President’s Message
What a Difference a Century Makes
As we enter a new decade it is interesting to compare our lives today
to the lives of our forefathers a century ago.
A century ago:
Life expectancy for men was 47 years
More than 95% of all births took place at home
Only 8% of homes had a telephone
Two out of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from
entering the country for any reason
Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only Marijuana, heroin, and
morphine were all available over the counter at local corner
drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, “Heroin clears the
complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach,
bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!”
I can’t help but marvel at how much better our standard of living is
today and the advancement that continues to be made in technology
and health care. However, the hardship and struggles of mankind
continue.
It would appear we are better off today than we were a century
ago. The real question is “Are we on the right trajectory to ensure
that those who follow us will be better off a century from now and,
more importantly, what foundation are we laying to ensure those who
follow us will be better off?”
