Transcript of Sutures ( stitches )

Surgical suture is a medical

device used to hold body tissues together after an injury or

surgery. Application generally involves using a needle with

an attached length of thread. A number of different

shapes, sizes, and thread materials.

1. Easy to handle2. Have minimally reaction in tissue3. Inhibits bacterial growth4. Holds securely when knotted5. Resist shrinking in tissue6. Is no capillary, no allergenic, no carcinogenic 7. Absorbs with minimal reaction after tissue has healed

NOTE: Such an ideal suture does not exist.

Surgical catgut are of 2 types:1. Plain surgical gut / type A2. Treated surgical gut / type C

• Plain surgical or

untreated surgical

gut or type A

• Treated surgical gut or type C

• Unable to retain

tensile strength just for

7days

• Able to retain its tensile

strength for about 10-14days

• Multifilament • Multifilament

Silk suture is an important non-absorbable and multifilament in nature.

Raw silk is produced by a silkworm larva's cocoon.

Although silk suture is a non-absorbable suture, it loses most of its tensile strength in one year, and is completely absorbed in 2 years. Thus, Silk behaves like a very slow absorbing suture.

Silk suture is dyed black for easier visibility in tissue.

Its handling is easy and can tolerated by body tissues.

Consisted of natural twisted silk encased in an insoluble coating of tanned gelatine or other protein.

It can undergo autoclaving to prevent the ingrowth of tissue cell which may interfere with its removal after use as dermal suture.

Its non absorbable Synthetic Multifilament.

Tensile strength is superior to that braided silk , nylon.

They are the suture of choice its because

they remain in contact with water and

body fluid unlike polypropylene and

stainless steel

They are coated with polytetrafluoroethylene , silicon resin ,

polybutilate

They also impregnated with non toxic

lubricants in order to exhibits smoother

surface ,easy handling and easier passage

thru tissue.

Surgical needle:

1.Eyed Needle: Those that have the hole at the suture side of the needle and that need to be threaded with suture are “eyed”

2.Eyeless Needle:

Those that have the suture crimped within the needle are “eyeless” or “swaged.”

Surgical Stapling Devices:

Ligating Clamps And Clips:
