JULY GEMS FROM THE TOWN CLERK’S OFFICE
News You Can Use
We are gearing up for the fall elections, because it is never too early to think about
elections. The State Primary Election is scheduled for September 4, 2018. We should
have the Absentee ballots available by the second week of August.
We have exciting news for our voters in Precinct’s One, Ten and Twelve! Precinct
One will no longer vote at the Barnstable West Barnstable School, but will now vote
at the Zion Baptist Church located at 805 Attucks Lane, in Hyannis. Precincts Ten
and Twelve will no longer vote at the Barnstable United Elementary School, but will
now vote at the Seventh Day Adventist Community Building located at 2736
Falmouth Road (Route 28) in Marstons Mills. There are many reasons for these
changes, for instance all of our polling places have to comply with ADA rules, and many parents were
concerned for the safety of the children. Be on the lookout for a postcard with these changes.
If you are a registered voter, hopefully you filled out your census this year because that form is a voter
confirmation certificate as well. By the Federal law you must confirm yearly that you are still at your
residence and you are still qualified to vote from that address.
That is one of the major reasons we send out the census/voter confirmation form. If you don’t return your
census – it is assumed by our Central Voter Registry system that you are not there. Therefore, you can
become inactivated. That means when you go to vote in September and/or November you may have
to show current ID and fill out a form to prove you still live at that address (driver’s licenses are sufficient
for the ID portion). Please call us at 508-862-4044 if you would like to confirm your residency/voter status.
If you have moved, even within the Town of Barnstable, you need to inform the Town Clerk’s office so we
can update your voter information. Remember every vote does count, and we want to count your vote.
Have a great summer,
Ann M. Quirk, CMC/CMMC, Town Clerk 508-862-4044

Summer Greetings!
Even though June brings the end of school for students and teachers,
administrators work year round, closing out the last school year and preparing
for the opening of the new school year. This summer we welcome three new
administrators to our Barnstable District Leadership Team, including:
Beth Forbes, Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School Principal
Mike Wojkowski, Barnstable United Elementary School Principal
Dylan Pauly, School Attorney
Beth Forbes
Beth Forbes started as Principal at Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School ("BWB") on
June 1st. Beth continues to have a successful career in Barnstable Public Schools, first serving as
a kindergarten, first grade and second grade classroom teacher. Building upon her classroom
teaching experience, she became the district’s elementary curriculum leader for four years,
responsible for general leadership in curriculum, instruction, and assessment in grades K-5. Most
recently, she has served as the Assistant Principal at Barnstable United Elementary School. Beth
has a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, and has completed Advanced Graduate
Studies in Educational Leadership and Management. I am confident Beth will bring energetic
and innovative leadership to BWB, with an unwavering focus on student learning and well-
being, while supporting the work and efforts of our BWB teachers.
Mike Wojkowski
Michael Wojkowski has been appointed as the new Principal for Barnstable United Elementary
School ("BUES") . Mike has been with Barnstable Public Schools since 1998 when he started
teaching English at Barnstable High School. In 2010, Mike stepped into the role of English
Language Arts ("ELA") Curriculum Coordinator for grades 6 -12 where his responsibilities included
alignment of the ELA curriculum between the Intermediate School and the High School,
facilitation of professional development to grade 6 -12 ELA staff, and overall support and
supervision of English Department staff at both the High School and the Intermediate
School. Mike holds a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching in English Education through Boston
University. Mike's education and experience will serve him well as he moves into the Principal
role at BUES. He recognizes the importance of students' academic and social-emotional
experience at Barnstable United as they transition from their village elementary schools. Mike is
excited to begin this work in collaboration with the committed staff of Barnstable United.
Dylan Pauly
Dylan has a bachelor’s degree in special education from SUNY-Plattsburgh. After serving as a
special education teacher, Dylan obtained a law degree from the University at Buffalo Law
School, SUNY. She was a public defender and assistant district attorney in Upstate New York,
and then joined a law firm that served the Buffalo, New York, school district and then spent
seven and a half years as counsel in the Madison, Wisconsin, Metro School District. Dylan is
concluding her assignment as an attorney for the public schools in Rochester, New York. She will
join Barnstable Public Schools on July 2, 2018.
I hope everyone is enjoying the worldwide destination vacation location we call home. We are
so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Have a happy and healthy summer!
Warmest wishes,
Meg

2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins
Start of Hurricane Season is a Reminder to Prepare
Developing Your Emergency
Disaster Plan
While Hurricanes can devastate communities, we
have ample warning time with which to enact a
plan to insure the safety of ourselves and our
loved ones.
When developing your disaster plan consider the
following:
1. Where the emergency shelter is in your area.
2. What is your evacuation route.
3. The elevation of your property above mean
sea level.
4. Whether or not you are located in an
evacuation zone. Find out at mass.gov/
knowyourzone
5. If you plan to relocate in the event of a storm,
where exactly do you plan to go? Make
these preparations now and be sure a call to
confirm will not be required as telephone
communication may not be possible.
6. What will you do with your pets during an
emergency? Remember, shelters DO NOT
always allow pets.
7. Know where the emergency shut off is in your
home for electricity, the main panel, and for
water and natural gas.
8. Be sure any / all important documents are
gathered in one place.
9. Prepare your Survival Kit.
The Emergency Survival Kit Should meet the needs of yourself and your family for
at least 72 hours.
Non-perishable packaged or canned foods that
require little or no preparation. Don’t forget a
can opener! (Soup, peanut butter, canned juices,
vegetables, crackers, jelly, trail mix, etc.)
One gallon of water per person per day, extra
for pets. Store water in sterile, plastic containers
such as empty soft drink bottles. Be sure to
change every six months.
A basic first aid kit.
Battery operated radio and flashlight with extra
batteries.
Remember,
in the event of a severe storm:
1. Secure all outdoor objects.
2. Stay away from windows.
3. Fill your tubs and sinks with water to use in your
toilets if necessary.
4. Keep an eye on vulnerable neighbors.
5. If you are asked to evacuate, don’t hesitate to
do so!
The Emergency Shelter Location for the
Town of Barnstable is: Barnstable Intermediate School, 895 Falmouth
Road (Route 28), Hyannis (pets allowed)
Our designated Emergency Alert Radio Station is
