two teams have battledover this distance this year, and todaywas to be no exception. Lana Cantrell(55.6) put Muir Into the lead, and fine mid·die legs by Nlkky Caddell (55.9)and CarrieFranklin (55.0) kept them there. Anchorrunner Linetta Wilson is as determined ayoung lady as any who has ever strappedon a pair of spikes and she rocketed theanchor leg in 52.2 to bring her team in at3:37.69 to edge in ahead of Kennedy(Granada Hills) and their 3:37.71 from1981 with the Howards. Hawthorne raceda fine 3:41.21 (the 2nd best in the nationthis year). The next weekend over the400m distance, where Hawthorne haswon.all the close duels, the Cougars plan·ned to make amends in the recordcategory. A super run by Dede Wheeler(12.1), Kim Grant (11.1), Deanna Amy(11.1), and Tami Stiles (10.7) broughtHawthorne in ahead of Muir at 45.11,lowering Berkeley's 45.13 NationalRecord from 1981. Muir was close, withtheir 45.23 the #3 All-Time U.S. Prep per·formance ever.

George Porter (Cabrillo, Lompoc) raceda super 35.57 in the Divisional Meet,technically establishing an auto-timednational record. Esperanza's Keith Pon·tiflet took another division in an OrangeCounty 36.74 record. Porter's 35.57 wouldhave undoubtedly taken down the 35.3from Arthur Blake (Florida) had he not tip­ped the last hurdle. In the Master's MeetPorter again came out charging, andscreaming through 200m over the sticksat 22.8 he sailed on in at 35.32, loweringanything ever run by a prep. MichaelGraham (Hawthorne) recorded a find36.67 in second.

Brian Blutreich used a fine lead·in byannouncer Dave Hurlbert on his fourththrow in the Masters Meet in the Shot andplunked the iron ball out to 69·6V., shat·tering any Golden State best mark in theevent.

The Hawthorne-Muir rivalry spills overinto Individual ,events also, with theWomen's sprints and hurdles basicallydual meets between the two schools. Car·rie Franklin (Muir) showed super accelera·tion in the Divisional 4A 100m during themiddle of the race to edge Tami Stiles(Hawthorne) 11.48-11.53 (wind aiding 3.4mps), with Dede Wheeler (11.58) and KimGrant (11.62) trailing closeiy. In theMasters 100m the script was the same, asFranklin picked up a legal nation·leading11.61 in winning over Stiles (11.70).Franklin took the 4A Hurdles in 13.65(wind 1.65) over teammaters Lana Can·trell (13.91)and Nikky Caddell (14.05) withLaShawn McBride (LB Poly) sandwichedin at third in 13.99. In the Masters it blew abit more (2.8) and Franklin blasted a 13.49over Cantrell's 13.81. Linetta Wilson swit·ched to the 300m LH in one of the finaldual meets, and here, in her 5th race evercruised a 41.87 nation-leading mark.Again, teammates were close as Cantrellran 42.58 and Caddell 43.64 as Muir mov·ed to a 4A team title. Tami Stiles andHawthorne owned the 200m, as theMillikan transfer raced a 23.37w (2.5) Divi·sional win and 23.58 (1.6) Masters winover teammates Kim Grant (24.08) andDede Wheeler (24.43). Wilson took the 4A400m at 54.35, and the Masters race was

Linetta got out fast, 25.1 at200m, 38.5 at 300m, then quick·finishingJaneen Vickers (Pomona) and PrincessBennett (Compton) began to close.Wilson struggled the final 100m in 15.2 towin at 54.81 over the 53.83 of Vickers and53.86 of Bennett. A real fine in the sprintswas Madette Smith (Quartz Hills), whoraced 23.98w in the 3A 200m, 55.73 in the400m, and proved to be quite a LongJumper ..

In the absence of Henry Thomas theMen's sprints were thrown kind of wideopen. Hawthorne's Michael Marsh hadexploded to a 21.2 in his League Meet

(behind Thomas's 20.4) and continued toimprove at 200m. In the DivisionalMichael edged a top group in the 4A raceat 20.82 (1.5 wind). Chip Rish (Marina) was2nd at 21.01, Compton's Anthony Ford3rd at 21.18, and Oxnard's LawrenceBurkley 4th at 21.32. Terry Johnson(Katella, Anaheim) took the 3A race at21.26w (2.6). In the Masters Marsh show·ed good acceleration around the turn andused the maximum allowable wind (2.0mps) to edge in ahead at 20.96 of the21.09 of Burkley and 21.26 of Ford.Burkley won the big 1OO's,taking the 4Aat 10.45w (2.4) with a strong finish, andnarrowly catching Ford at the finish in theMasters at 10.62-10.63. Rish looked goodin dominating the locals at 4oom, cruisinga well· paced (11.6-11.6-11.7·12.1 100msplits) 47.05 4A win over Sean Kelly(Hawthorne) 47.85, then racing 47.12(11.2-11.3-11.9-12.7)in the Masters.

After all 1he craziness that went withthe 109 Meter High Hurdles in the Divl·sional (where it looked like only oneathlete was affected by coming up to thefirst hurdle too quickly), Damon Thomas(Pasadena) raced a super 13.95 (wind 1.1)to edge Katella's Terry Johnson (14.00) Inthe Masters.

The lack of Thomas certainly openedup the Men's Relays. Muir had the fastestDivisional 400m race at 41.53 withHawthorne holding on to a spot in themasters with a 42.29. In that race Comp­ton's Anthony Ford blew by Muir'sRichard Bell on the anchor to win at41.39·41.51, with Mike Marsh bringingHawthorne In 3rd at 41.69. Hawthorne hasquarter·milers to burn, and MikeGraham's 47.6 third leg opened up the1600m relay in the Masters for SeanKelly's 47.3 and a 3:12.73 win. Centennialraced a line 3:13.81 for 2nd and LongBeach Poly 3:14.35 for third. Kelly cruisedthrough 600m wins, cranking a 1:50.94 4ADivisional win, then running slow enoughthrough the quarter (54.0) for companyand dragging a group to good times In theMasters behind his 1:51.08 yawner.Ganesha's Vince Thompson was closestat 1:52.84.

Mild surprises marked the Long Jumps.Victor Valley's Robert Clamalet openedat 24-1'1,w in the Masters Meet to winthat competition over Pasadena's CleoBates (23-6'4 wI. Madelle Smith (QuartzHill) put all her jumps in the Masters com·petition out over 18-5 with a.19·8'1.w bestto take Rosalyn Mitchell (Diamond Bar)19·7w. Yleana Carrasco (Anaheim) sailedover 5·10 to have the top mark in both theDivisional and Masters High Jumps. EricWheelwright (Edison, Huntington Beach)had the top Divisional leap for the guys at6-10, with Hawthorne's John Medford (yesthey have people besides sprinters) tak­ing the Masters at 6·10. Marcus Hooks(Lakewood) opened early with a49-11'4 inthe Masters Triple Jump to take TimWilliams (Rubidoux, Riverside) 49·5'1,.Muir's Terrance Williams had the top Dlvi·sional mark at 49·10'4, with Tim 2nd thereat 49-7'/•. James Browne (California,Whittier) improved out to 49-4'/.w in tak­ing the 3A level jump over Greg Harper(Santa Fe, SF Springs) 49·1 'I•.ConsistentJamie Kirven (Woodbridge, Irvine) leaped38-5'1.w on her first Triple Jump in theMasters to take Kim Taylor (Valencia38-3';' w) and Debbie Orr (Ocean View,Huntington Beach) 38·1%. All-WorldVolleyballer Elaina Oden (Irvine) con·tinued her Shot Put mastery over localswith a 44·7'4 Divisional and 43·3'/. linaltoss Masters victory. Brandl Gail(Rowland) improved to 43-3 in the Mastersfor 2nd, while Heidi Adams was 2nd in the4A competition at 43-6'4. Siml's EdGagnon won the Masters Vault at 15-1over the 14·8 of Manuel Ballard.

The Women's 600 in the Masters Meetwas kind of wierd, as a fall near the finishresulted in a re·run alter the meet wasover. Two girls who ended up on theground the first time qualified into the

State Meet on the second running. SherrlSmith (Woodbridge) won at 2:13.94, butSharon Manship (Thousand Oaks) watch­ed her footing better this time and was2nd at 2:14.86, as did Nancle Long (Mis­sion Viejo) (2:15.06 for 4th after beinganother failing victim the first time).Nicole Rltchot (Edison, HuntingtonBeach) took the Masters 1600 .01 slowerthan her 4A win at 4:56.58 and was the on­

ly area girl under 5:00 this year.Maramonte League rivals Melissa Sutton(Newbury Park) and Christy Farrell (Thou­sand Oaks) battled In the Masters 3200,with Sutton prevailing 10:44.74-10:45.49.Tracey Williams (Mountain View, EIMonte) had the fastest Divisional time at10:48.08, but was sick the next week andcould not hang on to the top group duringthe final 1600m.
