We’re pretty happy people, but ...

In 2013, we started to feel anxious, a little too attached to our phones.

We realized we took them everywhere.

And it felt bad being always available.

So we sought out an experience where there was no tech. Pholia Farm in Oregon to be specific.

Our phones didn’t work there. At first we were anxious.

And then, we started to relax. And talk. And read books. And enjoy nature.

And make friends with a goat.

And another goat.

And yet another goat.

Ok.

We befriended all of the goats.

We even went on a hike with them.

It was wonderful.

The experience got us thinking about how much we miss out on, when we’re always connected to tech.

And that it is necessary to do tech detoxes in a variety of ways to reconnect with life and the ones you love.

We’ve been studying tech detox TOURISM, CULTURES and TRENDS for the past three years.

We’d like to share with the SXSW communitiy what we’ve learned.

The average American adult spends 11 hours a day interacting with electronic media. That’s almost 46% of our time, whether we’re awake or not.

- Nielsen

84% of Americans own a computer. This easy access has us spending around 60 hours a month (2.5 full days) interacting with technology.

- U.S. Census

24% of teenagers in America are almost constantly online, with 92% going online daily and 56% accessing the internet several times a day.

- Pew

We’re VERY Connected

One in eight Americans suffers from problematic Internet use.

Food for Thought

Campers have paid up to $570 to have their devices taken away from them for a weekend. via Forbes

From detox spa packages, tech-free vibes or highly disconnected sites - hotels to home rentals are popping up globally marketed as a tech-free or limited tech experience.

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT®

Brands are emerging in the tech detox space such as “Digital Detox”.

The Amish do not consider technology evil in itself but they believe that technology, if left untamed, will undermine worthy traditions and accelerate assimilation into the surrounding society.
