Stark County was formed in 1839 out of Knox and Putnam

Counties. It was named for General John Stark, (August 28, 1728 –

May 8, 1822) who served in the American Conti-

nental Army during the American Revolutionary

War. He became widely known as the "Hero of

Bennington" for his exemplary service at the Battle

of Bennington in 1777. The distance, swamp ground

and uncertainty of the ferry being able to cross the high waters of

the Illinois River to reach Hennepin (County seat for Putnam Coun-

ty), made the formation necessary. At the time of its founding, Stark

County had about 1000 inhabitants, which was considerable, since

just ten years before, Isaac B. Essex had built the first log cabin in the

area. Plentiful deer, wild turkey, suitable lumber for fuel and build-

ings, good farming prospects, friendly Indians and adequate creeks

and rivers for mills, all contributed to the early migration. In the mid

1860s and continuing for more than 40 years, passenger and freight

trains operated between Peoria and Rock Island. By 1915, rail traffic

had begun to decline, and by 1950, ceased completely. Peoria’s Forest

Foundation acquired the abandon railway corridor and in 1969 deeded

the property to the Department of Conservation. Officially dedicated

in 1989, the Rock Island Trail State Park was the first railway conver-

sion project completed by the department. Please enjoy our home,

Stark County during this years Fall Festival Drive.
