Atherstone Fr Stephen is saying the 6.15pm Mass at Atherstone
on Saturday: this is the last time for a while as other
priests have become available to help. Please con-
tinue to pray for Fr Andrew’s speedy recovery
Organists at St Anne’s Unfortunately injury and family illness are reducing
the availability of both our organists. Kate Deeming
has a broken foot and Anthony Bell’s brother in law
and mother in law have had to be taken into hospi-
tal back home in Newcastle-on-Tyne. We shall be
all right for Christmas we think, but in the mean-
time we may be singing a little less and unaccompa-
nied a lot more at St Anne’s. Please pray for all
who make music in our churches.
Chapel End URC Closing Service We have been invited to Chapel End URC’s final
service before the church closes. Sunday 5th Janu-
ary 2014 at 3.00pm. Please pray for the congrega-
tion as they face this difficult time

Sunday’s Readings...
I saiah calls on even the wilder-
ness to rejoice, since the Lord is
on His way. This news should give
us courage and hope, and the blind seeing,
the deaf hearing, the lame leaping and the
dumb speaking will all be signs of God’s pres-
ence. John the Baptist, now chained and kept
lonely in his prison cell has fearlessly pro-
claimed Christ’s coming. But even he has a
moment of doubt, and sends word to ask Je-
sus who he is. But the blind are receiving
their sight, the lame walk, the deaf hear and
the dead are raised. Of course God has come
in Jesus. And with words of praise and en-
couragement the messengers are sent back to
John. This Sunday – traditionally known as
“Gaudete” Sunday from the opening words of
the old Latin introit for the day, “Rejoice” -
calls us to remember that the Lord is very
near. Amid the world’s trouble and suffering,
He comes close and wonderful happenings
occur in His pres-
ence. Perhaps the
greatest of those
is happiness for
those who do not
lose faith in Him!
Once again, the temperature drops but heating bills rise so to help keep
our bills down—
PLEASE KEEP THE INNER CHURCH DOORS SHUT!
An Extract from “The Joy of the Gospel” by Pope Francis
I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed
personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting
him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no
one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord”. The Lord does not dis-appoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to
realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say
to Jesus: “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with you. I need you. Save
me once again, Lord, take me once more into your redeeming embrace”. How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more: God nev-
er tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy. More extracts to follow. Full text at www.vatican.va as Evangelii Gaudium
