DEAR INSTRUCTORS,As part of our mission to Grow, Give, and Teach, the Generous Garden Project offers interactive field trips for grades K-12. Our custom-designed curriculum includes programs developed by a certified environmental science teacher.

Our programs are based in the SC Science Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards 2013 Draft. We look forward to welcoming your student group to the garden, where we strive to nourish hungry bodies as well as hungry minds.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Cost: $7 per studentFREE for teachers and chaperones*student scholarships available based on need

Duration: 3 hours (not including lunch/snack)

Group Size: 10-30 students

PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP

School should provide:

• First aid kit• Chaperone (parent/teacher) for every 8 students

Students should bring:

• Snack/lunch• Weather- and garden-appropriate clothing and shoes

Generous Garden Project will provide:

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS

KINDERGARTEN

Standards: K-1.1, K-1.2, K-2.1, K-2.5

On this field trip, students have the opportunity to explore life cycles hands-on. We will first observe a seed, opening the discussion to the life cycle of plants.

Then, students participate in guided exploration of the garden, where we practice service and learn about hunger. Each student will plant his or her own seed to take home and grow.

GRADE 1Standards: 1-2.1, 1-2.2,1-2.3, 1-4.1, 1-4.3, 1-4.6

Students embark on a garden scavenger hunt to illustrate the major structures of plants. Together, we will identify edible structures of plants throughout the garden. Students will practice service as they experience soil hands-on. We will compare soil samples as each student prepares his or her own flower pot to take home.

GRADE 2

Standards: 2-1.3, 2-1.4, 2-2.2, 2-2.4

Students explore during a garden scavenger hunt in which we will observe and classify animals according to their physical characteristics.

Students learn the interdependence between plants and animals. We will compare soil samples as each student prepares his or her own flower pot to take home.

GRADE 3Standards: 3-2.1, 3-2.3, 3-2.5

Students explore the garden and organize a simple food chain of producers, consumers, and decomposers. Students practice serving others as they experience soil hands-on. Each student plants a seed in a Generous Garden pot to take home, and discuss which components their plants will need as part of their habitats. Like all field trips at the Generous Garden Project, students will share reflections before they leave.

GRADE 4Standards: 4-1.4, 4-2.1

Students observe and classify organisms throughout the Generous Garden. We will distinguish between vertebrates and invertebrates, plants and animals, and flowering and nonflowering plants. Students practice service as we experience the garden hands-on, and will each plant a seed to take home.

GRADE 5

Standards: 5-2.4, 5-2.5

Students identify the roles of organisms in an ecosystem’s food webs as they classify organisms in the garden as examples of each of the kingdoms of living organisms. Students participate in a service activity, plant seeds to take home, and reflect as a group before the end of the trip.
