AUGUST 2015 NEWSLETTER
Programs funded in part by the Dept. For The Aging
The Dog Days of Summer, 2015
To those of you who have been coming to Stein since the days of ICD on East 24th Street, do you remember that we
had no Air Conditioning in the summer? It never worked! I am grateful that we have cool air here. We are a City
Cooling Center, so we will be open until 6pm on those days that are specified as too hot to be un-air conditioned.
We just started our new fiscal year and looking at the figures, I wanted to report that we didn’t meet our
expected lunch contribution, which is over $42,000 in the budget. The NYC Dept. for the Aging requires us to collect
that amount towards our food costs and we were $7,000 under that amount. I say this because I want you to know
that the food we serve does not come without cost. We certainly don’t suggest that you contribute to the cost of
your lunch if you cannot afford to, but if you can, we need you to help out.
I know we have been discussing the menu and quality of the lunches and we take your suggestions seriously.
Thank you for participating in our surveys so that we know what is preferred and what should be discontinued. We
are also circulating a survey about day trip ideas and plan to set up some trips over the next few months.
I want to thank Barbara Green, the seamstress who has volunteered to mend our rips and tears once a month.
She had her first session in July and will be coming back on Thursday, August 13th from 1-3pm. Please limit the
number of items so others will have a chance to have their clothes mended. Please thank her for her time and skill
with a sewing machine.
After the enthusiastic response to the possibility of a Zumba Class, our teacher, Chintamani (also known as “C”)
will be starting a Zumba Class on Tuesday, August 4th from 1:30 -2:30. If you signed up for the class, please help
support it by attending. I also have to mention the wonderful “Lunchercise” led by our own Angel every day. I love
seeing everyone moving, dancing and smiling every time the music starts.
Another new group starting in September is about voice and breathing resulting in singing! Birdie Rutkin, will
work with 8-10 people starting on Thursday, September 24th from 1:30 to 2:30pm. Since we have a growing chorus
and singing is so healthy for us and fun to do, if you are interested, please sign up for the class since space is limited.
On Wednesdays, Sarita teaches beading and has developed a good following. The group meets after lunch at 1:30.
Stay tuned for other new programs and our long-time favorites here at Stein. Stay Cool.
Jane Barry, Executive Director
Within every lifetime there are events so special they merit a lasting remembrance. The Stein Senior Center TREE OF LIFE offers you a unique opportunity to perpetuate the memory of those
moments: a wedding, graduation, anniversary, birth, honor, or any other personal or family happening. The TREE OF LIFE is a beautiful sculpture adorned with 175 leaves, apples, doves and stones at its base.
The Tree of Life is a most gratifying way to permanently record a special personal or family event.
