String Quartet No. 2
R. David Salvage
String Quartet No. 2 (2007)
This String Quartet may be performed by any combination of violins, violas, and cellos, as long as there is only one instrument on each part and all four parts are performed. Thus an ensemble of, say, four violas will be just as suitable for the work as the traditional string quartet set-up. The score is notated in treble clef, and three sets of parts – in treble, alto, and bass clefs – exist from which ensembles may choose.
Some elaboration of certain markings in the score is necessary.
“Ad lib” applies to only certain elements. Where “ad lib register” is written, players are to chose the register in which pitches are played and when to change this register. Where “ad lib omit notes” is written, players chose to omit notes as they see fit. In such sections, players may perform more or less continuously or infrequently.
In sections 1-3, technical specifications follow each instance of “ad lib.” For example, the marking “Ad lib register: col legno, poco pizz” means players must confine their playing to col legno and pizz techniques until the next similar marking. Any kind of pizzicato may be used in such sections. The term “poco” means to subordinate the technique it modifies to the other technique. In this instance, col legno should be more prominent than pizzicato. “Poco omit notes” means to omit fewer notes than one does in sections marked “omit notes.”
Sections 4 and 5 contain some features not found in the other sections. Both sections 4 and 5 contain bracketed, stem-less notes marked “ad lib register” These notes are significantly longer than the steady eighths that comprise the first three sections, but specific duration is up to the performers. While registration of these bracketed notes is entirely up to the players, players may not omit any of the enclosed notes. Bracketed groups are repeated until the player with the ostinato cues the next bracketed group. Players should not feel pressured to complete subsequent iterations after the bracketed group has been played in its entirety once. Dynamics apply to individual bracketed groups. Players should make no attempt to rhythmically align their bracketed notes with those in other instruments. Tremolos in these sections are unmeasured. (The ones in section 7 are measured doubles.) Harmonics may be used in sections 4 and 5 at players’ discretion.
The marking “tap” signals players to tap with their fingertips the body of their instrument. It is assumed players will accommodate page turns through omitting notes.
