INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

What is Learn4Work? • Programme aimed to improve

vocational education in Africa. By linking African and Dutch (business) organizations, schools and people.

• Makes a positive contribution to: – the number of young people who

can learn a trade; – the quality of vocational training; – better alignment with and flow-

through to the job market.

• Vocational training is the basis for finding work or starting a business amongst the illiterate and semi-illiterate Pastoralists.

• Work offers young people more opportunities to improve their income, raise their standard of living and become independent.

• Learn4Work is co-funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

• Vision and mission: stimulate youth employment

• 3 Key strategies: – Formation of Private–public

PARTNERSHIPS IN REALIZING SUSTAINABLE PASTORALIST DEVELOPMENT

WHY PARTNERSHIPS • These communities live in areas

that are arid or semi-arid with low precipitation and erratic rainfall

• Traditionally depend on the common property resources consisting of pasture, water and mineral licks

• Pastoralists are confronted with many natural as well as man-made problems
