THE LOST
GENERATION

THE CHOICE OF TOPIC Our choice of topic is on teenage image, and
perception in society We want to address the issue of why teenagers are
perceived as they are in our society today
This is a great topic for the British public because it applies to so many people!
Young people would be the primary audience with those who are concerned with the perception of young people being the secondary audience.
THE CHOICE OF TOPIC
POTENTIAL IDEAS FOR FOOTAGE
We could use parallel footage of the two sides of teenage perception in society, shown in it’s positive and negative light.
We could have the same person, being filmed in two completely different ways:
What we actually are: How we’re stereotyped:
POTENTIAL IDEAS FOR FOOTAGE
• We can look at the teenage image, today, and at the many stereotypes that surround it.
• E.G: Hoods, Dark clothes, Violence etc.
• Interviews with young people and of those that stereotype young people.
• Different stereotypes, shown to highlight the stupidity of them.
• Dark footage of group of youths – Contrasting footage of the same youths in a different light.
IDEAS FOR OPENING MONTAGE
The opening montage could be of two clips of the same young person, running parallel to each other.
One could be of the youth in a good light, one could be in a bad light. The fact that it is the same person could show how people are perceived in contrasting ways for different reasons.
We could spend the opening montage discussing everything that is good about young people, with many different shots showing everything good about the youth of today.
At the end of the mini montage, we could show a complete comparison showing how young people are stereotyped by society and the media.
This comparison would be hard hitting and effective in setting the scene for the documentary.
IDEAS FOR OPENING MONTAGE
Possible interviews with teenagers aged 15-19 mainly but we are also able to interview any other age group as is a very broad subject. Other possible interviews that we can carry out are:- Security Guards- Police - Teachers- OAP’s
INTERVIEWS
By having a variation of people that we interview this will let us get a better perspective as to why Teenagers are actually stereotyped by the media and how it causes our generation to be frowned upon.
From the interviews we will be looking to ask the question. Why do young people get stereotyped by society and the media ?
interviews with teenagers that are directly and indirectly affected would be just as good.
Films like ‘Adulthood’ and ‘Kidulthood’ fuel the idea if how typical youth act within certain communities.
Also with programmes like Skins youths are portrayed as trouble, alcoholic, drug abusive and loud!
This poll shows just how important this topic is, and justifies our reasons for choosing such a hard hitting subject.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for “The Forgotten Generation” will be teenagers in the age group of 13-19. This will be our primary target audience.
Our audience will then branch into people that are affected by our topic, this would include the parents, teachers, families or people who are generally around teens.
The media sees youths as nothing but trouble and that's how they try to portray them instead of focussing on the good.
ADVANTAGES TO THE TOPIC
• Relevant to teens• Broad topic area• Catchy title• Wide target audience• A lot of potential footage• Many potential interviews• Different groups portrayed by the media such as
Chavs, hipsters, emos etc.
ADVANTAGES
Consequences of how you dress, how you are viewed from the clothes you wear.
Don’t need as many resources to make a good documentary
May get more truthful responses from other teens if we are interviewing them ourselves
We would capture a more natural environment, when we ourselves are teens.
DISADVANTAGES
• Topic may be too broad• Easy to get carried away on images• Difficult to make it interesting?• Might be difficult to get teenagers to say what
they really feel/mean.• Might be difficult to find different youths that have
grown up in different environments• Staying on topic, may become bias when looking
for footage.
