Task 7: The Print Industry
Hand
Etching Method Etching is a form of intaglio printing, where an image is
created by cutting or engraving into a surface ink is pushed into the cut lines
Traditionally a copper sheet is used, now days we use etching card which is able to be cut into with just a sharp pencil.
Then it gets pressed against paper which creates a print.
Advantages Disadvantages
Looks amazingCan be mass produced
Takes a long time to doCan smudge
LinocutMethodLinocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller and then impressed onto paper or fabric.
Looks good Can be massed produced
Takes along time Can be smudged easily
Screen printMethodScreen printing is a printing technique that uses a woven cloth to support an ink-blocking stencil to get the image you wanted
Advantages DisadvantagesCan be mass producedLooks good Can be done in colour
Can smudge Takes a long time to do
WoodcutMethod A image is carved into a block of wood, with the parts
to be printed remaining level with the surface. While the parts printing parts are removed. The areas to show white are cut away with a knife or chisel, leaving the image to show in black at the original level.
Advantages DisadvantagesTakes a long time Lots of effort is neededCan smudge
Looks really goodCan be mass produced
LithographyMethod Originally used an image drawn with oil, fat, or wax
onto a smooth surface called a limestone plate. The stone was treated with a mixture of acid and gum Arabic. etching the portions of the stone which were not protected by the grease-based image. The etched areas retained the water. A oil based ink was then put on and would be repelled by the water, sticking to the first drawing only.
Advantages Disadvantages
GravureMethod In gravure printing, the image is made up of
small holes in the surface of the printing plate. The holes are filled with ink and any extras removed. Paper comes into contact with the ink when it is pressed against the plate.
Advantages Disadvantages
Can be mass producedLooks good
Can smudgeTakes a long time
Screen PressMethodScreen printing is a printing technique that uses a woven cloth to support an ink-blocking stencil to get the image wanted. The attached stencil forms open areas of cloth that transfer ink or other materials which can be pressed through the cloth as a sharp-edged image.
Advantages Disadvantages
The ink might smudgeCant correct or change it once its been done
Easy to doCan be mass produced
Digital
PhotocopyingMethod Most current photocopiers use a technology called xerography, a dry process that uses electrostatic charges on a light sensitive photoreceptor. To first attract and then transfer toner particles (a powder) onto paper as a image. Heat, pressure or a combination of both is then used to fuse the toner onto the paper. (Copiers can also use a ink jet, but xerography is normal for office copying.)
Advantages Disadvantages
QuickEasy to doCan be mass produced
Complicated to fix if it breaksYou have to have electricity
Laser PrintingMethod a laser beam goes over a charged drum to get a differentially charged image. The drum then selectively collects charged toner and transfers the image to paper, which is then heated to permanently keep the image.
Advantages Disadvantages
Cant smudgeQuick and easy Image is there permanently
If there's a mistake you have to start againHard to fix if it breaksHas to have electricity
Ink JetMethodInkjet printing is a type of computer printing that creates a digital image by putting droplets of ink onto paper, plastic, or other material.
Advantages Disadvantages
Can smudgeNot as good a qualityNeeds electricity
Easy to useCan be mass produced
Desktop PublishingMethodDesktop publishing is the making of documents using a page layout skill on a personal computer. Desktop publishing software can generate layouts and produce typographic quality text and images.
Advantages Disadvantages
Needs electricityCant take it anywhereCan be deleted easily by accident
Can be mass produced Only people who you want can see it
