ST MICHAEL’S, AND ALL SAINTS, HIGHGATE
July/August 2014
Parish Magazine
From the vicar and priest- in-charge
I n the last issue, I thanked Susan McFadden for all her expertise and hard work as editor of this Maga-zine. Now (for this issue at least), I am acting as a
temporary fill-in, and therefore I have a much clearer idea of all the work she put in. So a sincere thank you, Susan, once again! We’ll need to find a new editor as soon as possible, but before we set about inviting volunteers, we have decided to reassess the design of the magazine, its purpose and its content, so that we can agree a clear brief with him or her. Those of you who’ve already acquired a copy of Roger Sainsbury’s excellent history of the parish will know how much useful—and often very colourful—material he found in old copies of the St Michael’s magazine to help him in his research.. In the vestry at All Saints there is a full collection of bound previous parish magazine issues, into which I have dipped on several occasions, mostly at random, so I know the same thing applies in both parish-es. These documents are of enormous interest to local historians, and it is very good for us clergy to see where we as parishes have come from, and to be reminded that some of the issues we are grappling with in the 2010’s are by no means entirely new. In particular it is inter-esting and instructive for any incumbent to read the ex-hortations, opinions and observations of his predeces-sors. I can’t help wondering whether what (if anything!) they might find of in interest in my own ramblings if they read them in 2114.. I also wonder whether they had the advantage of living in a much more leisured age. But the central purpose of our magazine can’t be to pro-vide material for future local archivists. A change of edi-tor ought to be a time to reconsider just what sort of publication we need, especially given our increasing reli-ance on websites, the social media, and electronic sources of information in general.. So, please see the questionnaire printed elsewhere in this magazine, and complete it, either on paper, or via either of the parish websites. We’d be grateful to know what you value in the magazine, what you tend to skim over,
and what, if anything, you find missing. Likewise, it would be very useful to have your views on the St Michael's and All Saints websites. And of course—if there is a potential volunteer editor (or more than one) reading these words it would be good to know. Please don’t hang back!
O ne or two people have heard me refer in sermons to a couple of books both written from the per-spective of a grieving parent, albeit with rather
different approaches. But they would I think be useful for any Christian person facing bereavement, or seeking to be a good friend to someone else who faces it. They are:
Lament for a Son , Nicholas P. Wolterstorff
When Heaven Is Silent: Trusting God When Life Hurts , Ronald Dunn
Jonathan Trigg

This summer we have launched Messy Church in a bliz-
zard of activity, excitement and food. We have had
tremendous fun, learned about Jesus in umpteen differ-
ent ways and enjoyed the company of many friends
over dinner. As we come towards the end of our trial
run, we look back at some wonderfully successful ses-
sions.
When we first thought
about Messy Church –
in the distant days of
last January – we were
hugely unsure about
what it would involve.
And as our first session
came closer, questions
and uncertainty still
dominated. After
setting up the church
in the afternoon of
Sunday 4 May, we
anxiously peered out
of the doors: it was a
sunny bank holiday
weekend – would any-
one come? Thankfully
they did, and we had a
lovely afternoon think-
ing about Holy Week
and Easter. Over two
sessions (I’m writing
before the third) at
least 70 people have
come to or helped at
Messy Church. A complete spread of ages, families, and
people from all parts of the church community.
Every Messy Church starts with around 50 minutes of
activity stations: people flowing freely between them
and encountering today’s story in practical and spiritual
ways. At Easter we made Easter gardens, and baked hot
cross buns; we placed palm leaves on the road to Jeru-
salem and played a Holy Week computer game; we
made Easter decorations, and read the story with props
and drama. At Pentecost we decorated (church) birth-
day cakes and flew paper aeroplanes; we made banners
and fiery headdresses; we made windmills and thought
about the Holy Spirit as water.
MESSY CHURCH COMES TO HIGHGATE
After this smorgasbord of activity comes our celebra-
tion time – around 15 minutes of collective prayer,
worship and singing – before we all tuck in to dinner.
Sausages and mashed potato have been universally
popular, topped only by the giant and delicious cake
that follows!
Messy Church is
made by the
huge numbers of
people who help
at each session:
who have joined
us in this ven-
ture, and have
offered so much.
We need to rec-
ognise the es-
sential contribu-
tion made by so
many people,
and in particular
the steering
group of Anne
Casson, Veronica
Sanderson, Kitty
Sage and James
Yeates. It is the
courage of the
PCC and all these
people that have
got us this far,
and we can be
honoured and
excited at all that Jesus is doing.
The autumn will bring new challenges and opportuni-
ties, but for now – it is surely time for the summer holi-
days!

All Saints’ Songs of Praise – Sunday 8th June 2014
The votes were cast and tallied. The order of service was prepared. And the Songs of Praise were sung. The evening of Sunday 8th
June ended up being a wonderful one of singing, praying and reflection upon some of our favourite hymns. Thank you to everyone
for voting and attending. If you were there or unable to make it, you can still purchase commemorative editions of the service on our
website which include the full readings, prayers, hymn texts and meditations (prepared by Revd’s Jonathan and Bryce). Below, find
the full record of votes cast:

GOOD COMMUNICATION?
Good communication is essential to the life of the Church—after all, we believe that in the good news of Jesus
Christ we have a truth to convey that is life-transforming. But recently we have been thinking about the quality of
the way we communicate within our community as well as beyond it. Does our Parish Magazine give you the infor-
mation you need? How could it be improved? What else would you like to see in it? Do you visit the parish web-
sites? Do you find them useful? Again, what do you value, and what do you think is missing.
It would help us enormously if as many people as possible in both parishes completed this survey—anonymously!
Either cut out this page and return it to church, or complete the for online via either of the parish websites.
Do you read the magazine: IN PAPER FORM? ONLINE? BOTH?

O nce again there was tremendous support for the ‘Fair in the Square’ from the community of St. Michael's Church. We played host to many events on our fore-
court including a vegetable display (designed in part by pupils of St. Michael's School) and of course the incredible dancing sheep show.
Inside the church there was plenty to draw in visitors. Many people remarked on what a fantastic building we had and there was a team on hand to tell them all about it and of course what goes on inside it! Some of the visitors were lucky enough to get a sample of our worship amongst other musical numbers with a fantastic performance from the Parish Choir. We were also very grateful to those who served refreshments, donated cakes and helped to man the Tower Tours.
All in all we raise over a thousand pounds for the church and had the privilege of introducing hundreds of new visitors to our place of worship. Well done and a sincere thank you to all those who took part!
