Dear Friends,
This will just be a short letter as I am through in Fife to be with my mother in her
last hours here on earth. (Since writing this I was with her when she died on
Thursday22nd March) I very much appreciate the loving support that I have been
given by both congregations, my ministerial colleagues and others.
I am more appreciative of the Easter message than ever as I wait on the Lord taking
her to her home in glory. It is because of Easter that even at a time like this I can
still rejoice. She has told me several times over the last 20 years or more that she
would like a hymn that we often sing at Easter sung to be sungat her funeral, Thine
be the glory, risen, conquering Son. Endless is the victory thou o’er death has won.
She gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ over 80 years ago when she was a wee
orphan girl in Dr Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong, India, and she has been a faithful
servant ever since. We have had several hymns playing at her bedside over the past
few days, Many have been relevant as they speak of the glory that awaits those who
have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. One that I find particularly relevant is:
It includes the words:
Boldly I approach your throne.
Blameless now I’m running home.
By your blood I come,
Welcomed as your own,
Into the arms of majesty.
That hymn is based on Hebrews 4:14-16 which gives us the assurance that we can
stand blameless before God only because Jesus Christ took our punishment upon
himself when he died on Calvary and that when he rose from the dead he took away
its power. His invitation to eternal life is open to all. May you know the reality of
that truth in your heart this Easter.
Every Blessing,
Colin A Strong.

Fenwick Garden Club
Its good to report on a highly successful start to the year. It began with a pleasant
and relaxing Burns Night at the Fenwick and was followed up in February with
our well-supported AGM which saw Edna Muirhead retiring from the committee
and Norma Barr and Sandra McPherson joining. The evening was coupled with
the annual quiz night with questions skilfully provided by Andrew Taylor, son of
our late president, Jean Taylor. At the March meeting we had a presentation by
Andrea Jones of Mayfield Flowers who showed us her work in setting up and
developing an entirely organic flower garden out of a rough field. This was
fascination and challenging and gave us a great deal to think about in our own
gardening.
John West of Uplawmoor will visit us on 19th April to talk about planning,
pruning and caring for old roses and he will also act as judge for the annual Bulb
Show. The categories for the Show are: 1 hyacinth in water; 1 flowering pot plant;
bowl of miniature daffodils; Bowl of 3 hyacinths; foliage pot plant.

Fenwick held their Party Night on Thursday, 8th March. Although there was no
‘formal entertainment’, members were treated to an evening of chat, food and
party games. It was a very relaxed evening until.the party games started: Irish
Bingo was followed by Pass the Parcel and then a game which involved 2 teams:
dressing up and running round the tables. I am delighted to say that no-one ended
up in A & E – how do you explain injuries received at a ‘Rural’ Party Night, now
that would be the talk of the steamie! Suffice to say practise at the January sales
stood one of our smallest members in good stead!! Could this be a new Olympic
sport???
It was a busy evening which opened with the reading of the Minutes,
correspondence and forthcoming events. Member are reminded of the Quiz Night
on April 20th: names are required for teams and the Annual Outing to Cardwell
Garden Centre followed by tea at Nardini’s to which all are welcome. Names
please for both events to Norma Barr (01355 500288) or Maureen Rodger (01560
600223) as soon as possible.

Moscow SWI
On a cold evening on 5th March, in the Hogg Hall, Galston, Alastair Swan showed
his photographs in big screen format, with accompanying music. This ranged
from fascinating shots of hidden Ayrshire to the rather warmer climes of French
Polynesia and back to the cold of Scotland and Montana for some amazing wild
animal photography. Alastair also gave us some amusing insights into how the
photos were taken. He was then kept busy judging all the competitions;
results as follows:- Sandwich Tray 1 Anne Borthwick 2 Jean Caldwell, 3 Elsie
Nisbet, Article beginning with ‘M’ 1 Rae Lind, 2 Lily Watson 3 Anne
Borthwick.
The bulb competition was also held and the hall was filled with the lovely
perfume of hyacinths; One Amarylis 1 Rosie Pensom 2 Anne Borthwick 3 Mary
Montgomerie, Three blue hyacinths 1 Catherine Barr (Trophy for the best in
show), 2 Mary Montgomerie. Mai Lawrence and Moira Young were the
hostesses and Rosie Pensom gave a fulsome vote of thanks

FENWICK COMMUNITY COUNCIL Fenwick Community Council met on Wednesday 14th March. Cllr. Jenkins and
Elaine Millar of East Ayrshire Vibrant Communities and 3 members of the public
were in attendance.
Further to our discussions in February, a letter of complaint on behalf of Fenwick
Community Council was submitted to John Burns, Chief Executive, NHS
Ayrshire and Arran Health Board on 27th February and was copied to Eddie
Fraser, Director Health and Social Care Partnership, East Ayrshire Council. Eddie
Fraser has replied to say that he will progress a co-ordinated response from
himself, John Burns and Pamela Milliken with associated learning. We sincerely
hope our comments will be taken on board. The outcome of the appeal to the
National Appeal Panel is expected at some point in April.
Two very successful litter picks were held on Saturday 10th March and Sunday
18th March. Thank you to everyone who turned up to help, with a special mention
for the Primary School pupils who got involved. It was great to see old and new
faces and to enjoy the community spirit that was so evident on both days. The
verges around the village look so much better and it would be lovely if they
stayed that way. Well we can always dream!
Cllr. Jenkins reminded us that minutes and agendas for East Ayrshire Council
Committees are available on the EAC website. These can be very useful if you
want to keep up with what is happening within the Council. Cabinet has approved
a 3% increase in Council Tax and a further £6m has been allocated to Ayrshire
Roads Alliance in response to the state of the roads in East Ayrshire. Work
continues within the Council to make savings in line with Transformation
Strategy 2. Cllr. Jenkins also agreed to follow up the lack of response to
Community Council emails from Ayrshire Roads Alliance on behalf of the
Community Council.
Elaine Millar summarised the Community Empowerment Act and explained the
background to the Community Engagement Framework in East Ayrshire. As a
group we explored how we currently engage with the local community, what
works well and what can be improved. We would very much welcome feedback
from you on any aspect of the Community Council’s work within the village and
how we can communicate and engage more effectively with local residents.
For the period to 8th March, the Police reported an assault with apprehension and
an attempted housebreaking. No officers attended the meeting.
Plans for the Cemetery Car Park have now been submitted to EAC Planning but
have not yet been validated and are not yet available for comment on the website.
£123,000 has been approved for the project.
Covenanter Page 12
We are delighted that two residents have indicated that they are interested in
joining Fenwick Community Council. A vote will be taken on their co-option at
the next meeting. If successfully voted on, this will again bring the Community
Council up to full strength.
Our next meeting is Wednesday 18th April at 7.30pm in Fenwick Primary School.
Please come along – we’d really love to see you there!
LIGHT UP FENWICK
We have had a fantastic response to the Christmas Lights project and would like
to say a huge thank you to the local businesses and individuals who have already
donated or pledged their financial support. Also thank you to those who are
giving of their time and energy to pursue the project. There are some fantastic
ideas and initiatives and the level of energy and community spirit just shows what
can be achieved when we work together.
The group aims to light up as many lamp posts on Main Road as is realistically
possible. We also hope to have a Christmas tree at either end of the village and a
“Switch On” event on Saturday 1st December where everyone can get involved.
On the same evening, with the support of local residents, we hope to launch a
Christmas Window Wanderland throughout the village which, hopefully, will
create quite a spectacle for residents and visitors alike.
On Saturday 17th March we pitched for £800 of funding for “Light up Fenwick –
Light up Lives” at the Annick Ward Participatory Budgeting Event in Stewarton.
Sadly, on this occasion we were not successful in being awarded funds for our
project. Thank you to everyone for all the effort that went into the bid and to
everyone who turned up to vote for us.
If you would like to donate to Light up Fenwick, you will find a donation
envelope in this edition of the Covenanter. Any amount you can spare would be
enormously appreciated. Envelopes can be returned to the Kings Arms, Logan’s
Larder or the Church offering plate. Our thanks to the Covenanter Team for their
support in allowing us to raise funds through the Church Magazine and to the
various venues for acting as collection points.
