Strategy for

Advanced Multiplication

Nadine Gilkison

Upon completion of this exercise, you will:

• Learn the definition of lattice and the lattice method of solving a multiplication problem

• Learn some history of lattice multiplication • Learn procedures for a 2 by 2 lattice • Line up digits in the proper place value before adding the sub products to find the correct answer

• Practice some lattice style multiplication problems

Lattice is a method of multiplication that will work for all multiplication problems! A lattice keeps your numbers organized.

The Lattice Form of Multiplication dates back to the 1200’s or before in Europe. It gets its name from the fact that to do the multiplication you fill in a grid which resembles a lattice one might find ivy growing on.

As you get ready to learn this process remember to:

•Think positive

•Try your personal best

•Have an open mind ready for learning

First, we will draw a box similar to the one that will appear next.

Next, divide the box into four equal parts.

Now, divide each small box diagonally from the top right to the bottom left.

You are now ready to place the numbers for your problem. Let’s

practice with the problem 23 X 37. Watch to see where the numbers

should be placed.

multiply.

• Begin by placing the product of 2 X 3 within the grid as shown.

(click mouse 4 times)

• Now do the same process for 3 X 3
