The JerryStefano Coupe

By

Mike Dermond

Jerry Stefano was one of the charter members of the PSRG. Very early on after I joined the club in 1973 I was introduced to him through Bill Steil at a swap meet because Jerry also had a 40 Ford station wagon and we became friends. Jerry never attended any meeting I was ever at and I think by 1973 he only kept his membership to remain in contact with a few of the members. Even at that time, most members didn’t know him.

After Jerry passed away, his widow Lorene contacted me to help sell several of his cars, she kept the 55 T-bird. His 40 standard station wagon was purchased and is still owned by club member Bob Lee, Butch Kent bought the 47 panel and restored it, a 1940 4 door went to Port Angeles and so forth. There wasn’t interest in the 40 standard coupe sitting with a blue tarp over it due to the garage roof that leaked where it was stored. I was NOT looking for another project. When Lorene indicated that all the spare 40 parts Jerry accumulated would go with the coupe I decided to take inventory of what was there. According to Lorene Jerry bought the car in 1957 and at that time it had a freeze cracked engine. Keep in mind, in 1957 you could go to any Ford dealer and buy just about anything you wanted for a 1940 Ford. A partial list of parts Jerry bought includes 2 complete sets of NOS fenders, 2 sets of NOS running boards, 5 NOS standard grilles, 2 NOS gas tanks, 2 NOS steering boxes complete with worm and secters, a NOS deck lid, a NOS deluxe hood (that eventually went on my wagon) and boxes and boxes of new parts. Always multiples, 4 sets of NOS windshield wiper towers and linkage, trim, gauges and parts too numerous to list. One item that completely blew me away was a NOS in the crate 59 series flathead. So, I ended up buying the car and all the parts as I had room in my Lynnwood shop. I don’t recall the exact date but in the 1990s I pulled the car out of the garage for the first time since 1957. >Onto page 6 >

We had a great turnout at the January meeting with over 40 members turning out and Paul Keller put on a great show with clips about the British built Ford Prefect. The Prefect was built in England from 1938 to 1961 and was an upscale version of the popular Ford Anglia. I had never heard of this car or model before.

The Jerry Stefano Coupe story continues now Now that I am retired and have my 40 station wagon done, I am finally getting to the coupe project. This car is in the best shape of any old one that I have ever owned. There was some surface rust on the top of the gray primed Cloud Mist Gray car near the antenna hole above the windshield. Because of this and the primer, I took the entire car down to bare metal. To my surprise, there were no dents, or damage ever to this car, no rust to repair. The rain gutters are perfect as is everything else. The floor still had shiny original paint and the tool area in the trunk still has the original waffle pattern tar paper in it. The original speedometer has 67k on the odometer. That tool area in the trunk >

No body work to do! I etched the bare metal, sealed it, primed with catalyzed build primer and blocked everything. I bought 2 ½ gallons of Cloud Mist Gray single stage urethane and painted the car in my driveway this summer. I wet sanded it with 1000, 2000 and 2500 grit paper and then went over it with buffing and polishing compound. As we say when working on our own stuff “it’s good enough for who it’s for”.

The new engine was completely disassembled and cleaned. I did NOT bore any life out of the engine, it is stock 3 3/16 bore but I did install a Scat 4” crank and Ross pistons with modern skinny rings. I put a 4 barrel intake manifold on it with a small 390 cfm Holley and a 6v positive ground alternator. Since this car will have a Columbia (assembled by Gary Duff with NOS Ford ring and pinion) I opted for a cam that will produce plenty of vacuum and have a smooth idle. The heads are stock cast iron NOS 59 series heads. Engine has been run for about an hour on a test stand and is ready to install.

The Jerry Stefano Coupe story continues now Mike Woodard “O” ringed the original transmission case which has the matching VIN of the frame and I installed NOS gears and bearing into it. I am installing Lincoln brakes on the front. When I was having the bumpers for my wagon chromed, I had all the chrome parts for the coupe done at the same time, I am glad I did because of what that costs now. This car is going to be my drive anywhere in any weather car. It has 15” wheels and I will be selecting blackwall radials. Several years ago, LeBaron Bonney was having a 30% off sale and I purchased a complete interior set for the car. Sanders auto glass in Vancouver WA supplied all new glass. Chris Olson in Bend supplied a new wiring kit. I am going to use this winter and spring to assemble the car and hopefully will have it ready for the 2019 touring season.

At our January meeting, we enjoyed a movie about Aloha Baker AKA Aloha Wanderwell.Born in Canada in 1906, she started her driving adventures in 1922 with Walter Wanderwell.

Being the first female to drive around the world, she started in France with a Model T and recorded the exploration in the film “Car and Camera Around the World”.

February Sunshine Committee Report is: Once again I am happy to report that the good word is out there with no reports of any of our club members facing really hard times with our health issues related to our aging. There are still a few of us who are in the fight to get all the way back to where we were before what ever happened to us did so, so keep those several members in your prayers and kind thoughts.

By the way it is not too early to start thinking about the Swap Meet and what things you might want to sell at the Club Booth. Rick Mann and I will be running it again. It is only 119 days from today as I write this, which is only a few weeks in “Senior Time”. Have a Great Spring. Dick Jauch
