ST JACOB’S TRAIL - SELF GUIDED WALKING HOLIDAY
Follow in the footsteps of St Jacob on this pilgrim trail through Salzburg, into Bavaria then finishing
in the pristine valley of St Johann in Tyrol. Visit historic churches which have been welcoming
pilgrims for thousands of years as you walk through the foothills of the Alps. Meander through lush
green valleys with dramatic mountain views and enjoy lakeside and forest walking. This is the
perfect walk which explores this tranquil area and lets you discover the rich history of pilgrim life.
Your holiday starts by the side of Lake Wallersee where you spend your first evening. Heading south, you
follow the trail through forest trails passing many important chapels to Salzburg. Its worth spending an extra
night to explore ‘Mozart’s birth place. Crossing the German border you enter the Spa town of Bad
Reichenhall and then shortly after you enter the Tyrol region of Austria and follow the trail south. You pass
the small town of Waidring and after visiting St Jacobs church you finish the walk in St. Johann.
Fabulous walking is combined with traditional chalet Hotel accommodation. You will stay in 3 star Hotels
with breakfast included each morning. Baggage transfer and great backup are of course included to ensure
that you enjoy every minute of your stay in this alpine region of Austria.

Some of the days walking are fairly long but the
overall path is flat with very little ups and downs.

DAY 1
Arrive Seekirchen/Lake Wallersee
Seekirchen is located by Lake Wallersee, the
largest lake in the Salzburg lake district. It is
easily accessible by a direct train from Salzburg
(15 mins). Many low cost airlines fly into
Salzburg Airport including Ryanair, Easyjet, Jet
2, Flybe and flythomascook.
On arrival at your hotel in Seekirchen relax and
take a stroll around the village visiting the ‘Lake
Castle’ admiring the views across the lake.

DAY 2
Walk to Eugendorf
This morning you start off by meeting one of our
local partners at 08:30 for a briefing about your
walk. They will provide you with detailed route
notes and answer any questions you have. A
short transfer to Oberhofen follows where the
walking trail starts today. Heading south you
pass Lake Wallersee through green pastures and
pass many old chapels on route. You finish
todays walk by heading through a nature reserve
to the market town of Eugendorf.

DAY 3
Walk to Salzburg
Today you head down to the delightful city of
Salzburg, fantastic views prevail across to the
mountain ranges you pass through in the next
few days. We recommend visiting the church of
‘Maria Plain’ which is a famous pilgrims church
with views over Salzburg and the surrounding
valley. It is renowned for its baroc style
architecture and many pilgrims come to visit from
afar. Quiet paths follow and you soon reach the
river Salzach where you follow the side of the
river into the centre of town. If you have time we
recommend adding an extra night in Salzburg as
there is so much to see and do. You can visit the
birthplace of Mozart, wander through the old
town which is a UNESCO world heritage site and
shop in this marvellous city.

DAY 4
Walk to Bad Reichenhall
Todays walk leaves the city of Salzburg behind
and crosses the German border at Grobgmain to
enter Bavaria. You visit the castle of Marzoll on
route and follow forest tracks to Bad Reichenhall.
Take time to visit the new thermal Spa here in
the salt capital of Bavaria.
Walk: 18km, 5.5 hrs
Overnight: Bad Reichenhall
Hotel - Dora
DAY 5
Walk to Unken
Todays walk follows the river Saalach back into
Austria and the Salzburg area. Passing Lake
Saalachsee you head into the foothills of the
mountains through the idyllic Saalach valley.
Unken is your final destination today, it’s a
peaceful mountain village with a pretty church.
Walk: 17km, 6 hrs
Overnight: Unken

DAY 6
Walk to Waidring/St Ulrich
This is the nicest day along the whole trail so
take your time and enjoy it! Continue along the
river Saalach and watch out for kayakers below,
Enter the mountain village of Lofer which is a
quaint village with lots of traditional charm. You
can take the optional visit to Saint Martin with its
pilgrims church or just follow the forest path
following the ‘Jakobsweg’ to Waidring.

PILGRIM TRAIL FROM SALZBURG TO TYROL
DAY 7
Walk to St Johann in Tyrol
On the last day you can either follow the route
via the dyke to St Johann or take the route past
Lake Pillersee and St Jacobs Church - the
second option being the more spectacular. The
walk finishes in the market town of St Johann
which is surrounded by Alpine Mountains.

DAY 8
Onward Travel
Additional Nights and Extensions
You can add additional nights at any point along
the walk, we suggest having an additional night
in Salzburg to visit Mozarts birth place or at the
end in St Johann in Tyrol to relax after your
week of walking. Please contact us for more
details.

Grade & Fitness
This walking holiday is graded Moderate. Daily
walks can be quite long but are fairly gentle and
not too undulating. You should be a regular
walker and have a good level of walking fitness
to get the most from this holiday.

we provide you with detailed picture route notes
to follow at each step.

We specifically select your accommodation to
ensure that you enjoy every minute of your stay.
They all offer a warm welcome to walkers,
traditional hospitality and delicious local food.
We aim to give you an authentic experience and
use local family run accommodations. All hotels
are on a 3* basis and have en-suite rooms.
Alternate accommodation
During high season, you might be booked into a
different accommodation which is not listed in the
description, and the start or end of some of your
walking routes may be slightly altered. Any
alternative accommodation will be of the same
standard as those described and details will all
be sent to you.
Single Rooms
If you require single rooms within your party we
would be happy to accommodate you although
there is a single room supplement payable.
Solo Walkers
This holiday is available for solo walkers but we
would recommend that you are experienced in
walking and navigating alone. If you are travelling
solo the holiday is slightly more expensive as
some costs are not shared.
Meals
A delicious breakfast is included each morning.
Most accommodations are happy to provide a
packed lunch - this should be requested on
arrival. Or you can pick up lunch in the village or
stop along the trail. Dinner will be readily
available at either your hotel or a local restaurant
and we can add on a half board supplement if
required. Your pictured route notes have details
for each day including rest stops and places of
interest.
Baggage Transfer
Your bags will be transferred between your
accommodation as per your itinerary. We ask
you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to
20kg per person.

Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes and a day pack.

Seekirchen is located by Lake Wallersee, the
largest lake in the Salzburg lake district. It is
easily accessible by a direct train from Salzburg

Getting from St Johann in Tyrol
You can take a direct train from St Johann to
Salzburg (approx. 2hrs 30 mins). There are
many trains throughout the day and the times
can be found on the DB Bahn website.
