T he Frick Collection had anotherstrong year, highlighted by popular
exhibitions of substantial scholarly value,important acquisitions, varied publica-tions,growthofourBoardofTrustees,andincreased support from our loyal friends,withoutwhomouraccomplishmentswouldnothavebeenpossible.
ExhibitionspresentedattheFrickdeepenour visitors’ understanding of works in thepermanent collection and contribute to thescholarlyrecordofarthistory.Oneofourspe-cialtiesistheexaminationofasingleworkorofasmallgroupofpaintings.Examplesofthisapproach were two consecutive exhibitionsthat focusedonElGreco: Men in Armor: El Greco and Pulzone Face to FaceandEl Greco at The Frick Collection, the latter organizedinconcertwithEl Greco in New York atTheMetropolitanMuseumofArt. Together,theyfeatured all the works by the artist held inpubliccollectionsinNewYorkCity.
During the winter and spring months,the Frick mounted two large exhibitionsdevoted to works that ranged widely indate and medium. Masterpieces from the Scottish National Gallery featured tenpaint-ings executed between the fifteenth and thenineteenth centuries from one of the finestmuseumsintheworld.ThispresentationwasfollowedbyCoypel’s Don Quixote Tapestries: Illustrating a Spanish Novel in Eighteenth-Century France,acreativeprojecthighlight-ing two seldom-seen Frick tapestries. The
show brought together tapestries, paintings,engravings, and books from collectionsaroundtheworldtomarkthefour-hundredthanniversaryofthepublicationofthesecondvolumeofCervantes’scelebratednovel.
To end the fiscal year, we presented aselection of rarely exhibited landscapedrawings from the permanent collection.Simultaneously we welcomed, from theMuseo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico,FredericLeighton’sFlaming June,whichhadnotbeenonpublicviewinNewYorkinmorethan thirty-five years. Nearly 70,000 peoplesawtheiconicpainting,whichwasdisplayedtogether with the artist’s preparatory oilsketch,onloanfromaprivatecollection.
The majority of these shows wereaccompanied by catalogues written by ourcuratorialstaff.Itwasabanneryearforpub-licationsonthepermanentcollectionaswell,with projects ranging from an entire bookdevotedtoGiovanniBellini’sgreatSt. Francis in the Desert tothefirsthandbookhighlight-ing the museum’s superb decorative artscollection. Making such scholarly researchaccessible to the public is the responsibilityof the Education Department, whose inno-vativeprogramsservedsome25,000peoplethis past year. Since founder Henry Clay Frick’s deathin 1919, the institution has added some five
hundredpaintings,drawings,sculptures,anddecorative arts objects to its permanent col-lection.Wearepleasedtoreportthatthisyearweacquiredthreeworks:aself-portrait bytheSpanish Baroque painter Bartolomé EstebánMurillo, a rare Saint-Porchaire ewer datingto the mid-sixteenth century, and a bronzemedallion by David d’Angers. Murillo’s Self-Portrait, one of only two in existence, waspurchased in 1904 by Henry Clay Frick anddescendedintheFrickfamily.WearegratefultoTrusteeMrs.HenryClayFrick II forgiv-ing this important painting to the museum.We are grateful as well to Trustee SidneyR. Knafel foragenerousgift thatmadepos-siblethepurchaseof theewer,which,owingto researchconductedbyFrickcuratorsandconservators, has been newly attributed tofamedFrenchceramicistBernardPalissy.Thebronze medallion, L’Abbé de Lamennais, wasgivenbyJosephG.Reinis.
We welcomed three new Trustees thispast year: Elizabeth M. Eveillard, MonikaMcLennan, and J. Fife Symington IV. Theyadd wisdom, insight, and unique perspec-tives to an already engaged and dedicatedBoard of Trustees, and we are grateful fortheir service and their commitment to thisinstitution.
TheAutumnDinner,onOctober20, 2014,honoredTrusteeBarbaraFleischmanforhersupport of the Frick, as well as numerousculturalinstitutionsinNewYork,theUnitedStates, and around the world. Her generos-ity to theFrickhas enrichedmanyprojectsandinitiativesovertheyears,especiallyspe-cial exhibitions and the programs of theCenter for the History of Collecting. Thisyear’s event raised $1.2 million. The Young

FellowsBall,onMarch26,2015,raisednearly$300,000foreducationprograms.Theball’stheme,“ADanceintheSpanishCourt,”wasinspired by the special exhibition Coypel’s Don Quixote TapestriesandwasattendedbysomefivehundredYoungFellowsandtheirguests. TheSpringGardenParty,onJune 8,2015, celebrated Leighton’s Flaming June. TheannualpartyistheFrick’swayofsayingthankyoutoitsmanyhigh-levelsupporters.
We are grateful to our members whorenew year after year, and especially to themanywhoincreasedtheirsupportthisyear.Ourfundraisingeffortscontinuetogrow,asdoesthelevelofcommitmentofourdonors.This year, members and other supporterscontributed$470,000totheAnnualFund,a350%increaseover theamountraisedthreeyearsago.
In March 2015, we traveled to TheHaguewithTrusteesanddonorstovisit theMauritshuis, which was the venue for The
Frick Collection: Art Treasures from New York, an unprecedented exhibition of works onloan fromthis institution.Thiswas thefirstfull exhibition comprised of masterpiecesfrom the Frick at another museum. DuringitsruninTheHague, theshowwasseenbymorethan180,000people.
TheFrickArtReferenceLibrary,headedby Andrew W. Mellon Chief LibrarianStephen Bury, continues to introduce itsservices and ever-growing resources toa new generation of researchers throughoutreach initiatives including blog postsand social media networking. It remains aleader in digitization projects and this yearwas awarded its first-ever grant from theCarnegie Corporation of New York. The$100,000awardwillmakepossiblethedigi-tizationoffilesandothermaterialsrelatedtoHenry Clay Frick’s collectingactivities.YoucanreadmoreaboutthisgrantandtheotheractivitiesoftheLibrarybeginningonpage8.
InJune,wemadeamajorannouncementregarding the Frick’s planned expansion. Inresponse to an outpouring of affection forRussell Page’s garden on East 70th Street,we decided not to build on that space, asoriginallyplanned.Wetremendouslyappre-ciate thewarmthof feeling thatour friendsandneighborshaveshownfortheFrick, itshistoric buildings, and its grounds duringthepastmonths.Wearetakingtimenowtothoughtfully assess and consider our needsas we determine appropriate steps to ushertheFrick into the future.Asalways,wearedeeplygratefulforyourloyaltyandsupport.As you read more about the institution’sactivitiesinthefollowingpages,wehopeyouwillbeproudofthepartyouhaveplayedinensuring the Frick’s success. We also hopeyoushareourenthusiasmforwhatthefutureholdsforthisextraordinaryinstitution.

T hepasttwelvemonthshavebeenpar-ticularlyproductivefortheCuratorial
Department.Wepresentedeightlaudedexhi-bitions on a variety of subjects, produced anumberofscholarlypublications,andfurtheraugmentedourpublicprogramming.
The 2014–15 fiscal year began with thecloseofThe Poetry of Parmigianino’s “Schiava Turca.” Thisexhibitionmarkedtheoccasionoftheportrait’sfirstvisittotheUnitedStates,where it was seen by more than 50,000peopleduringitsthreemonthsonview.TheshowwasfollowedbyMen in Armor: El Greco and Pulzone Face to Face,onviewintheEastGalleryfromAugust5throughOctober26.Tomarkthe fourhundredthanniversaryofEl Greco’s death, the Frick paired Vincenzo Anastagi,purchasedbyHenryClayFrickin1913, with the rarely seen Portrait of Jacopo Boncompagni by the artist’s Roman con-temporary Scipione Pulzone, loaned by aprivate collector. Jeongho Park, one of ourAnneL.PouletCuratorialFellows,organizedtheexhibitionandwrote theaccompanyingcatalogue. Roberta Smith, in her review inThe New York Times,declared,“Theshowis,simplyput,astunner.”
The celebration of El Greco continuedintoFebruarywithan installation featuringthreeworksbytheartistacquiredbyHenryClayFrickbetween1905and1913.St. Jerome,Vincenzo Anastagi, and Purification of the
Temple were displayed side by side for thefirsttimeinapresentationorganizedincon-certwithTheMetropolitanMuseumofArt’sEl Greco in New York.
Masterpieces from the Scottish National Gallery opened on November 4, 2014. Theshow featured ten paintings that invitedilluminating comparisons to works fromthe Frick’s permanent collection. KarenRosenberg stated in The New York Times, that, when taken together, the Scotlandloans “enhance the overall Frick experi-ence, insinuatingthemselvesintothecollec-tion.” Highlights included Botticelli’s Virgin Adoring the Sleeping Child, never beforeexhibited in theUnitedStates,andSargent’sstrikingportraitLady Agnew of Lochnaw.ElGreco,Watteau,Velázquez,Raeburn,Ramsay,Reynolds,Gainsborough,andConstableweretheotherartistsfeaturedintheshow.SeniorCuratorSusanGalassicoordinatedtheFrickinstallation, which was accompanied by acataloguepublishedbytheNationalGalleriesof Scotland. A robust series of public pro-gramsaccompaniedtheexhibition,includingthree lectures, a seminar, numerous guidedschool visits, and gallery conversations. Wewere especially pleased to welcome morethan600visitorsonJanuary30toafreenightcelebratingtheshow.
TheFrickwasthesolevenueforCoypel’sDon Quixote Tapestries: Illustrating a Spanish Novel in Eighteenth-Century France,onviewfrom February 25 through May 17, 2015.CharlesCoypel,paintertoLouisXV,createda series of twenty-eight paintings inspiredby Cervantes’s Don Quixote, commissionedby the Gobelins manufactory in Paris forthepurposeofbeingwoven into tapestries.
Ourexhibitionbroughttogetheracompleteseriesofthescenes,includingfiveofCoypel’soriginalpaintingsthathadneverbeforebeenseen in New York, loaned from the PalaisImpérial de Compiègne and the MuséeJacquemart-André,Paris.Thesewerejoinedby three Gobelins tapestry panels from theJ.PaulGettyMuseumandtwoFlemishtap-estries inspired by Coypel from the Frick’spermanent collection. The series was com-pleted by eighteen prints and books fromtheHispanicSocietyofAmerica,NewYork.Charlotte Vignon, Curator of DecorativeArts, organized the show and wrote theaccompanying catalogue. To complementthe exhibition, a series of five salon eve-ningsexploredtherichperformancehistoryof Cervantes’s literary masterpiece throughdance,film,andmusic.
On April 5, 2015, we bade farewell toEnlightenment and Beauty: Sculptures by Houdon and Clodion, a yearlong exhibitionthat brought together for the first time theFrick’s importantworksby twoof the fore-most sculptors of late-eighteenth-centuryFrance.TheseexquisiteobjectsinmarbleandterracottawerejoinedinthePorticoGallerybysignificantexamplesfromNewYork–areaprivate collections. On November 10, 2014,wehelda studyday inspiredby theexhibi-tion. Organized by Associate ConservatorJulia Day, the program focused on eigh-teenth- and nineteenth-century terracottaswith presentations on treatment, analysis,and construction given by an internationalgroupofconservatorsandscientists.

Collection, another yearlong exhibition thatwill run through April 24, 2016. Between1916 and 1918, Henry Clay Frick purchasedseveral important pieces of Sèvres porce-lain, including vases, potpourris, jugs andbasins, plates, a tea service, and a table.Organized by Charlotte Vignon, the showexplores theroleSèvresporcelainplayed ineighteenth-centuryFrance,aswellasduringtheAmericanGildedAge.
The special atmosphere of our gallerieshas as much to do with our superb collec-tion of decorative arts as it does with theOld Master paintings that line the walls.To celebrate these objects, in May we pub-lishedtheDecorative Arts Handbook,thefirstguidebookdedicatedtotheFrick’sextensiveholdingsinthisarea.ThehandbookfeaturestextbyCharlotteVignonandnewphotogra-phy of carefully selected pieces, from stun-ningLimogesenamelsandSèvresporcelainto fine eighteenth-century French furnitureandearlyclocksandwatches.
Leighton’s Flaming June debuted to greatacclaim on June 9, marking the belovedpainting’sfirstappearanceinNewYorkCityinmorethanthirty-fiveyears.Onloanfromthe Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico,Flaming June was displayed alongside theFrick’s four full-length portraits by JamesMcNeill Whistler as well as Leighton’s pre-paratory oil sketch, on loan from a privatecollection. The exhibition was organized bySusan Grace Galassi and complemented byanillustratedcataloguewithessaysbyGalassiandPabloPérezd’Ors,AssociateCuratorofEuropeanArt,MuseodeArtedePonce.OnJune26,wecelebratedLeighton’smasterpiecewith a free evening of special programing
inspired by the painting, including gallerytalks,opensketching,andlivemusic.
Landscape Drawings in The Frick CollectionalsoopenedonJune9.Onviewinthe Cabinet Gallery, this exhibition featuredtherecentlyacquiredView of Dieppe Harborby Antoine Vollon, the generous gift of Dr.CarolFormanTabler.Thewatercolorwaspre-sented alongside rarely exhibited landscapedrawings from the permanent collection byTitian,ClaudeLorrain,Corot,Gainsborough,Rembrandt,Rousseau,andWhistler.
Weacquiredthreenewobjectsthisyear,including a bronze medallion by Davidd’Angers, L’Abbé de Lamennais, generouslygivenbyJosephG.Reinis.Attheendof2014,Trustee Mrs. Henry Clay Frick II donatedBartolomé Estebán Murillo’s striking Self-Portrait.Finally,in2015,throughtheSidneyR. Knafel Fund, we purchased a rare Saint-Porchaire ewer, newly attributed to the cel-ebratedceramicistBernardPalissy.
Special long-term loans provide anopportunity for visitors to draw enlighten-ingcomparisonswithobjectsintheperma-nent collection. Trustee Mrs. Henry ClayFrickIIloanedpendantportraitsbyFrancisCotes depicting Sir Griffith Boynton, 6thBaronet, and his wife, Mary Heblethwayte,Lady Boynton. Other works on loan areJean-AntoineHoudon’sLa Grive Morte(TheHorvitz Collection, Boston); GuillaumeBoichot’s Pair of Vases Depicting the Calydonian Boar Hunt(privatecollection);apairofsilverbasinsandfountainsbyLewinDedekeandJohannWilhelmVoigtI(privatecollection); a Qing dynasty garniture of aclock and two vases (private collection); aSèvres potpourri vase and cover (private
collection); and Simone Martini’s Christ on the Cross between the Virgin and Saint John(PhillipsFamilyCollection).
Although works acquired by HenryClay Frick are prohibited by the terms ofhis will from leaving One East SeventiethStreet, works acquired after his death canbeloanedtoothermuseums,therebyreach-ing audiences throughout the United Statesand Europe. This past year, we loanedan unprecedented seventy-nine pieces ofblue-and-white porcelain from the ChildsFrick Bequest (1965) to the Nassau CountyMuseumofArtinRoslyn,NewYork,whichonce was the residence of Childs Frick andhis family. The exhibition, China Then and Now, wasonviewfromNovember22,2014,throughMay10,2015.Aspartofa recipro-cal exchange program between the Frickand the Royal Picture Gallery, Mauritshuis,The Hague, the Mauritshuis borrowedthirty-sixFrickworks—seventeenpaintings,eight works on paper, eight sculptures, andthree decorative arts objects—for The Frick Collection: Art Treasures from New York(February5throughMay10,2015).
InJune,followingthereturnoftheworksloanedtoMauritshuis,wemadeanumberofchangestothedisplayofobjects inthegal-leries.ThemostsignificanttookplaceintheEastGallery,whichwasmodeledtoevokeaBritishcountryhouseinitsjuxtapositionofpaintings, sculptures, and furniture. ThreeofourprizedVanDyckportraitsofEnglishsitters, which had been in storage for sev-eral years, were installed alongside worksby David, Constable, Goya, and Chinard,amongothers,andcomplementedbyasuiteofGobelinstapestry–coveredfurniture.

Contributing greatly to permanent col-lection scholarship, theFrickpublished Ina New Light: Giovanni Bellini’s “St. Francis in the Desert” inassociationwithDGilesLimited.The book comprises essays and technicalstudies by leading experts in the fields ofpaintingsconservation,Venetianart,thehis-tory of collecting, and Franciscan theology,presenting valuable new insight into one ofthemuseum’smostcelebratedmasterworks.
TheConservationDepartmentisrespon-siblefortheongoingtreatmentandresearchof the permanent collection, special loans,and the historic house. Chief ConservatorJoseph Godla continued his study of thetechniques of eighteenth-century gilderand chaser Pierre Gouthière and also con-ducted a careful comparison of ceramicelementsadorningthenewlyacquiredSaint-Porchaire ewer and molds from BernardPalissy’s sixteenth-century Paris workshop.AssociateConservatorJuliaDaycarriedouta Renaissance bronze patina analysis withcolleagues from The Metropolitan Museumof Art. In anticipation of the Don Quixoteexhibition,theconservationteaminstalledanewlight-filteringsystemontheskylightsoftheOvalRoomandtheEastGallerytopro-tect the light-sensitivetapestriesandprints.Inthevaults,expandedmuseum-gradecabi-netswereaddedforobjectstorage.
Houdon’sDiana returned to thePorticoGallery following Julia Day’s technicalexamination of the sculpture’s base and thereworking of its pedestal mount. Ruisdael’sLandscape with a Footbridge looksbeautiful
after undergoing treatment and analysis atThe Metropolitan Museum of Art’s paint-ings conservation lab. In advance of nextyear’sexhibitionVan Dyck: The Anatomy of Portraiture, VanDyck’sPortrait of a Genoese Noblewomanunderwenttreatmentandanal-ysis at the Met. Specialists in Switzerlandtreated the Breguet Pocket Watch with Tourbillon to repair damage to the handsandbezel.
Wecontinuetostrivetoenrichandservethe public through a wide range of pro-gramming. During fiscal year 2014–15, theEducation Department organized and pre-sentednearly1,180eventsandprogramsforanunprecedented25,000participants.Morethan1,500peopleattendedourfreelectures,and thousands more watched live streamsor the archived webcasts on our Web site.Thisyear’sseriesincludedRichardOrmond’s“Sargent’s Lady Agnew of Lochnaw,” AlvarGonzález-Palacios’s “A Precious Vision ofAntiquity” (Alex Gordon Lecture in theHistory of Art), and the hugely popularArtists,Poets,andWritersLecturegivenbybest-sellingauthorHilaryMantel.
Other highlights included our thirdannualTeenNightandfourthannualCollegeNight, in which students enjoyed free after-hours admission to the museum and par-ticipated in a variety of activities, includingsketching,musicperformances,gallerytalks,and conversations with museum staff. Wewelcomedmorethan3,400studentsthroughour guided school visit program and con-tinue to offer an array of after-school and
weekendprograms.Aspartofourcommit-ment to excellence in teaching, in the fallwe launchedtheTeachingFellowsProgram,anew initiative topreparehighlymotivatedundergraduateandgraduatestudentstoleadschoolvisitsforfifththroughtwelfthgraders.
Several new colleagues joined us thisyear.IntheEducationDepartment,RebeccaSzantyrbecameournewestSamuelH.KressInterpretive Fellow, and Ryder O’Dell cameon board as Programs Assistant. JeannetteSharpless became our first RegistrarAssistant, and Jenna Nugent and EloiseOwens respectively assumed the roles ofAssistanttotheChiefCuratorandCuratorialAssistant.InFebruary,formerGuestCuratorAimeeNgbecameAssociateCurator.Allareexcellentadditionstothedepartment.
In the midst of welcoming many newfaces, we said good-bye to Denise Allen, agenerous colleague and mentor who orga-nizedacclaimedexhibitionsandcontributedsignificantly to this institution throughouthertwelve-yeartenure.Wewishherwell inhernewendeavorasCuratorinthedepart-ment of European sculpture and decorativeartsatTheMetropolitanMuseumofArt.
Mystaffcontinuestoimpressmethroughtheirhardworkanddedication.Theirenthu-siasmandexpertiseelevatethequalityofourexhibitions,publications,andprograms,andforthisIamhugelygrateful.Ilookforwardto what promises to be another remarkableyearahead.

A t a time when many believe thatthe book and the library are dead,
the Frick Art Reference Library is thriving,and I am proud to report that it enjoyedanother banner year. The Library is notonly an essential destination for scholars,butitisalsorenownedforitselectronicser-vices,includingdatabases,digitizedcontent,andWebarchives—servicesthattheLibraryprovides to researchers around the world,twenty-fourhoursaday,yearround.Inaddi-tion,thisyearthestaffrespondedtoarecordnumberofemailqueries.TheLibrary’spio-neering work in the area of digital art his-tory,thefellowshipsitsupportsthroughtheCenter for the History of Collecting, andresearch carried out by its staff members(publishedbothinprintanddigitally)posi-tionsitasaleadingartresearchinstituteforthetwenty-firstcentury.
In April 2015, we received notificationthat the Library was awarded its first-evergrantfromtheCarnegieCorporationofNewYork.This$100,000awardwillmakepossiblethe digitization of files and other materialsrelatedtoHenryClayFrick’scollectingactivi-ties. The materials include correspondence,invoices,inventories,andotherprintedmate-rials documenting the selection, purchase,anddispositionofworksofartinMr.Frick’scollection. This project will put into the
public domain a unique archive of materi-als of great cultural and educational value,and we are deeply grateful to the CarnegieCorporationforsupportingthiswork.
The New York Art Resources Consort-ium (nyarc), which consists of the FrickArt Reference Library and the libraries ofthe Brooklyn Museum and the Museum ofModernArt,enteredthefinalyearofitsWebarchivingproject,whichisfundedbyagrantfromtheAndrewW.MellonFoundationandadministeredbytheFrick.Wesurpassedthemilestone of one hundred Web sites cap-tured through Archive-It in our collectingcategoriesofcataloguesraisonnés,auctions,NewYorkgalleries,anddigitalartresourcesto which we already link as live Web sitesin our catalogue, Frick Research CatalogOnline(fresco),artists’Websites,andourown institutional Web sites. A metadataapplicationprofileforthedescriptionofWebarchived resources was developed, whichpromisestoserveasaguidetobestpracticesfor nyarc and the larger Web archivingcommunity. Library staff worked closelywith colleagues at Columbia Universityand together participated in colloquia onWeb archiving at Columbia and in a jointpanelattheUniversityofAarhus,Denmark.During an eight-month residency at theLibrary, Karl Blumenthal, National DigitalStewardship Resident, completed pioneer-ing quality assurance guidelines for WebarchivingandaWebsitepreservationpolicy.
Digitization has continued apace: theLibrary provided 326 digital copies of rareauctioncatalogsandcorrespondingdescrip-tivemetadatatoBrill forpublicationinArtSales Catalog Online (for which the Frick
receives royalties). In October, we securedan $11,000 grant from the MetropolitanNewYorkLibraryCouncil (metro) for theGilded Age IV Digitization Project. This isthe fourth consecutive digitization projectfunded by metro, and I am proud thattheFrickhas received themostdigitizationgrants from metro of any member institu-tion. The project to digitize and catalogonlinetheFrick’sPhotoarchiveholdingsforworks of art by American artists is welladvanced and on track for completion in2016. This is part of the Library’s contribu-tiontopharos,theinternationalconsortiumof photo archives. A grant for $60,000 wasawardedbytheSamuelH.KressFoundationto support the development of a searchableimagerecognitiondatabaseforphotographsofItalianpaintingsheldbyfiveinstitutionalmembers of the consortium. The Libraryalso developed a preservation strategy forelectronic institutional materials (such asemails, exhibition videos, and lecture andconcert recordings), and staff began orga-nizing and processing the materials usingPreservica, a software service for keepingdigitalrecordssafeandaccessibleovertime.
The Library’s digital art history initia-tives continue to open dialogues with newresearchcommunities inadditiontoattract-ing new audiences from the traditional artresearchdisciplines.Staffmemberspresentedtheirfindingsmadethroughdigitalresearchtoolsatconferences,establishedpartnershipsforcollaborativeprojectswithgraduatepro-grams outside the arena of art history, andtaught researchers how to access and usesoftware tools. This has raised the publicprofile of the Library in the field of digital

humanities research. On April 9, 2015, theLibrary collaborated with the Institute ofFine Arts, New York University, to presentWorkshop on Digital Art History: Resources for Graduate Research, which included sessionson the current Frick digital research initia-tives;thepharosinternationalconsortiumofphotoarchives;andopensourcetoolsthatareavailableorbeingdevelopedfordatavisual-ization,imagerecognitionandanalysis,datascraping,andgeographicandtemporalmap-ping.Thecollaborationbetween theLibraryand the New York University PolytechnicSchoolofEngineering,whichbeganlastfall,has produced a prototype of an interactivetooltogather,organize,andcomparedigitalimagesofworksofart.Thetool,calledAries,replicatesthefunctioningofthephysicallightbox that is traditionally used for comparingslidesinarthistoricalresearch.
OnNovember5,2014,theCenterfortheHistoryofCollectingpresented“ChatsworthandWaddesdon:CollectingThenandNow,”aconversationwiththeDukeofDevonshireand Lord Rothschild, moderated by SirDavid Cannadine. The event—consideredto be one of the Center’s highlights of theyear—was supported by a gift of $25,000byLarryGagosian,whohostedadinner inhonor of the speakers at Gagosian Galleryfollowing the program. On April 20, 2015,Shelby White gave back-to-back tours ofherpersonalcollectionofantiquitiesfortheFellows Committee for the Center for theHistoryofCollecting. TheKressFoundation
renewed two short-term fellowships atthe Center, awarding $60,000 over twoyears. Likewise, the Leon Levy FoundationawardedtheCenter$181,500overthreeyearstosupporttwoLeonLevylong-termfellow-ships each year. The Center has supportedmore than fifty fellows since its foundingin 2007; collectively their published worktestifiestothevitalityofthisburgeoningdis-cipline.WorkingwiththeCenterforItalianModern Art, the Library launched a NewYork Area Art History Fellows network toenable fellows from various institutions tomeet socially and share research interests;on December 8, 2014, the Library hosted awell-attended reception with talks given byFrickfellows.
A book launch for the Center’s British Models of Art Collecting and the American Response: Reflections across the Pond washeld on December 17. “El Greco Comes toAmerica: The Discovery of a Modern OldMaster,” a symposium underwritten by theStavros Niarchos Foundation, took place onJanuary 26, 2015. A Market for Merchant Princes: Collecting Italian Renaissance Painting in America, edited by Center Director IngeReist,waspublishedinJanuaryasthesecondvolume of the Penn State Press series, TheFrick Collection Studies in the History ofCollectinginAmerica.Atwo-daysymposium,May 8–9,“SeenthroughtheCollector’sLens:150 Years of Photography,” covered a rangeof topics from Queen Victoria and PrinceAlbert’scollectingtopracticestoday.Malcolm

Twotelevisionprogramshighlightedtherange and depth of the Library’s activities.On September 22, 2014, the noted FrenchjournalistAnneSinclairwas interviewed inthe Reading Room for a segment on CBSSundayMorningaboutherbiographyofhergrandfather, Paul Rosenberg, who ownedseveral of the most influential art galleriesinEuropebeforeWorldWarII.Ms. Sinclairand I were filmed together examining theLibrary’s rich collection of Rosenberg pub-lications from Paris, London, and NewYork, as well as Paul Rosenberg Galleryphotographs held by the Photoarchive. OnNovember 13, CBS News taped a segmentfeaturingLibrarystafffocusingontheuseofWikipediainthemuseumandgalleryworld.
