Author: Stephen R. Covey
Presented By: Ramsey Sellers
First, an illustration
PARADIGM SHIFT
• Illustrates how much initial impressions mean
• By only showing one image or the other, I influenced you
• To understand the 7 habits, Covey says we first need a paradigm shift
THE 7 HABITS
• Once this takes place, you can begin to form these 7 special habits towards a better you
• And now, the & habits:
1. BE PROACTIVE• Life Doesn’t just
happen.
• Two Types of People: Proactive and Reactive
• Reactive focus on their “Circle of Concern”
• Proactive focus on their “Circle of Influence”
2. BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
• Everything is Created Twice: Mentally and Physically
• Blueprint and the Building
• Mission Statement: Large and Small
• Your mission Statement makes you the master of your own life
3. PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
• Goes back to “Circle of Influence”
• This is the “physical creation” Habit
• First things are your highest PRIORITIES and being willing to say no to things not of the utmost importance at times
The Time Management Matrix
4. THINK WIN-WIN
• The only one I disagree somewhat with
• Win-Win speaks towards Interdependence
• Not to be confused with Independence, or Dependence
• Requires that we see each other for their worth and not how to beat them
• Says that we should seek mutual benefit in all human Interactions
• We both get a piece of the pie
5. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
• Communication is the MOST important skill in life
• We usually have 4 responses when we listen• Evaluate: agree or disagree
• Probe: question from own reference
• Advise: counsel based on experience
• Interpret: figure the person out
5. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
• If we are constantly breaking down words, we never understand the full message
• Take the words for what they are
• See the message as the person speaking it sees it
6. SYNERGIZE
• Two heads are better than one
• Goes back to interdependence
• Application of previous habits is key
• If everyone thought the same, new innovations would be impossible
• Value each others differences: mental, emotional, and psychological
7. SHARPEN THE SAW
• Habit 7 is the overall wellness habit
• Our most unique and important asset is ourselves
• Four areas of self-renewal• Physical
• Social/ emotional
• Mental
• Spiritual
7. SHARPEN THE SAW
• It is a necessity to set aside time to sharpen these tools
• Physical: Beneficial eating, exercising, and RESTING
• Social/ Emotional: Making Meaningful connections
• Mental: Learning, Reading, Writing, and Teaching
• Spiritual: Taking time to meditate and Pray
AS A RECAP!!
• First comes a paradigm shift
• Then the 7 habits
• All 7 are interdependent, one will not happen without the other
• Its not about mastering them, but working towards them daily
THANK YOU!!!
