Dear Hevre,
L’shana tova! I hope the year 5775 has begun well for you.
This fall we will undertake a Vision process as a community. I’m eager to collabo-
rate with the members of the congregation and the Board to create a compelling
vision that will make Oseh Shalom stronger and more vibrant than ever before. I’m
confident that the Vision process will help us to find new ways to share the many
strengths and blessings of our congregation with the world around us, and that the
new encounters will add to our vitality. Following the fall Visioning, in the spring we
will undertake a Strategic Planning process, to plan the needed resources and ef-
forts to make our communal vision a reality.
Over the months ahead in The Shalom, I’ll be publishing pieces of my ‘Rabbi’s Sug-
gested Vision Statement & Commentary’.* These writings are intended to initiate
the process of envisioning an exciting and compelling future for Oseh Shalom. The
intent is not to impose the specific ideas upon the congregation. Rather, over the
months ahead we will create numerous opportunities for feedback and discussion,
to consider these ideas and others. Please stay tuned for more updates. I look for-
ward to widespread congregational involvement to create this communal vision.
Shalom,
Rabbi Doug Heifetz

P A G E 2 V O L U M E 4 8 , N O . 2 The Shalom
L’Shanah Tovah. This month marks my fourth anniver-
sary with Oseh Shalom.
Preparing for the High Holidays is truly a community ef-
fort. Building and Grounds chair, Don Street, repainted
the Sukkah, the Richardson Family organized the effort
to stain and seal the new Gaga Pit, which has become
an attraction for those kids both attending Religious
School, and apparently a few kids after High Holiday ser-
vices. Steve Klein and Phil Victor have been working all
summer doing electrical repairs, and Gary Magnus came
in and did some repairs to help us kick off the season,
too.
The restrooms have had a slight upgrade. I’ve brought in
a paper company, which provided us all new hand towel
and toilet paper dispensers throughout the building, us-
ing their paper supplies we will save us upward of
$1,200 (after six weeks working with them it may be
closer to $2,000). As they say, money doesn’t grow on
trees, and if I can both save money and bring efficiency,
you know I will.
I also want to thank our maintenance staff. Lanell
Barnes of L&F Cleaning Services, donated his services in
waxing the education wing and classroom floors this
years. He explained he wanted to do this to show his ap-
preciation to Oseh Shalom. He and his staff have been
doing a terrific job since joining us last December. This is
their first year working with us over the High Holidays
and they have been magnificent.
The volunteers who have made the High Holidays go so
smoothly, whether coordinating the ushers, stuffing the
High Holiday packets, processing the tickets, or organiz-
ing Tashlih and much more, are the unsung heroes of
the congregations. Kudos to Karen Meckler, High Holi-
day Chair, and all those who have worked so hard to
make everything flow so seamlessly.
Finally, I would like to thank all those who have
helped in the office for the past month, particularly
as we prepared the High Holidays. Thank you: Judy
Arnoff, Mona Davis, Allison Holtz, Doris Kirschbaum,
Mariyan Kolev, Karen Meckler, and Pauline Pivowar.
Again, best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New
Year and for an easy fast on Yom Kippur. I look for-
ward to seeing you at services!

mentators’ Bible, by Michael Carasik (professor of
Biblical Hebrew at RRC).

Shalom!
My heart was racing. My palms were sweaty. I’d drunk a little too much coffee, so my adrenaline was pumping. Best of all, I had a huge smile on my face. What am I talking about? The first day of religious school! Since I am a former teacher, the first day was and is always my favorite. I get to see familiar faces, see how tall someone’s grown over the summer, and meet younger siblings. My big smile comes from knowing I will be back with the kids. My racing heart and sweaty palms, well, that’s in anticipation of meeting the parents. The kids know me and my silly ways. It’s the parents that I need to impress! I’m happy to say that our first day was a success, and that is a huge relief.
Several parents stayed for the assembly. They got an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and also to learn about the synagogue’s annual retreat. However, I wish more parents had stayed. There are no worries, though, because we will be having another parent session in October. At that time, we will introduce the school’s brand new PTA and give more information on how you can get involved. No, I’m not asking for a commitment from you every Sunday, but I am going to need more help than we’ve had in the past. There is a lot to do to make this school great and to ensure that your children have a fun learning experience.
In the meantime, please make sure you read the weekly newsletter (it is emailed each week). If you are not getting the newsletter, make sure you contact us at Oseh. On top of summaries of events from the classroom teachers, you will also find information about upcoming school-wide events, fundraisers, the retreat, and school calendar. Finally, if you have not already done so, I would like to meet with each family one-on-one. I want a chance to say hello, but I also want to make sure we are meeting your child’s needs.

Draft
Oseh Shalom Visioning Material
I. Mission Statement:
Oseh Shalom is a vibrant, inclusive Reconstructionist synagogue, with members throughout the Baltimore-
Washington area, dedicated to providing a supportive community for celebrating Jewish life through prayer,
learning, and social action.
-- adopted by Oseh Shalom in Fall 2007
II. Values
Oseh Shalom, and the Jewish community in general, should focus on offering the world our very timely and
crucial values to the world. Our values can serve as a refuge and antidote within a world that is full of so much
pressure, anxiety, and isolating individualism. Our key values include:
1. Kehilla - Community support & togetherness
2. Tefillah - Reflective practice and prayer
3. Ruach - spirituality and personal growth
4. Shorashim - Strong & dynamic ancient roots during a time of upheaval and change
5. Torah Lishma - study for the sake of learning
6. Avodah - a base for serving others
7. Klal Yisrael - Embrace of diverse family structures
8. Eilu v’Eilu - Theological pluralism poised to heal divisions
Now more than ever, these strengths speak to the needs of countless individuals and households. Now more
than ever, we need to offer the blessings of our synagogue community to the world around us.
III. Vision
Just as Abraham and Sarah opened their tent on all sides for a variety of visitors, and actively sought a wide
variety of participants for their community, so too we might pursue an Open Tent Judaism approach, defined by:
1. A wide range of experiences in prayer and spiritual practice, for widespread engagement
Possible Examples:
B’Yachad (formerly ‘Shift to Shabbat’) programs for Shabbat and holidays, including the
Religious School students and parents in services & communal meals
Regular meditation services
Musical ruach services
Regular experimentation with prayer and ritual, for discussion later
2. Family education, to involve and connect participants from different life stages
Possible Examples:
B’Yachad (formerly ‘Shift to Shabbat’) programs for Shabbat and holidays, twice per month,
including the Religious School students and parents in services, communal meals and activities
by age group
Family camp as an integral part of our program
Oseh Shalom Annual Retreat, combined with Family Camp
Remove Wednesdays, to free time and budget for B’Yachad & Family Camp
3. Positive experiences of Jewish living, instead of rote study
Possible Examples:
B’Yachad (formerly ‘Shift to Shabbat’) programs for Shabbat and holidays, including the
Religious School students and parents in services & communal meals
Creative project-based learning, involving music, movement, video, drama, etc.
Shift from grade-level Hebrew instruction to skill-level based instruction and tutoring (online &
in-person)
4. Social action to heal a broken world and to engage with the public
Possible Examples:
Monthly public dental clinic at Oseh Shalom
Peace volunteer trip to Israel & Palestine
Delegations to support communities affected by disasters
5. Lower barriers to entry, emphasizing nedivat lev (free will offerings) over obligation
Possible Examples:
Voluntary donations instead of dues
Religious school hours to emphasize less driving for parents & kids
6. Innovative programming in our building for our members, neighbors, and friends
Possible Example: Olive Branch Way production company for theater, music, & entertainment
7. Public Space Judaism, beyond the walls of our building
Possible Examples:
Passover in the Supermarket aisles program
Rosh Hashana in the Park celebration
Lectures in book stores, cafes, etc.
Monthly story hour in local libraries for parents & young children
8. Online engagement
Possible Examples:
Increased social media activity, video content, etc.
Judaic games for public use, like Shofar Run by Oseh Shalom
Game development center to help unaffiliated families (and members) create personalized
Jewish games for their occasions (bar/bat mitzvah, wedding, etc.)

From Here to Eternity: Jewish Views of Afterlife with Rabbi Gary Fink
The Lifelong Learning Committee is pleased to have Oseh Shalom Rabbi Emeritus Gary Fink join us for two Sunday
morning classes entitled “From Here to Eternity: Jewish Views of Afterlife,” on October 19 and 26 at 10:00 am. Par-
ticipants will discuss the following topics: What do Jews believe about heaven? about an afterlife? about angels? Do
atheists get to heaven? What ideas about afterlife have emerged through 3,000 years of Jewish thought, belief, and
history?
Rabbi Fink served as rabbi at Oseh Shalom for 25 years before retiring to work full-time in the field of end-of-life
care and counseling. He is Vice President of Spiritual Care and Volunteer Services and a pastoral counselor at
Montgomery Hospice, where he specializes in grief, loss, and life-limiting illness.
GRAND PRIZE—DINNER FOR TWO, ONCE A MONTH, FOR A YEAR
One more fundraiser has started this fall and we need everyone to participate. We would like you to consider both to sell and to buy raffle tickets. This newest raffle will last until December 19, when we pick the winners during the B’yachad Hanukkah Dinner.
The raffle is a “Dinner Raffle” in which the grand prize is ‘DINNER FOR TWO’ once a month for a year ($600 value in Restaurant.com certificates). There will be 6 additional winners that will receive a $50 Restau-rant.com certificate. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each or 6 for $5; which should make them easy to sell for both adults and children. Because the prize is not specific to Oseh Shalom, they can be sold to your friends, coworkers, neighbors, parents at kids’ sports….(my kids will be selling while we are at the bowling alley).
So why should we all take the time to sell these tickets? For several great reasons. First, this can help some families offset their children’s rate of attending the Annual Retreat. Students from the ages of 3 to 11 who sell 100 tickets or more can attend the retreat for free (with adult). Students who are 12-18 who sell 100 tickets get a 50% reduction, or they can go for free (again with an adult) if they sell over 200 tickets. Revenue from families who don’t have children attending the retreat will go in to the Tzedek fund. So now you might be ask-ing, “What is the Tzedek Fund?”. The Tzedek Fund is used to help the congregation underwrite the variances provided to our members who cannot afford full dues. As a Reconstructionist synagogue we seek to be inclu-sive and not bar anyone from being a member of our community. Therefore, the Tzedek fund helps us to off-set this cost, while making it possible for us to maintain our values and sustain congregational programs and services.
So how do you get your tickets to sell? All religious school students will be given a set of tickets in school. Everyone else can contact me to work out a way that would be best for you. We can meet at the shul, I can leave them there for you to get, or I can mail them. Please contact me with questions and also to let me know how many tickets you want and how you would like to get them.
Thanks, Kelly Benton-Klein Development Chair ksk4you@aol.com

youth
& teens grades 7-12
For many teens the only time they see their religious school friend is when they are at Oseh Shalom. So what are our children to do once religious school ends? TEEN CONNECT- a teen social group from communities in several different counties. One Saturday evening a month members will get together simply to have fun! They will go out to eat, bowling, go to the movies, play paintball…you get the idea. It’s all about being together and keeping friendships going. Teens will have a chance to get together for a second time each month at Oseh to do activities designed to help them experience Jewish life beyond Hebrew school. What does it mean to be a Jewish adult? What are they supposed to do and can they do at Oseh?
We are pleased to announce Mikey Hess-Webber will be spearheading this group. Mikey has worked for several years as a youth advisor for BBYO Oseh in Howard County. With her experience, and the backing of the Howard County Jewish Federation and the Rockville Jewish Federation, we are sure to have a top-notch teen group!

Let Your Current Household Spending Earn Money For Oseh Shalom
JOIN OUR NEWEST (AND ONE OF THE EASIEST) FUNDRAISER-SCRIPS
What is Scrips?
Scrips is a program for non-profit organizations that allows us to purchase gift cer-tificates from local and national retailers. These retailers (over 700 to choose from) sell the certificates at a discounted rate. We then purchase and use them for full face value and Oseh Shalom earns the difference in revenue. On aver-age, we will make 5% revenue per retailer.
How often will orders be placed and delivered?
Initially we are going to be doing orders every 3 weeks. As more people register and holiday season approaches, we might order every 2 weeks. In order to have your order processed, you will have to provide both your order and pay-ment in by the due date. The easiest way would be to order and pay through the Scrip website directly, but you can also mail in or drop off your order and payment (check or cash) to me. I have a mailbox in the office, and I am in syna-gogue during Sunday School hours. Orders will then be distributed the following week. They can be picked up on the following Sunday during school hours, I can mail them to you, or we can work out a different pick up option.
What are dates of the first few orders and when will they be ready?
Orders need to be in by September 21, October 12, November 2 and November 23.
They can be picked up the following Sunday or they will be mailed by the end of the week after order is placed.
There are some rechargeable cards and electronic cards that will be available by Monday or Tuesday after order is placed.
How do I sign up to start helping Oseh Shalom?
Go to www.shopwithscrip.com and sign up with our enrollment code- 9B386B1A3985L. You can order here or just read more about the program and find the retailers. If you don’t want to do online version, contact me directly and I will work with you to see about paper ordering or a system that works best for you (a standing monthly order for Giant or Safeway or Exxon….).
(continued on next page)
P A G E 8
SCRIPS (continued)
Spread the word. You can make sure your fellow congregants have tried the program once you see how easy it is and how successful it can be for Oseh. You can also share with friends and families who are not part of Oseh but would like to buy gift certificates.
How can I help with this fundraiser or other ones during the year?
Contact Kelly Benton-Klein at 301-490-7764 or ksk4you@aol.com.
For this fundraiser I would welcome help with organizing and distributing cards—probably an hour or two per month.
How much can we earn for Oseh Shalom with Scrips and our normal spending habits?
According to an example on their website, if a family typically spends $75 on food & $25 on gas a week and $50 on both clothes & dining out a month, that alone would be $6000 a year. With an average revenue of 5% using Scrips, Oseh could earn about $300 (per family). My favorite retailer and example on the list is RESTAU-RANT.COM because if I want to buy holiday gifts for loved ones or the UPS driver (at my house often), I can get a $50 value card for only $20 and Oseh earns 50% (or $10 per card). So if I buy 5, I would get $250 worth of gifts for only $100 and Oseh would receive $50. If we had 100 families do JUST these two examples (not even half of the congregation) Oseh Shalom could earn $35,000 (I dream big!!). So, can you imagine if all our families participated and we used the cards for our groceries, gas, dining out, clothes, home improvement, travel, and more (with about 700 retailers to choose from)?
Thanks so much for looking into the program and I can’t wait to get everyone signed up. Please contact me with any and all questions.

Fight off the Flu by getting a flu shot from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
at the synagogue on Sunday, October 26, 2014.
Cindy Feinberg RPh., a synagogue member will be giving the shots through Rite Aid Pharmacy. She can vaccinate children 9 and over and adults. Those over 65 will be given the high dose vaccine. This is usu-ally covered in full by Medicare Part B and most insurances.
Please call her at work and provide her, or her associates: Lori or Myra, with your name, address , phone number, birth date and insurance information, so they can bill your insurance prior to the clinic and know how many vaccines, and supplies to bring and be sure there is no copay.
Cindy will try to bring a few extra flu shots if she can. Call her at work at 301-260-0469 or at home 301-570-8064. If no insurance cash price is $29.99 and still call to be sure they get your information. She is a licensed immunization pharmacist. If you want a pneumonia vaccine she can do that also.
Please call her if any questions. This is a good way to start off a HEALTHY NEW YEAR.
