Junior Librarian is an interactive, school wide, multi-platform
software package allowing greater access to books, including
ebooks from anywhere, anytime to further engage children
with the wider curriculum whilst maintaining a high level of on
screen interactivity involving parents, teachers and pupils alike.
Junior Librarian & how it supports the
National Curriculum English Programmes
of Study for Primary Schools
Paired with your current school enrolment package, Junior Librarian
allows you to build an intelligent reading profile for the children in
your school, be that individually or collectively per group. Given the
expected Ofsted inspection criteria, the ability to track, report and
indentify key reading trends in your school will prove invaluable.
Junior Librarian allows the seamless circulation of school
library books using a barcode scanner. Upon returning books,
children’s literacy skills are developed further by Junior
Librarian offering them the unique opportunity to write their
own personal review of the book. Both of these features are fun
and leave children feeling empowered at the same time! Even
the youngest children can easily write reviews about the books
they have enjoyed reading at school or at home by using
Junior Librarian’s Review template, which can be altered to
add or remove questions to suit the needs of the children by
the teacher or librarian.
This could be used with a group in the library, or with a class
as part of a composition lesson to help develop vocabulary,
spelling & punctuation skills. Writing reviews also helps pupils
demonstrate their understanding of the themes and content
of a text and provokes discussion.
Video reviews can also be created to develop oral and performance
skills using the free iMLS app for smartphones and tablets. These
can then be watched by a wide audience, anytime, at home or at
school.
Writing Reviews & sharing opinions about their Reading
Pupils should be taught to read fluently, understand extended prose both fiction and nonfiction and be encouraged to read for pleasure. Schools should do everything to promote wider reading. They should provide library facilities and set ambitious expectations for reading at home.
Pupils should develop a capacity to explain their understanding of books and other reading, and
to prepare their ideas before they write
“
Pupils should continue to have opportunities to write for a range of real purposes and audiences as part of their work across the curriculum
Developing Research & Information Retrieval Skills
Using Junior Librarian’s catalogue Search & Enquiry functions
encourages children to independently search for books and
develops their information seeking skills. Junior Librarian
offers an interactive learning journey to children, helping them
to discover and engage independently via a variety of tools.
There are search methods to suit all ages & abilities; searching
pictorially, by A-Z search of author, theme, series, genre, level
or by subject. Lessons can be planned around exploring these
functions, constructing keywords or by dewey classification.
Upon finding a book of interest, childrens interest can be
further engaged via thousands of approved, safe websites
which link to each book where keywords match.
Book records contain the front cover book image, ‘Meet The
Author’ videos, a detailed summary about the book content
and further information about each resource including chapter
extracts, reviews & linked items which can help pupils extend their
knowledge & determine their future reading choices.
Pupils can upload their own stories, poems and projects. These
can be shared to the library catalogue in a variety of formats
which again could form the basis of a literacy lesson. By becoming
confident users of the Search & Enquiry features, pupils acquire
the transferrable skills of locating & scanning resources, creating &
filtering reading lists & of structuring their time within the library to
achieve their goals.
Highlighting & Recommending Books to Readers
Developing their vocabulary and the breadth and depth of their reading, making sure that they become independent, fluent and enthusiastic readers who read widely and frequently. They should be developing their understanding and enjoyment of stories, poetry, plays and nonfiction, and learning to read silently. They should also be developing their knowledge and skills in reading nonfiction about a wide range of subjects
Junior Librarian provides many ways of promoting reading
for pleasure & purpose that will attract even the most reluctant
readers, all of which can be accessed at any time by the school
community in a variety of ways including by using our iMLS
app. New Books in the Library & The Most Popular Books
features showcase the latest & most popular resources in your
library. A Book of the Week recommendation can be set in
advance by the teacher or librarian, ideal to promote a key title
during a book week or author event.
Integrating the OverDrive eBook library enables schools to
provide a blended approach to reading for enjoyment through
a combination of physical books and eBooks. Something to
suit every reader.
Pupils should have opportunities to exercise choice in selecting books and be taught how to do so
Junior Librarian Video Guide for Pupils
To help pupils of all abilities discover all that Junior Librarian has to offer & become
confident library users, we have produced a video guide available to view within our
online video tutorials library. This guide can also be used as part of a library lesson or for
a parents evening.
The ‘Behind the Bookshelf’ & ‘Meet the Author’ videos feature a wealth of
well known authors such as Malorie Blackman and David Almond
talking about the craft & process of writing, they read extracts
on screen and give an insight into the books they have
written, the plots & character development. This
content provides excellent source material to
provoke discussion & debate whilst also being an
effective stimulus for creative writing.
Highlighting & Recommending Books to Readers
Junior Librarian can be configured so that all navigational
tabs appear in a range of different languages including
French, German & Polish which could be used to help develop
children’s awareness of other spoken languages & how they
are structured.

Monitoring & Reporting Pupils Reading Progression
All quotes are taken from the English Programmes of Study: Key Stages 1 and 2 National Curriculum in England - Department for Education Sept 2013
Too few schools gave enough thought to ways of encouraging the love of reading, and a sizeable minority of pupils failed to reach national expectations in reading
