THANKSGIVING 2019
Serving with Cadence International
Thankful! This past summer, the goodbyes felt especially difficult. Two families, who were some of our closest friends, and were heavily involved in our lives and ministry, moved back to the States. I entered the summer wondering if we would start the fall with no one in our youth group because it seemed like all the students were leaving.
And yet, here we are, in mid-October, thankful for the work God has called us to. On October 15, Amy and I completed our fifth year of life in Okinawa, Japan! While five years does not sound that long, it feels like a lifetime ago when we were headed to the airport with suitcases and one-way tickets in our hands. Especially with Thanksgiving coming, we have been reflecting on God’s faithfulness over the last five years.
One of the biggest challenges of ministry to the military is saying goodbye as families move to their next duty station. Every summer we wonder what will happen as key members of our ministries leave. Every summer we grieve the loss of close friends, volunteers, and students. Every summer we face discouragement as the hard work of building relationships, making connections, and discipling starts all over.
And yet, every summer, God is faithful to provide new families and new friends to serve alongside as we share the gospel and our lives. Already this fall, we have felt a reinvigoration of the chapel we attend with a new chaplain bringing fresh energy and excitement! Our youth groups have been replenished as new students keep coming each week.
Despite the grief of constant goodbyes, God continues to be faithful year in and year out! As we reflect on five years of life and ministry, we see evidence of His hand touching

our lives in so many ways. He has generously provided for us financially through your faithful support. We are encouraged by numerous new friendships that will last into eternity. He has blessed us with teammates who have walked with us through life—in both the joys and the tears. He has taken us on a crazy and beautiful journey into His love for us as individuals and, now, as a family!
Akira continues to be our greatest joy! Akira, in Japanese, means bright and he has more than lived up to his name. He is now 19 months old, has been walking for over half of his life, and already has an impressive vocabulary. We are excited for Baby Fook #2 to arrive in late January as well! Aki will be thrilled to have a little sibling and playmate and will be an amazing big brother!
While the goodbyes are difficult, the discouragement is often overbearing, and the tears come freely, God is faithful, and we are thankful!
Thank you for your continued prayers, encouragement, and support!Kenji, Amy, Akira, Baby Fook!
