August 18, 2013 The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the He-brews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. Our Little Rock Scripture study will be adding a new feature to its study this August. On Thursday evening, August 22nd at 7pm in Renehan Hall, we will be reading Rediscovering Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. This book was our Christmas gift last year from Fr. Olin and it is truly one that should be opened and read if not shared with everyone you know! If you do not have the book, and would like to get a copy to join us in this study, the cost is $3 per book. After this 6 week course, we will begin our Scripture study on the Gospel of Matthew! The cost of this study is $15 for the materials. We also are offering the same study on Wednesday mornings, beginning August 21st at 9:30am. Since that group already read, Rediscovering Catholicism, we will begin with the book, Rhythm of Life by Matthew Kelly. You can purchase that book on your own or call me and I will purchase multiple copies together at $10 per book. Let me know ASAP if you want to join us. After this study, we will continue with our scripture study on the Gospel of Matthew as well. We are called to be a light to the world. Slow down and take the time to be that light. For more info, call: Shelly Smith at 661-252-4683.

CONFIRMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY
Pope Francis Encourages Service to Others
During the recent World Youth Days in Brazil, Pope Francis spoke to the crowd about spreading their faith to the “fringes of society, even to those who seems farthest away, most indifferent.” Volunteering with Family Promise SCV is a perfect opportunity to live our faith in the way that Pope Francis encourages us to do so. The week of August 21st, St. Clare will be assisting Bouquet Canyon Church in hosting families who are without homes of their own and depending on the support and generosity of people like you.
If you can help provide hospitality or meals August 21st through August 24th, please contact Karen Mapes @(661) 251-3211 or at: kmapes@socal.rr.com
For information on Family Promise visit their website at: www.familypromisescv.org
(many people call the parish office around the holidays wanting to know if we know of a place they and their families could work at a soup kitchen — or some way they could feed the homeless. Don’t wait until the holidays—here is your chance to prepare a meal and provide hope and comfort to a homeless family right here in Santa Clarita.)
OCCUPANCY The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy. It depends upon how we occupy that place. —St. Thérèse of Lisieux

“God’s Time Will Come”
Are you suffering because someone dear to you has stopped practicing the faith or has left the Church
altogether? If so, St. Clare’s has a prayer group which meets in the Church every Friday at 7:30 pm. We begin
with the celebration of the Mass and complete with devo-tions specifically for the intentions of bringing our loved
ones back into the active participation of the faith. Please join us in lifting our voices in prayer.

Monday through Thursday, Fridays prayers will be held in the church. Bring your Rosary. Holy cards that explain how to say the Chaplet will be available.
For questions please contact: Sheila Wheeler @251-1203
Have You Missed the Choir at the 11:00am Mass?
We’ll be back soon—Our Thursday rehearsals will get underway starting August 22nd at 7pm in the church. We always welcome new members and if you are interested in joining us, this is a great time to do so. Have you been blessed with the ability to carry a tune? Have you been looking for a way to serve our Lord? Then look no further. We have thousands of families in our parish—surely we can find 20 to 30 people who will commit to enriching the Mass and helping people draw closer to God. Come by for a few rehearsals and see what we’re all about. You’ll be glad you did.
