Volume VIII Issue I
Fall 2017
Each year we talk about how our foundation is growing and for-
tunately, 2017 has been another great year for WOASF. We
awarded more scholarships for more money than ever before
bringing our total awards to $1,400,000! While we love to high-
light each of our current scholars on our website and Facebook
page, we enjoy when former scholars contact us about what they
are doing now and how WOASF has impacted their journey.
Samantha Gray is a four year award recipient. When we asked
for pictures from our graduating scholars, Samantha went above
and beyond the picture request. Here’s what she had to share:
“As a recent graduate, I wish to thank Wings Over America
Scholarship Foundation for your continuous support and encour-
agement throughout my undergraduate education at Swarthmore
College, where I received my BA in Linguistics with high honors
and dual minors in Cognitive Science and Psychology.
With WOASF’s assistance, I was also able to devote time each year to projects in
my field, working as a research assistant in Swarthmore College’s Endangered
Languages Lab to promote the documentation, preservation, and revitalization of
vulnerable languages. My efforts contributed towards the production of an online
“talking dictionary” for Gta', a language of the Munda family spoken in India.
During my sophomore and junior years, I attended summer workshops at the Nav-
ajo Language Academy, which is committed to preserving the Navajo language
and teaching it to younger generations. I also helped to edit a Navajo grammar
reference guide, and to develop a digitized library of previously recorded NLA
workshops for use by Navajo students and educators.
Following graduation, I took additional classes in neurolinguistics and morpho-
phonology at the Linguistic Society of America’s Summer Institute, before begin-
ning a five-year PhD program at the University of Chicago this fall. I plan to fo-
cus my graduate education on psycholinguistics and computational linguistics,
aiming potentially towards a career in natural language processing. Eventually, I'd
like to teach linguistics as well; my professors at Swarthmore were incredibly en-
thusiastic about their work (and about verbal morphology), and I want to spread
that enthusiasm to others. It is my aspiration as a linguist to use our knowledge of
language to improve how we communicate with each other in the future - between
cultures, between humans and computers, and ultimately, between worlds we may
know nothing of yet. Thank you, again, for supporting my goals and the aspira-
tions of so many other military dependents.”

Letter from the President
Once again Wings Over America Scholarship
Foundation had a banner year with over $200,000
in scholarships awarded. This level of awards
could not be achieved without the generosity of
our donors and the enthusiastic support of our
volunteers as well as the guidance and oversight
of the Board of Directors. Thank you to each of
you who help WOASF “Invest in the Best”.
Please mark your calendars for one of Hampton
Roads finest events…..the College A Cappella
Concert at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach
on October 28th, 2017. This special concert
will once again feature the “Hullabahoos" of the
University of Virginia and for the first time we’ll
present “No Ceiling” from the College of Wil-
liam & Mary. Please join us for a wonderful
evening of musical entertainment. Check the cal-
endar on the back of this issue and make your
plans for other WOASF events this year.
The fall issue includes recognition of this years
scholarship recipients. Please take a moment to
review the awards page. It is fascinating to see
where our scholars are from, as well as where
they are headed and we wish each of them con-
tinued success in their chosen field of study.
Complete scholar information can be found on
our website.
I would like to thank the Board members, volun-
teers and WOASF staff for all of their service
and support during my time as President of
WOASF. As of November 1, 2017 the spouse of
the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic
Fleet will no longer assume the position of Presi-
dent of WOASF but instead will become a mem-
ber of the Board of Directors. I would like to
welcome Terry Kelly to the Board of Directors,
her husband, RADM Roy Kelly, will take over as
AIRLANT on October 19th.
I look forward to continuing my support of
WOASF and I hope to see you at the College A
Cappella Concert! It is going to be another great
year for everyone to “Invest in the Best”.

Fair Winds and Following Seas
Annual College A Cappella Concert
Welcome Aboard
It is always sad when we have to say goodbye to our board members, but it is especially true when saying fair
winds and following seas to Marjy Starling, a longtime volunteer with WOASF. Marjy has held every “job” we
have, from executive director to board member. She was part of WOASF when we were still an all volunteer opera-
tion working out of New Hampshire House. Marjy has seen many changes and has been right there along the way,
with helping to incorporate the foundation, creating the first selection rubric and getting golf tournaments up and run-
ning in Virginia Beach and Pax River. She has always been the strongest of supporters for WOASF and we’ll miss
her very much.
As you saw on the previous page, Linda Lindsey will be leaving us as President of WOASF with the AIR-
LANT change of command this month. Linda’s volunteering with WOASF goes much further back than just her time
as the spouse of AIRLANT; she has been the foundation’s secretary, a scholarship committee member, San Diego
golf volunteer and much more. Like Marjy, Linda’s time with WOASF predates a professional staff and office.
Without our original core of volunteers, we wouldn’t be
where we are today.
As Linda and Marjy depart the pattern, we have
new directors coming in for a landing. First, please wel-
come Mark Haller, President of Tri-tec Manufacturing.
Mark is a west coast supporter, attending all of our
events in San Diego for several years. Mark is Vice
President of Navy League, Seattle and plans on expand-
ing our fundraising reach to the PACNORWEST. Look
for a new PACNORWEST golf tournament in 2018!
Also joining us is Terry Kelly, spouse of in-
coming COMNAVAIRLANT, RADM Roy Kelley.
Terry has experience with WOASF as a San Diego golf
volunteer. We all look forward to working with Terry!

Celebrate 30 years of
scholarships with the
$30 Bucks a Month Challenge
What would you do with an extra $30 per month? See a
movie, get Starbucks for a week? It would be nice, but
would it change your life?
If you donated $30 per month to WOASF, we would be
able to award several more scholarships to very deserv-
ing students. If 10 people signed up for the challenge,
that would be one new scholarship, 20 would be two
more, 50 would be five more.
Thirty dollars might not change your life, but it can
change the life of one of our Navy Dependents.
Help us celebrate our 30th anniversary and join us in
pledging $30 per month! It’s easy, just sign up for a
recurring donation on the donation page on our website.

Volunteers of the Year We have many wonderful volunteers that help WOASF plan and staff our events, prepare
applications and select our scholars. But two talented volunteers have gone above and be-
yond this year—Shelley Bolt and Kristin Walt! Both of these ladies were integral in our
2017 San Diego Weekend for Wings, our largest fundraiser to date!
Kristin is our Auction chair and is responsible for tracking and displaying over 100 items
for the event. As anyone who has been involved in a charity auction can attest, everything
hits at the last minute and you are herding cats with baskets up to the final minutes. But
Kristin is an exceptional “cat wrangler” and had everything in hand
well before go time. She knew every one of the items by heart and
had a plan to execute the whole event flawlessly. The auction not only
had fabulous items, but was also visually stunning.
Shelley is the penultimate organizer and keeps the whole weekend on track. A whiz with spread-
sheets, videos, Vimeo and Cava (new programs to us at WOASF), Shelley not only has every
last detail finalized but also presents everything in an exquisitely polished way. Hand her a
thumb drive of pictures and in five minutes you have a video ready to be posted to YouTube!
Shelley works throughout the year looking for new opportunities to elevate WOASF and our
events. Look for new online bidding at this year’s event, courtesy of Shelley’s work.
As a national organization with only a small staff in VA, we couldn’t complete our mission coast
to coast without our extortionary network of volunteers. To each and everyone of them, we, the staff, say thank you!
Receiving an award for my academics and community involvement has truly been a blessing. I am incredibly
grateful for all Navy sailors and their families who serve this country and create wonderful organizations such
as WOASF to help fellow members of our community. Growing up in a navy family has had its challenges,
but with exceptional generosity the naval community has created a system of support that continues to hold
the family dynamic together. With this grant, I can breathe much easier knowing that the stressful expenses of
college won’t be placed entirely upon me. Thank you so much Wings Over America for your continual gener-
osity and support of the families of the Naval Aviation Community - Caitlin Ware, University of Portland
