Our BeliefsEducation is not about finding the model answer as
many problems our children will face in the future will have no model answer
There is no map, so we need to provide them with a compass (adapted from sharing by Mr Lim Siong Guan with SMSS staff)
Failure is part of the learning process, whether in the formal curriculum or social / life skills
Assessment is part of the learning process where the learning is more important than the outcome
SMSS Compass: School Values
(Upholding Integrity, Learning Continuously, Taking Pride, Being Resilient, Showing Care)
Mission
To provide an all-round education in
a Christ-centred environment to
nurture confident, creative and caring young ladies who will serve God, the
Country and the Community.
Vision
A Community of Learners Growing and
Glowing For God.

CHALLENGE OF ADOLESCENCE(ACCOUNT OF ADOLESCENCE, ANNA FREUD)
I take it that it is normal for an adolescent to behave for a considerable
period of time in an inconsistent and unpredictable manner; to fight
her impulses and accept them; to love her parents and to hate them; to
revolt against them and to be dependent on them; to be deeply ashamed to
acknowledge her mother before others and unexpectedly, to desire heart-
to-heart talks with her; to thrive on imitation of others while searching
unceasingly for her own identity; to be more idealistic, artistic, generous, and
unselfish than she will ever be again, but also the opposite: self-centred,
egoistic, calculating.
Such fluctuations and extreme opposites would have been deemed
highly abnormal at any other time of life.
At this time they may signify no more than that an adult structure of
personality takes a long time to emerge, that the individual in question does
not cease to experiment and is in no hurry to close down on possibilities.
Common Developmental Characteristics during Adolescence
Learning about his/her own identity:
o Who am I?
o Where am I headed?
o How do I fit into society?
Seeking acceptance from peers
Leaning on good relationship with parents and guidance from them
I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous
are your works; and that my soul knows right well.
Psalms 139
POSSIBLE DISPLAYED BEHAVIOUR
• The Cold Shoulder
• Attitude of a boarder in the home
• Reluctance to engage in family activities, preferring their private
space
• Allergy to Questions (from adults)
• Monosyllabic response
• Showing annoyance / irritation when questions are asked
• Surprisingly Mean
• Change in dressing (e.g. experimenting in more revealing
clothes, make-up)
KEY POINTS FROM CHAPTERS 1 & 2 OF BOOK
• Replacement of the family with friends
• Easily (and overly) troubled by peer conflicts (a.k.a. friendship
issues)
• The “frenemy”
• Engaging the risky / “out of ordinary “behaviour when with the
group of friends
• “Tribal Warfare”
• Addiction to Social Media – connecting with friends
POSSIBLE DISPLAYED BEHAVIOUR
KEY POINTS FROM CHAPTERS 1 & 2 OF BOOK
•A sudden internal pressure to separate themselves from
anything that seems childlike, whether consciously or sub-
consciously (including relationship with parents)
•Overwhelmed by onset of puberty but uncomfortable to
talk about the changes, especially for girls whose physical
development pushes ahead much faster than the
psychological development
•The swimming pool metaphor
WHAT THE GIRL IS GOING THROUGH(CONSCIOUSLY OR SUB-CONSCIOUSLY)
KEY POINTS FROM CHAPTERS 1 & 2 OF BOOK
• Feel the need to replace the family with a tribe that they
feel proud to call their own
• Pressure to be in a tribe as it affects the “social status”
•Using meanness to maintain social power,
Popular ≠Well-liked
•The brain’s social emotional network outmatch its
sensible cognitive control system (charged by social
rewards)
WHAT THE GIRL IS GOING THROUGH(CONSCIOUSLY OR SUB-CONSCIOUSLY)
KEY POINTS FROM CHAPTERS 1 & 2 OF BOOK
WHAT ADULTS CAN DO
•Do not take the rejection personally (the toggling between
wanting independence and returning to child-likeness is part of
the transition process)
•Continue to insist on basic courtesy from the teenager
•Doing things with the teenager, rather than doing it for her
before letting her do it alone
• Preparing the teenager for the online world before she is
allowed to navigate it freely, set the terms of use from the start
•Age appropriate exposure and material provision for the
teenager
KEY POINTS FROM CHAPTERS 1 & 2 OF BOOK
WHAT ADULTS CAN DO
• Help the teenager be assertive without being mean
• Model conflict management for the teenager
• Do not set threats that cannot be carried through
• Provide ways out for your teenager when faced with
uncomfortable situations
• Help the teenager realise that there are problems that are
beyond them, and call for help is not betrayal of their friends
• Make clear to teenager rules of virtual social behaviour is the
same as that of real social behaviour

Personal Assistant to child
Allow child to make mistakes, experience failure
Transition to Secondary 1:
How can parents / caregivers help?
Being mouthpiece of your child
Allow child to take responsibility and resolve issues
School’s Approach to Students’ Holistic Development Process of teaching a child what type of behaviour is
acceptable and what type is not acceptable, and how totake responsibility for the consequences of her actions. This may involve punishment, such as a time out, and atother times, rewards, such as compliments.
The Authoritative approach: Clear expectations andconsequences with high level of support structure for thechild. There is flexibility and collaborative problem solvingwith the child when dealing with behavioural challenges.
In short, High Expectations with High Support.
