Temple B’rith ShalomYour spiritual home in the high desert.
Purim Purim Purim! Here we are getting ready for the festivities of Purim. When we take a close look this holiday is quite challenging, in fact it is so challenging that I believe most of the Jewish world just wants to make it a child’s Halloween, but it is not Halloween, not by a long shot. The traditional story of Purim is rife with controversy, the ways that Vashti and Esther are treated, the way Mordechai delivered Esther to the Kings harem telling her that it was her obligation. There’s controversy around the stories hunger for revenge and the intense anger with which we are to BOO Haman’s name. Purim can be seen as a “Do unto others have others have done unto you.” But this is not a Godly message, even if it promises to feel good for a moment. It is not God’s way.
Purim isn’t about revenge, it isn’t about unleashing anger towards one’s enemies, it isn’t about objectifying women or turning this tale into a meaningless costume party, no no no. Purim is about courage, it is about being measured in one’s anger and toning down hateful rhetoric. Purim is about, not doing unto others who have hurt you in the same fashion as they have done unto you. And mostly, Purim is the Jewish Mardi Gras. It is the time when Spring entices the soul to hope for her warm return.
It is a celebration that the light, the warmth, will return and life will open once again to the sun. It is a time to release the fears of darkness and celebrate the LIGHT of GOD.
We are commanded to blot out the name of Amalek and Amalek is the symbol of every evil leader who has lived. The question is, how will we blot out his name?
Here is a rabbinic story that gives us a new way to blot out the name of Amalek.
During the Purim feast, The Rabbi suddenly stopped the festivities and
said, “Saddle the horses and get the carriages, it is time to blot out Amalek.”
Her students were petrified. “What could the master mean?” Being obedient disciples, they got in their carriages and followed their Rabbi. They rode into town to a local inn where the Polish peasants were engaged in their own drunken bash. The Rabbi and her disciples entered the inn. When the peasants saw them, they stopped dancing. The music stopped. Everyone circled around the Rabbi and the Jews as they walked to the center of the dance floor. The room was silent. The Rabbi looked at one of the peasants and put out her hand with her palm to the ceiling. Silence. The peasants looked at one another. Suddenly one of them stepped forward and took the Rabbi’s hand. They slowly started dancing. The musicians began playing. In a matter of minutes, all the Jews and peasants were joyously dancing with one another. That’s how we blot out Amalek today!
I sure hope that you have gotten your costume ready. We are going to have some fun.
With love and blessings,Rabbi Julie Kozlow

PRESIDENT’S LETTERShalom All,
Purim and Passover are upon us and it is time to celebrate our survival and freedom from slavery. Please forgive the errors I made because I am not an expert.
Purim is a time to celebrate our victory over evil Haman. Esther was cunning and beautiful, and with the encouragement of Mordecai, was resourceful enough to use these traits to convince King Ahashuerus of Haman’s evil plan to destroy the Jewish people. As a result, Haman was dispatched to his maker and we, the Jewish people, survived. To this day we read the entire book of Esther (the whole megillah) on the 14th day of Adar (March 9, 2020, this year). We party, eat and drink, and send gifts and food to friends and the poor so they can partake in celebrating. Rabbi
has some wonderful plans and a few surprises, so please join us this year at Temple.
Passover is our time for celebrating our departure from Egypt and slavery for freedom. We were slaves for four hundred years. We celebrated Shabbat Shira, arriving and crossing the Red (REED) sea, with song and dance. Then, after arriving at Mount Sinai we became the
Jewish Nation after receiving the Ten Commandments from Moses that he was given by GOD. We then wandered, as the wandering Jews, for forty years until we were allowed into the promised land.
We have had a tumultuous history to say the least but being believers and optimists, we were able to overcome our troubles and hatred and build lives for ourselves. As we prepare for Passover and our Community Passover Seder, please keep in mind that we have fellow Jew’s who may not be able to enjoy the celebration due to lack of funds. So, with our belief in charity and helping the less fortunate maybe a small donation can be given to Temple as a Seder contribution to help the less fortunate.
God Bless You!
Shalom,

Purim and Passover are upon us and it is time to celebrate our survival and freedom from slavery.
TBS is lucky that Jessica and her husband Remi decided to move to Prescott. You saw Jessica on the piano at High Holiday services and then she accepted the position as our administrator. If you've not yet met her, please stop by during office hours, Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mitzvah Circle is all about YOU!
Mitzvah circle is here to help you during times of need. Illness might sideline your meal prep abilities temporarily. Hospitalizations might find you in need of a talk or visit with Rabbi Julie. Maybe you are house-bound and would like a call or visit from Rabbi or a meal. We are here, PLEASE ask.
Mitzvah Circle also helps with Shiva preparations and set up such as food, baking, phone calls, etc. Please remember: We cannot help, if we do not know you are in need. Hospitals do not automatically notify your clergy so please ask a family member or friend (if you are unable) to notify Rabbi Julie or Jessica in the office. Of course, you can also call Mindy!
The entire congregation is a member of Mitzvah Circle. At times you might be the one in need and at times you might be called upon to return the mitzvah. Thus, a Mitzvah Circle is formed.
B’Shalom, Mindy mindyrubin@gmail.com
HOSPITAL VISITS AND HEALING LIST REMINDER Bikkur Cholim, visiting the sick, and Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, are two ways Temple B’rith Shalom supports those who are ill. Because of Federal confidentiality regulations (HIPAA), hospitals no longer advise the Temple if a congregant is hospitalized. Our Rabbi or a lay leader (if she is away), when asked to do so, will visit congregants in local hospitals. Please aid us in this sacred work by contacting the office to request a visit or to be added to the healing list. Jessica can be reached at 928-708-0018. We wish all those who are ill, a speedy refuah shleimah, complete healing.
REMEMBER HIPPA LAWS:When you fill out your paper-work at the hospital, please say that you are Jewish. Please let Mindy Rubin know if you need a visit by the Rabbi or if you are in the hospital. Rabbi Julie will always call first before visiting.

MEMBER CORNER
Let’s Get ACQUAINTEDShirley Phares and Holly Hess
We were born and raised in San Diego, California.
Holly retired from the Old Globe Theatre as costumer in 2014. Shirley also retired in the same year from her private practice as Clinical Psychologist and Holistic Health Practitioner.
In June 2014 we decided to leave San Diego and move to Prescott, Arizona where we had spent a number of vacations and fell in love with the area.
It was quite a change moving from living near the ocean all our lives to living in the middle of Prescott National Forest surrounded by wildlife! Not to mention, 4 seasons and snow.
In the fall of 2014 we began attending Temple B’rith Shalom after a visit from Holly’s cousin who asked us to find a Temple where she could attend Shabbat Services. Both of us felt so welcomed by the congregation, we continued attending Friday services. In February 2018 we began Jewish studies with Rabbi Perlmutter and had our Beit Din August 22nd of the same year.
Holly has an art studio at home where she creates fiber art apparel and needle painting with threads and sells her work on the internet.
Shirley is an avid hiker, birder and photographer. She enjoys meditation, reading and studying Torah.
The addition of the MEMBER CORNER, to the Ram’s Horn has been very well received. It has provided an opportunity for congregants to become familiar with each other.
To get the MEMBER CORNER started, those congregants who have submitted articles have done so on an invitational basis. We would love volunteers for the MEMBER CORNER in the future! An open invitation is now offered to every congregational family unit to submit an article with one family published each month. Please submit your article to Jessica Dreifuss at office@brithshalom-az.org prior to the 20th day of the month.
The following is the outline guidance to be used in preparing your submission:
1. Photo (Head Shot).2. Member name (single, couple, or family).3. Brief autobiography (background information).4. Something about family.5. What brought you to Prescott?6. Brief work background.7. What are your interests?
Please take advantage of participating and help build a closer family relationship in the congregation.
