Reason to Rejoice Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its char-acter as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Ad-vent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing.
Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly de-scribes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gos-pel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happen-ing in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Je-sus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news pro-claimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). Check out a Packet of 5 Tickets! For Every Five Tickets You Sell, Receive a Chance to Win $500!
Thanks to some very generous donors, there is again a 2-for-1 matching gift program for schools run by the Archdio-cese of Chicago. For every dollar designated to a qualify-ing school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020, the school will receive two dollars in matching funds. The donations are capped at $50,000 per school. So if you donate $1,000 and desig-nate St. Ann School Lansing, your donation will have a net cost of $250 (remember you get $750 back on your state taxes), and your donation will provide a total of $3,000 to St. Ann’s to use for student scholarships.
Donors who would like to receive the tax credit for their 2019 taxes should begin the process prior to December 16, 2019 to ensure that they have enough time to make their gift by December 31, 2019. If you choose to make your gift in January or February, you will be able to claim your tax credit on your 2020 tax return. YOU CAN DES-IGNATE ST. ANN SCHOOL AS THE RECIPIENT OF YOUR FUNDING! This is a wonderful opportunity to help our school and support the mission of providing a quality Catholic education to students in our community who may not otherwise be able to afford it. For more information please visit archchicago.org/tcs or call 312.534.2617
WANT TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO ST. ANN SCHOOL

It is recommended that families apply with BOTH Empower Illinois and Big Shoulders as early as
possible when the applications open. The money will be allocated very quickly!

Special thanks to our Giving Tree crew, headed by Amy Hollifield and Nancy Hammer. Together with their industrious helpers, they sorted, filled in the gaps, wrapped, packed, and schlepped gifts for 250 children from Lansing schools this year. Thanks also to everyone who took a tag (or two or three) from the Giving Tree, bought, and returned your gifts on time. We could not have done it without your generosity!

St. Ann Posada Saturday, December 21, 6:00 p.m. in Church
Las Posadas, (Spanish Translation: The Inns) is a religious tradition celebrated in Mexico and some parts of the United States between December 16 and 24. Las Posadas com-memorates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. When they were unable to find lodging in Bethlehem, Joseph and Mary were forced to seek shelter in a stable, where the Christ Child was born.
Beginning on December 16 and ending nine days later on Christmas Eve, Las Posadas commemorates the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy. Each night, one family agrees to house the pilgrims. And so usually it begins: at dusk, a procession of the faithful with lighted candles goes from door to door seeking posada while singing traditional songs. The children are often dressed as angels and shepherds.
Posada evening, we will gather at Church by 5:45 p.m., and songs will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Rosary. Then we will all go over to the Parish Hall to share hot drinks and break the piñata.
As we introduce our first Posada to St. Ann Parish, we will need some help with donations of sweets and volunteers that night. Since Religious Education will not have classes on December 22 & 23, we ask all families to be present for this event.
Preparations have begun, but those with Posada experi-ence are more than welcome to come forward and help us organize this night. Please call the Parish Office at 708.895.6700 to get involved.
To donate sweets or candies for small treat bags and the piñata (dulces para Aguinaldo y pinata), please bring contri-butions to the Parish Office during regular hours, Monday through Friday. Other donations for the evening should go directly to the Parish Hall on December 21 beginning at 3:30 p.m. We are seeking the following:
Hot chocolate (chocolate caliente) Champurrado (traditional Mexican hot drink) Bread (pan dulce) Any other desserts or cakes Cookies
Volunteers: All parents and students are invited to volun-teer. Participating students must be in church by 5:10 p.m. Students are also needed in the Parish Hall for set up at 3:30 p.m. and clean up at the end, about 7:30 p.m. Confir-mation candidates will receive service hours.
