Blue LagoonBest for: RelaxationA lava field in Grindavík, Iceland has been turned into a gigantic open-air spa rich in silica and sulfur minerals. The staggeringly blue water, surrounded by volcanic landscape makes taking a dip in the water feel like stepping into a whole other world. At 37-39 degrees Celsius, the water is perfect to sit back, relax and enjoy the superb views. You can also relax sore muscles under the man-made waterfall or indulge in a silica mud mask.
Lapland Ice Driving Best for: ThrillsNothing gets your heart racing like driving
As you fly into the fjords and endless forests of Europe’s northernmost lands, the feeling of starting an epic journey is unmistakable. The mother of all bucket lists, adventures don’t get any bigger and better than those in the Scandinavian lands. Here’s a complete chronicle of all the experiences your trip to the north of Europe must include:
on a Formula 1 circuit in the heart of the Swedish Lapland. Drifting on hundreds of frozen lakes surrounded by an all-white landscape of jaw-dropping natural beauty is the ultimate thrill, especially since you’re unlikely to spot anything or anyone else for miles and miles around. Hear the engines roar, feel your heartbeat get faster and take the beauties out for a spin.
Glass IgloosBest for: Star-gazingIn the midst of pine-forests covered in pure white ice, the Arctic skies shine bright in the night. That’s why huddling up in a cozy glass igloo to look at the Northern Lights or simply watching the stars sparkle in the nights is an unforgettable, must have
experience. Ideal for a romantic night out, the glass igloos are warm and inviting with views that will make your heart flutter.
Northern LightsBest for: Your bucket listWatching the Arctic skies ablaze in hues of green, violet and pink is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, as they are commonly known, will make your winter trip up north to the Lapland completely worth the while. After all this is the singlemost important item to cross off your bucket-list in a landscape that is a treasure trove of bucket list activities. This season, February to March are the best months for sighting and 9 pm to 2 am - the most favourable hours.
Whale WatchingBest for: Wildlife enthusiastsA close encounter with the most magnificent creatures of them all, the whale, is one of the high points of any holiday in the Lapland. You can look forward to spotting pilot whales, minke whales, humpbacks, dolphins and killer
The Ultimate Scandinavian
Bucket List
7The Captain’s Getaways
whales, some as large as a Boeing 737, off the Norwegian coast in the summer months (starting from April onwards). A word of caution: the whale-watching experience can be pretty darn addictive, once you’ve spotted your first few, there’s a good chance you’ll be a convert and plan many more holidays around such expeditions.
South-Shore Adventure Best for: Nature loversA day spent in the picturesque South Shore of Iceland is the perfect way to see its diverse landscape. Wear your walking shoes and charge those camera batteries because everything on your route will blow your mind away. Waterfalls, glaciers, black-sand beaches and charming little villages will cross your path, as will Viking sagas waiting to be told.
Oslo to Bergen Rail TripBest for: EveryoneA close rival of the Swiss rail journeys, the train from Oslo to Bergen will have you staring out of the windows in awe. Forgetting to blink is a common side-
effect of the ride, as you cross through a mesmerizing panorama of mountains, lakes, fjords and the countryside in general. Touted as Europe’s highest railway line, this is also one of the most gorgeous, views-wise. Covering over 3,000 kilometres of enthralling natural beauty and traversing through more than 700 tunnels and 3,000 bridges, you can’t miss getting on this train!
Trip to Santas’ VillageBest for: The little onesChristmas may have passed but at Santa Claus’ official home in Rovaniemi, the celebrations go on every single day. Crossing the Arctic Circle, you can step into Santa’s world where you can chat with him at the official Santa Claus Office, drop in your present requests at the official Santa Claus Main Post Office, pet his reindeers and go dashing through the snow in a sleigh and take a class at the elf-school.
The Scandinavian SetThe northern most part of Europe, above the Baltic Sea, comprises the Scandinavian peninsula. Though Scandinavia is used to describe three countries, broadly speaking, a trip to Europe’s Nordic region covers the following:
Norway: One of the most beautiful countries in the world, and not just Europe! Covered in fjords and glaciers, this is the land of the great outdoors.
Sweden: Vikings, reindeers, ABBA, IKEA and H&M – Sweden is a whole lot of different things, it’s gorgeous vista notwithstanding.
Denmark: Boasting of a spectacular coastline, Denmark is home to castles, museums, galleries and gardens.
Finland: The land of many lakes and also the official home of Santa Claus.
Iceland: The diverse landscape ranges from volcanic formations to natural hot springs, waterfalls and glaciers.

IN HIGH
SPIRITS
Spirit of Speyside Dates: 28th April – 2nd MayWhere: Carrbridge, Scotalnd Who should go: Whiskey Aficionados
Speyside is Scotland’s largest producer of whiskey and hitherto, the perfect setting to celebrate the single-malt. If you’re of the opinion that the best thing you could do with whiskey is sip on it, this festival will force you to re-think. Join fellow whiskey connoisseurs from around the world as they savour the fine taste of whiskey through 400 different events, Scottish style. Here’s the lowdown of what you can expect:
§Get to know your favourite drink – up, close and personal with dedicated distillery tours, tutored tastings and talks. Might we add that Speyside’s distilleries boast some of the most picturesque locations in the world. §Take home a dram (or many) from the whiskey auctions and fairs §Partake in fine dining, live music and local crafts §Prepare for adventures in the Speyside countryside – canoe trips
on River Spey, cycling and fishing expeditions, or go explore one of the many castles and beaches
VieVinumDates: 4 th June – 6th JuneWhere: Vienna, AustriaWho should go: Wine enthusiasts
France and Italy may be the most revered meccas of wine in Europe, but Austria’s all set to give them a run for their vineyards with VieVinum, a festival that showcases more than 550 top wine-makers from around the world. Dubbed as wine heaven, the festival sees wine makers and wine lovers congregate for three days to enjoy little-known, home-grown flavours and leading international brands. Great wine loves good company and as such you can also look forward to some very interesting kick-off events.
§Enjoy specialised tastings and unlimited glass service §Sample a vast variety of wines from different countries and learn
about new wine styles and philosophies in wine –making § If you’re really interested in the wine-making process or want to
discuss your favourite wine with a seasoned vintner, then this is the place §VieVinum has a lot to offer gastronomy-wise. From fresh bread and
choicest cheese to gournet delicacies from around the world. Discover a whole menu that can be paired with your glass of wine.
Strong Beer FestivalDates: February 26th – March 13thWhere: Munich, GermanyWho should go: Beer buffsWhile Munich already has the biggest beer bash of them all, Oktoberfest in September/October, the Strong Beer Festival has the unique distinction of being the fifth season of Germany, the season to chug beer. Dubbed as Starkbierzeit (Strong Beer Time), this early spring fiesta is also a largely Bavarian celebration doling out local beer but in much smaller quantities than the Oktoberfest, just enough to last through the spring season. §Strong Beer Festival is a bit of a misnomer, as the beer served in
this festival is hardly more potent than your regular pint. Strong Beer gets its name from the slightly sweeter and full-bodied flavour, perhaps a result of adding extra malt and a several other ingredients like toffee, caramel, cloves and sugar. §Local breweries set up a tent dishing out their concoctions and you
can spend the evening sampling whichever you fancy. This festival starts at around 6 pm and carries on till midnight, leaving your days free for sightseeing. §Traditional Bavarian costumes, song, dance and contests are
part of the revelry, so come prepared to have a good time. If wood- chopping and stone-lifting are your preferred pastimes (especially after glugging beer in large quantities) then this is the place to show off your skills.
As dogged followers of any festivals already trained to love any festivals, especially the kinds set in Europe, food and drinks festivals have a special place in our hearts. These purveyors of general bonhomie and cheer can take any holiday a few notches higher.

The Packing Checklist for a Cruise Holiday
Most cruise liners allow only two checked in bags per person. Make sure you pack
keeping this in mind.
There’s going to be a lot of soaking in the sun and afternoons spent on lounge
chairs, so don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and a hat.
A pair of binoculars is your best friend at sea. How else are you going to spot
dolphins, glaciers and the gorgeous views around you in general?
Keep your nice formals for the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell Receptions.

Hotel Excelsior in Frankfurt was excellent value for money. Extremely convenient location just opposite the Frankfurt Main station, good rooms and extremely hospitable. Many free add ons made the stay quite comfortable.Tea, coffee, fruit cakes and fruits on the house from around 12 Noon till 7pm. The fridge had beer, fruit juice and mineral water free and replenished every day. Hotel Ibis budget in Basel was pretty basic. Extremely small room, very neat and clean. Professionally managed. Hotel Merkur in Interlaken was a good hotel with an extremely convenient location, right opposite to Interlaken West station. Buses running from outside the hotel. Hotel X-tra in Zurich was good. Reasonable location and comfortable stay. Swiss Pass was good to use. It helped us plan and fine tune the trip. No reservations were required in our itinerary.
