The St. Matthews Area Business Association

(SMABA) is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. With almost

400 members, we are the largest business association in the Louisville metro area and are an important part of the business life of our community — a powerful and effective business ally full of resources, opportunities and synergy.

Fifty years ago, 12 businesses saw the need to form an organization to develop, promote and protect businesses just like yours. Today, we continue those efforts by delivering greater benefits than ever before for members, plus anyone who lives, works, plays or shops in the St. Matthews area.

SMABA members are entitled to monthly newsletters, a membership ros-ter, a free Web page, advertising co-ops, networking, and educational and motiva-tional seminars. 50th Anniversary50th Anniversary

St. Matthews is located in Jefferson County,

Kentucky’s largest county, and is named for a local

Episcopal church. First established in 1851, the community was incor-porated in 1950. In its early years, St. Matthews was mostly farmland, with potatoes as the principal cash crop. St. Matthews dominated the market by producing enough potatoes to supply mar-kets in both northern and southern states.

At that early time, most Jefferson County residents lived in Louisville, the desired spot for business because of its close prox-imity to the Ohio River. But as Louisville became congested, many people moved to the nearby community of St. Matthews, an easy buggy ride down U.S. Highway 60, which bisects Kentucky and continues to

provide easy access to downtown Louisville, Interstate highways and other nearby com-munities. St Matthews’ residents avoid the hustle and bustle of a big city while enjoy-ing the peace and tranquil atmosphere of country living.

Understanding the significant impact that historical preservation has on the future of a community, St. Matthews’ resi-dents recently set their sights on reinvent-ing the vintage Vogue Theater, located on Lexington Road. When the Vogue Theater opened in 1939, ticket prices were 16 cents per movie. The theater closed its doors in September 1998. Through recla-mation efforts, this historic theater build-ing will soon house offices instead of movie screens. Relit and refurbished, the original classic Vogue marquee will soon shine in all its original glory.

History & Culture

St. Matthews continues to grow its business and

industry. From its beginnings as a major potato producer,

St. Matthews’ business and industry devel-oped into the thriving community of small businesses, important educational facili-ties, and a significant retail and industrial presence. Initial growth was spurred by the area’s rural landscape and close proximity to the railroad, which allowed farmers to easily transport potatoes and other agricultural goods to local and national markets. Kentucky’s horse industry also helped grow the community.

Numerous businesses cater to the St. Matthews community. A majority of them

are still run by the families who founded them — families who carry on the tradition that has made St. Matthews the family-friendly community it is today. Visitors and residents appreciate easy access to service stations, hardware stores, drug stores and dry cleaners — all located on or around Shelbyville Road. Local business owners take pride in upholding the values and traditions of their forefathers. Responding to market trends, the bread-and-butter businesses of St. Matthews continue to grow and provide a quality of service that enhances the beauty of our small town.

Mall St. Matthews is the largest mall in Kentucky with more than 25 anchor stores and new stores continually being added.

The mall offers a wide variety of stores for shoppers, including Williams-Sonoma, Aeropostale, Brooks Brothers, JCPenney, Ann Taylor and the Pottery Barn. The mall, located on U.S. Highway 60, continues to expand the job market for St. Matthews residents.

Louisville has been called a city for those who enjoy fine dining, and St. Matthews is certainly a hot spot for dining as well, whether it be a candle-light dinner or a drive-through meal. So whether you crave buffalo wings, barbe-cued ribs, pizza, perfectly cooked steak, or hot or cold sandwiches, you’ll find it all in beautiful, affordable St. Matthews.

Business & Industry

St. Matthews’ government works side by side with res-

idents to strengthen the com-munity. The city is governed by

a Commission consisting of a mayor and eight council members. Regular meetings are held at City Hall on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m.; the public is always encouraged to attend and participate.

The St. Matthews Police Department is dedicated to serving the city. Established in 1955, the police department is a well-trained group of men and women that has received its due appreciation in the state of Kentucky. Patrolling the neighbor-hoods, as well as patrolling the malls and business areas on foot, enables the police force to “protect and serve” at a high stan-dard. Whether they are answering calls or patrolling the area, these officers are well equipped to perform their duties with the utmost dedication to providing a safe haven for the people of St. Matthews.

The St. Matthews Fire Protection District serves nearly 40,000 residents in

the city and surrounding area. The district has two fire stations made up of nearly 35 career firefighters and 25 volunteers. Fire equipment includes four engines fully equipped for rescue, a 100-foot tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck, and a fan truck equipped to handle fires at malls, hospitals and other tall buildings. With a dependable staff and volunteers, the team has a speedy response time during emergencies. The Fire Protection District also lends support to the St. Matthews festivals. Along with sponsoring the festival, the Fire Protection district also brings a fire truck and smoke house to educate children about the dangers of fire. The St. Matthews Police Department also assists through sponsorship and provid-ing children with ID cards.

Because of the easily accessible water supply in the area, fire-insurance rates are low in Jefferson County and St. Matthews — yet another enticing reason to live and work in St. Matthews.

Government & Services

St. Matthews and its sur-rounding communities

continue to grow and expand. The growth of Jefferson County

has allowed these areas to prosper while maintaining an ability to hold on to tradi-tions. The community’s focus on family values — a focus that holds St. Matthews together — entices people to make St. Matthews their home. Due to a continued population growth of 3 percent in recent years, major roadways are being widened to five lanes to accommodate increasing traf-fic needs. St. Matthews incorporates about 4.03 square miles with a total population of 15,852. The majority of the population is between the ages of 35 and 44. The average income is $40,000 per year for a single per-son and $56,000 per year for a family.

St. Matthews offers a wide variety of housing choices from cozy studio-type apart-ments to spacious five-bedroom homes. Home prices range from $80,000 up to $2 million. Condominium and townhouse

prices range from $100,000 to $450,000. So, whether you are purchasing your first home or are looking to expand or perhaps down-size your mode of living, there are proper-ties to fit your lifestyle and your budget in St. Matthews. However, if owning a home is not in your immediate plans, an array of luxury rental apartments are available with average monthly rental costs of $600 and amenities to suit everyone.

Masonic Home Village Apartments, an independent-living residency, has increased its capacity in keeping with an aging national population trend. Residence was initially offered solely to the elderly with disabilities, but Masonic Homes now has the ability to accommodate down-sizing seniors and retirees seeking the convenience and comfort of a home environment, as well as those needing assistance in caring for themselves. St. Matthews offers two Masonic Homes with similar qualities with the combined capac-ity to house more than 100 residents.

A skilled nursing staff is available to assist residents with medical needs and individu-alized round-the-clock care where needed, while programs and activities promote a community environment.

The St. Matthews Community Center is the perfect meeting place for residents and visitors alike. For example, many families enjoy the Babe Ruth Little League Baseball program held at the center. Little League helps youngsters learn skills, teamwork and the fun of America’s favorite pastime. Community volunteers and Little League staff members not only teach the basics of the game of baseball, but also work to instill the joy of the game by making it a fun activity where teamwork is the focus.

Many parks dot the landscape in and around St. Matthews, offering walking trails, outdoor recreation and space for exercise. Parks are strategically located throughout the community and are wonderful places for family outings, group gatherings, picnics or just enjoying nature at its best.

Quality of Life & Homes

With an outstanding edu-cational system, the St.

Matthews community contin-ues to develop leaders for a

new generation. Education is a top prior-ity and students are ensured the essential tools and programs they will need to succeed at a higher level. Whether attend-ing public, private or parochial schools, students receive excellent education here in St. Matthews.

In November 2004, St. Matthews Elementary School was recognized by the National PTA as a Parent Involvement School of Excellence. Dedicated educators and staff work with parents to prepare each student for a bright future.

Waggener Traditional High School, just like its name, “traditional,” provides students with a well-organized structure where suc-cess in school and education can thrive. The school’s engineering program was rated as one of the best by the International Technology Education Association Conference. Small in size, Waggener is big on ensuring that students excel in their academic growth. In a joint endeavor, these two schools founded Schools Together Embracing Parents and Students (S.T.E.P.S Center), a program that teaches parents and students to be successful not only in the community, but also in life.

Private schools in St. Matthews get both students and parents involved with

education by giving parents the opportu-nity to participate in their child’s academ-ics, educational excellence and success. Family activities build relationships with the school and the students, and the curriculum focuses on preparing college-bound students.

Parochial schools promote a blend of academics and Catholic faith traditions and values. Students are responsible for upholding strong moral values and aca-demic standards. A “grade A” teaching staff is available to help students and parents focus on achieving academic stan-dards while surrounding students with a supportive Christian community.

The St. Matthews-Eline Branch Library has served the community for 50 years; the establishment moved to its current location at 3901 Grandview Avenue in April of 1994. It is one of the busiest libraries in the Louisville metro area with a knowledgeable reference staff available to handle a large circulation and assist library visitors in book or video selection or in accessing the Internet through one of several computer stations available to the public. A children’s area, story time area and a meeting room attract visitors of all ages. St. Matthews-Eline Branch Library also offers a program of infor-mational and educational speakers from the community.

Education

St. Matthews offers many opportunities for leisure and recreation. So whether you’re stopping by to

play or deciding to stay, we promise you will always find comfortable accommodations in the area. We

welcome you to come and enjoy all we have to offer!Among the many attractions you’ll find in St. Matthews are

museums, historic sites, parks and wineries. One of the most familiar landmarks in nearby Louisville is Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. During Derby season locals and visitors have a ringside seat to watch the best of the world’s horses run for the roses. Another great venue for sports fans is basketball, and with Louisville only a 20-minute drive away, Cardinal fans enjoy coach Rick Pitino and his team as they return to the Big East Conference.

Several festivals held in the community offer arts and crafts, great food, and lots of fun for residents and visitors. Among those not to be missed are The St. Matthews Community Festival, held on the second Sunday in June; the Tortoise and Hare 5K Run/Walk, held in September; and Light Up St. Matthews, held the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Other interesting and fun-filled events in the community include Sampling St. Matthews. Local businesses and restaurants offer a “taste” of their wares during this July business expo.

Looking for extreme sports? St. Matthews offers many skate-board parks and field-and-stream outdoor activities. Other day-trip ideas include Big Creek Campground, Hold the Adrenaline, The Thrill of the Skill and Urban Renewal, as well as nearby

Mammoth Cave National Park, Wildflower National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Major attractions within a 12-mile radius of St. Matthews include the University of Louisville, Six Flags Fun Park in Kentucky Kingdom theme park, Oxmoor Mall, Mall St. Matthews, Louisville Slugger Museum and The Louisville Zoo, not to men-tion The Belle of Louisville and the Star of Louisville river cruises. And St. Matthews is home to several corporate business centers such as Baptist Hospital East, Norton Suburban Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Kaden Place, Lakeview Office Park, Bluegrass Parkway and Linn Station.

Museum and history buffs will enjoy these popular museums and historic landmarks in St. Matthews: The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, Farmington Historic Home, Thomas Edison’s House, Zachary Taylor’s House and Farnsley-Moremen Landing.

We invite you to shop till you drop in the St. Matthews/Louisville district. Visit the downtown Galleria, Jefferson Mall on the Outer Loop in the south end, or Mall St. Matthews on Shelbyville Road. The Summit and Oxmoor Center are also excit-ing venues. Oxmoor center houses over 110 stores and 14 res-taurants, guaranteeing you’ll find just the right purchase. For the trend-conscious shopper, stroll along Bardstown Road and check out these unique stores: General Eccentric, Clodhoppers, Pataya and the Blink Boutique.

Along with great shopping, Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue offer several theaters for the movie maniac and opportuni-ties to enjoy live music as well. And for the culturally hip, Fourth

Recreation & Tourism

Street Live is the place to be for dancing and enjoying the club scene. Popular spots include Bar Louisville, Have a Nice Day Café, Red Lounge and Maiers.

If all that dancing makes you hungry, you’ll always find a great eatery within 2 miles of St. Matthews. Choose from Texas Roadhouse, Panera Bread, Sakura Blue, Penn Station Sandwich, Wild Oats, Frichs Big Boy, Bahama Breeze, Alexanders, Ruth Chris Steakhouse, Ernesto’s, Ruby Tuesday and Logan Steakhouse. Del Frisco’s is a popular upscale restaurant catering to the sophisticated palate.

not the community to the hospital. Hospitals in St. Matthews provide more than health care; they
