Superior Performance of a New Inorganic

Photocatalytic Coating Composition.

Industrial and exhaust exhalations, organic contaminants from plastics and many other substances

around us are threat to human health and they lower the quality of our environment. According to

the WTO, more than 15% of chronic diseases are caused by bad air quality. A high percentage of

allergies, contagious infections, bad odors or darkening of facades are a few examples of the

impacts of contaminated air. Man is forced to protect himself and one exciting possibility is the use

of photocatalytic coatings.

Photocatalytic paints based on TiO2 are commonly seen on the market now, however; their

declared photocatalytic activity may vary. Their photocatalytic efficiency is often merely symbolic

due to the binders blocking the TiO2 surface in the paint composition.

This is mainly true for all silicon and silicate based binders which cover the TiO2 nanoparticles

almost completely eliminating the photocatalytic effect.

Advanced Materials-JTJ, found and patented a binder that does not block the photocatalytic

activity. In fact the binder is covered by the TiO2 nanoparticles allowing a direct contact of gas

with the TiO2 photoactive surface.

In contrast to the organics or inorganic silicone and silicate binders covering the TiO2 surface,

particles of the said binder are covered by nano-TiO2. The composition is created by a reaction of

inorganic agents in the presence of TiO2 nano particles.

As a result the photocatalytic activity of this product is orders of magnitude higher compared to

photocatalytic paints.

This brings a new value in use to these coatings, because they qualify as an air cleaning system.

Air cleaning, antimicrobial properties and field studies will be demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

MECHANISM – CONVERSION OF LIGHT ENERGY

INTO AN OXIDATION POTENTIAL ON THE

SURFACE OF TITANIUM DIOXIDE

ORGANICS

(SMOKE, MICROBES, VAPOUR, ETC) + AIR OXYGEN

TiO2 SURFACE +

+ LIGHT H2O + CO2

Eg ~ 3.2eV

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Regular paint

When smoke comes

into contact with

the photocatalytic

surface, it reacts

with the oxygen

(burns) creating

molecules of water,

CO2 and other

mineral

compounds. 6 months

Smoke and oxygen co-exists in the air without any problem.

Smoke creates musty deposits on a regular wall.

• The active compound in FN1® and FN2® is photoactive titanium

dioxide (TiO2), which is a common pigment We can find it just about

everywhere (paper, paints, plastics, whipped cream, bread). TiO2 does

not represent any health risk.

• The photocatalytic layer is pH neutral and non-irritating

• Ecologically friendly
