One of the greatest mitzvot is to enable others to perform
mitzvot, those sacred acts which propel us to godly living and
the world towards godly ends. Those who make God’s home a
“house for all people” birth blessings beyond count and are
themselves seven-fold blessed.

From the Rabbi….
This will be my final Oracle article as the Rabbi of Temple B’nai Or. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who welcomed me from the time of my arrival and helped me to feel at home over the past three years.
Thank you to everyone who worked with me on projects big and small from Slichot to LifeLong Learning.
Thank you to the Friday night “regulars” who come to services week in and week out and remind me of the power of community and the power of Shabbat.
Thank you to the men of the Men’s Schmooze who allowed me to join the lively conversation.
To the participants of Bagels and Torah, thank you for your dedication to our sacred text. There is no better way to enjoy Shabbat then with the study of Torah.
Thank you to all who participated in the Keepers of Jewish Excellence Speaker Series. Your willingness to take a leap of faith helped me, together with Joan Sturm and Carol Marin, to bring wonderful speakers to our congregation this year.
Thank you to the religious school students, Hebrew high students and preschool students for bringing joyful energy into the building. And to the preschool, religious school and Hebrew high parents, thank you for allowing me to be part of your children’s Jewish education.
Thank you to the senior staff, administrative staff and maintenance staff. Your contributions to this congregation make it strong and vibrant.
Finally, thank you to the members of Temple B’nai Or. It has been a privilege to be with you at happy, celebratory times and at challenging and sad times. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your family for the past three years.

From the Cantor… Spring is a time for renewal. A chance to view the world in a new light, to rekindle light in our own hearts; the hearts of the people around us, even the entire world. In our morning prayers, Ahavah Rabah, suggests that God loves us with surpassing compassion - .אהבה רבה אהבתנו, חמלה גדולה ויתרה חמלת עלינו. If only we could internalize the meanings of these words and view ourselves in a kinder light. It begins within.
Pesach marks and celebrates rejuvenation with a series of rituals. We tell our people’s formative and transformative story of freedom from slavery, then embark on a 49 day spiritual journey - the Omer. At its conclusion, we arrive at revelation - the holiday of Shavuot. According to our tradition, we stood at Mount Sinai and received Torah - the law that will lead and unite us for millennia.
The journey in the desert is at the core of our identity. We have ventured through hardship, through a profound spiritual journey and continue to reach higher goals, to fix our broken world.
In the spirit of this journey we are on together as a community, I highlight this season’s rituals closest to my heart. As an Israeli, it is my greatest passion and responsibility to bring you Israel. This year, Israel celebrates 70. Events for Israel will abound all around us. At TBO, on Sunday, April 29th, the NJ Cantors Concert ensemble will sing a beautiful concert of Israeli music.
Furthermore, Saturday, May 19th, revelation will take place at TBO, as we host the first community-wide Tikkun Leil Shavuot. Traditionally, an all-night Torah study session, ours will be launched by a girl Band - “BANOT,” and will be followed by inspiring contemporary study sessions. Come for some or all; there will be something for everyone.
Lastly, but perhaps, most importantly, Saturday night April 21st, will be our synagogue gala. Hopefully, you are already planning to be part of this important event, the beating heart of our community. We will need everyone’s support. Please make sure TBO is part of your heart. We are a wonderful community and in order to guarantee our future together, we hope everyone can support it in a meaningful way.
Cantor Galit Dadoun Cohen
From the President…
I was recently reading an article about the benefits of gratitude. Did you know that:
Gratitude makes us nicer, more trusting, more social, and more appreciative.
Gratitude makes you a more effective manager, helps you network, increases your decision-making capabilities, increases your productivity, and helps you get mentors and protégés. As a result, gratitude helps you achieve your career goals, as well as making your workplace a more friendly and enjoyable place to be.
Gratitude increases sleep quality, reduces the time required to fall asleep, and increases sleep duration. Said differently, gratitude can help with insomnia.
And the list goes on and on...I share this with you because I have so much to be grateful for and I think about it every day. I am grateful for my family and friends, including my TBO family. I am grateful for all of our volunteers and generous donors. I appreciate the daily work as well as the extra effort and dedication from our TBO clergy and staff as we search for a new Executive Director. I say thank you to the members of our Board of Trustees who have worked on challenging issues, envisioning the future direction of TBO, and who collaborate passionately and respectfully. A special thank you goes to both the Rabbi Search Committee and the ED Search Committee who have been working diligently to choose leaders who will help move our community forward.
As we move into the Spring and we celebrate together our gratitude for Jackie and Larry Horn, Poppy and Richard Segal, and Marcie and Glenn Yarnis and their dedication to Tikkun Olam, I hope everyone takes a minute and thinks about how that will help them as well as Temple and take the opportunity to actively participate.
Wishing you and your families a Happy Passover and Happy Spring!
Michele Murray, President

From the Religious School…
We’ve all heard the term Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, as part of Reform Judaism conversation and culture for so many years. It connotes social action in pursuit of social justice. Originating with Isaac Luria, a Jewish Kabbalistic rabbi, whose mystical accounts of creation claim God contracted himself in special vessels of light which shattered and scattered everywhere. The divine light returned to its divine source except for some broken shards that constituted evil in the material world. Adam was to restore these sparks by means of mystical exercises but couldn’t complete the task because of his sins. It is now up to us humans to gather the “light” through actions of social healing which are now our responsibility. Only we can “fix” the wrong in the world through personal actions, policy and societal changes. We are the movers and shakers who can make the world whole again. In other words, by doing mitzvot we bring healing to the world.
When we sit down for our Passover seders and re-tell the story of our liberation from slavery, let’s spend a few minutes through conversation, to discuss how we can work towards gathering those shreds of light to make our world whole again for all of us. Take the opportunity with your family to teach how to make Tikkun Olam more than a phrase and let it become a commitment. We are descendants of thousands before us who told their children the story of liberation from slavery which has become the center of our religion, most of our holidays, and in great part our Torah. We need to explain to our children that nothing is fixed unless we work hard to achieve that goal. Take nothing for granted. As Jewish people, we have inherited that role, and through the centuries, it has become a cornerstone of how we live our lives.
Action, not words, define who one is. We are a blessed people living in an amazing free country and at an incredible time in history. We can, no, we are commanded to, do our part to perform mitzvot that will repair our world. Are we up to the task?
Have a sweet and joyous Pesach.
David Iskovitz, Director of Education
From the Pre-School…
Shammai said, in Pirkei Avot 1:15 “…say little, but do much, and greet every person cheerfully. ” Can you think of a more fitting directive for an early childhood educator?
When we think about Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, we can focus on those who spend their lives making the world a better place by instilling respect, positive self-esteem, and a genuine love of learning to the next generation. Elisa Stevens has done this for almost 14 years in our school (and many years before that).
Elisa was the first new teacher that I hired when I became the director, and has been my partner through many adventures during her tenure here. We started Camp Brody of B’nai Or, The Fab & Five program, and Camp Teen Leadership together. We worked together to streamline many of the processes and procedures that existed in the running of the school because of her insight and knowledge. Her straightforward approach and her big heart are the things that have endeared her to the students, families, and her colleagues.
Elisa is retiring after this school year, and her mark on the world is ever present. The students fortunate to have had her received gifts beyond measure. Her excellent teaching, combined with her can-do attitude has strengthened our community, and contributed to the school’s incredible reputation. Although she will be greatly missed, so much of what she infused into our program will keep her present within our school, always.
We wish her tons of luck as she and her husband Jon relocate to Florida, and hope they enjoy their retirement to the fullest extent!!!

From the Youth Group...
BOOTY would like to thank everyone who came out and supported them for the Purim Carnival! It was a huge success! Special thanks to Laura Axler and Suzy Freeman for helping with the food. Thank you to all of the teens who worked the stations! The night before the Purim Carnival, BOOTY had a super fun shul-in, lead by Julie Lilienfeld and Rachael Goldstein. They decorated pillowcases and cookies and participated in a Social Action project, which consisted of creating snack bags for the hungry, led by Sam Lynn.
On April 18, there will be a general meeting/ lunch held in the youth lounge. On April 14, we will be having our Parents Night Out – so parents – register your children! Go to the Temple website to register.
I also want to share some words by Sam Lynn, BOOTY’s Social Action VP. He attended a gun violence prevention rally a few weeks ago. “On Sunday February, 25th I attended a gun violence prevention rally at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, NJ. I had the chance to hear the powerful words of the students of Parkland and Senator Bob Menendez. One of the students said “Our goal is to have Parkland be remembered as the school that got shot up, we want it to be remembered as the last school that got shot up.” Those
powerful words stuck with me and I hope they will stick with you. In the Torah we read justice shall you pursue. As the social action vice president of the youth group I keep these words in mind as I write programs and do mitzvot. The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas are truly acting by these words as they fight for the pursuit of justice for the 17 friends and peers, that lost their lives on that tragic day.”
