Social Security Act• August 1935– Workers earned the right to receive benefits because

they paid premiums– After age 65– Disabilities– Poor families with young dependent children– Unemployment payments– Left out farmers and domestic worker“no politician can ever scrap my social security program.”

1936 Election

• African-Americans & women voted democrat– The Black Cabinet– FDR promoted several women• First woman to a cabinet post

• Ran against Alfred Landon“…violates the basic ideals of the American system.”– Huey Long assassinated– One of the largest landslides in history

Results & Legacy• 1937-Reputation took a hit– Court-Packing plan

• Increase in justices, and new retirement policies– Unemployment rose

• WPA & PWA cut• 1938- Congress wins more republican seats• 1939- New Deal era comes to an end– Limited success- high unemployment/not a full

recovery– Americans felt a stronger sense of security and
