Ontario market among leaders in 2016 Good news, Ontario homeowners
and prospective homebuyers –
your housing market is expected to
be among the strongest in Canada
this year.
For this, we can thank a reasonably
strong economy and continuing low
interest rates, among other factors.
The Canadian Real Estate
Association, in fact, forecasts that
Ontario and BC will lead the country
in 2016 in terms of sales activity and
price growth.
The national picture is bright, with
sales forecast to grow fi ve per cent
and prices 8.4 per cent. In Ontario,
sales are projected to rise 9.3 per cent,
and average prices eight per cent.
BC will be tops in Canada,
expected to grow more than 21 per
cent in sales and 11.5 per cent in
average prices.
Other markets across the country
should be so lucky, with far more
challenging economies and other

WRHBA’s SAM Awards of Distinction
Recognizing industry achievers and building excellence
THE WATERLOO REGION HOME BUILDERS’
Association (WRHBA) recently marked its 20th
Annual Sales and Marketing (SAM) Awards of
Distinction. As the premier housing event for the
region, the SAM Awards are an opportunity to
pay tribute and honour the creativity, innovation
and talent of builders, renovators, designers and
marketers within the new home building and
renovation industry.
WRHBA’s President Graem Jackson (New
Lifestyle Homes Inc.) said, “(The awards are) a
celebration of many things – of our history, our
achievements, our successes and most importantly
our people, our membership. WRHBA’s members
are among the most creative in this region, and you
can see from the line-up of finalists and winners
that they do an exceptional job.”
A SAM award is recognized as the industry’s stamp
of quality. Both industry watchers and consumers
alike look for SAM Award recipients when reviewing
new home construction and renovations, as there
is no recognition more respected in distinguishing
top-quality construction.
Marie Schroeder, WRHBA’s executive officer, said
“The residential development and construction
industry is a driving force in Waterloo Region and
as such, it deserves recognition. Many builders
have the whole package – design and marketing. It
requires innovation and a lot of perseverance and
resources to deliver the customer experience over
the entire spectrum of the home buying process.”

per cent of the overall workforce.
The LEDC continues to aggressively
pursue the sectors that have
been the foundation of London’s
economy in the past, including the
automotive parts and food processing
industries, and is also dedicated to the
expanding in information technology
and life sciences.
London also boasts a wealth
of local attractions, such as the
Western Fair Raceway, Fanshawe
Pioneer Village, Boler Mountain, the
Royal Canadian Regiment Museum,
Museum London, Theatre London,
London Regional Children’s Museum
and Storybook Gardens.
While the city continues to grow,
it remains affordable. The average
home price in London as of the fourth
quarter of 2015 was about $279,549,
with two-storeys and bungalows
among the popular choices. London’s
north end is growing substantially.
New highrise condominiums are
being erected in a rejuvenated city
core. Numerous builders have long
seen the potential from developing
communities in the city, as Eastforest
Homes, Sifton Properties and Fusion
Homes have projects underway. In
neighbouring communities New
Hamburg, St. Thomas, Tillsonburg
and Woodstock, Senator Homes,
Geranium Homes, Claysam Homes,
Stonecroft Homes, Doug Tarry
Homes, Fusion, Van El Condominiums
and Tillsonburg Developments all
have new-home offerings.
The south end of London lies at
a junction of Hwys. 401 and 402,
an important landmark symbolic
for commerce, industry and trade,
situating the town conveniently just
two hours east of Detroit and two
hours west of Toronto.
Healthcare and education are
important to the London area.
London Health Sciences Centre,
including Victoria and University
hospitals, provides a growing
population with health services and
research. London is also home to
Fanshawe College of Applied Arts
& Technology, and the University of
Western Ontario.
London is a big sports town, too. The
University of Western Ontario Mustangs
have captured numerous national
titles in everything from football to
squash. The London Knights of the
Ontario Hockey League have a new
home at the John Labatt Centre. The
London Majors of the Intercounty
Baseball League play at Labatt Park
– the oldest baseball venue in North
America. London is also known as the
Golf Capital of Canada, with more
than 100 public courses within an
hour’s drive of the city’s core.
London’s economic diversity comes from such large companies as Labatt Breweries and London Life, and it’s home to the Canadian headquarters or major production centre for 3M Canada, EllisDon, Kellogg Canada, Diamond Aircraft and Trojan Technologies.
Neighbourhood Profile
OLD NORTH LONDONThe elegant heritage neighbourhood is a popular neighbourhood for staff at the University of Western Ontario, as well students who are looking for an alternative to dormitory living.
LifestyleHealthy, active people enjoying the finer things in life is what Old North London’s all about. A very “happening” part of the city, from the sports fields to the research breakthroughs at UWO. It’s ideal for those who like the quiet life: an aesthete’s dream from an architectural standpoint, and a safe neighbourhood for people of all ages.
VibeMore stately and affluent than the trendy neighbouring areas to the south, Old North London has a distinctly respectable feel. The area is dominated by institutions, and backs onto the university’s campus via the famous Richmond Gates. It’s quiet and scenic, a refined escape from all of the excitement offered downtown.
Meet the neighboursAffluent families with children flock to Old North London, and people under the age of 19 make up almost 20 per cent of the population, according to the 2011 Census. Married couples without children at home are well represented, and many academics (both active and Emeritus) also call the area home. Given the abundance of high-density housing and proximity to campus, it’s also a very desirable location for students.
In the areaThe university and its affiliate colleges offer a host of amenities that locals can access. The University Tennis Centre, which offers lessons to all ages and league play seven days a week for adults, is very popular. Numerous parks add to the ambience of this very green neighbourhood, including Ross, Broughdale, Tetherwood, North Branch and Doidge Park.
Planes, trains & automobilesThis can be a very pedestrian-friendly area, particularly if you’re a student, with the campus in easy reach. But bigger houses mean bigger blocks, and a long walk to places like the supermarket in this heavily residential area, so most homeowners find cars necessary. Cyclists have access to a good network of bike paths linking various parts of the university to the city streets and parks.
THE CITY OF LONDON is much
more than the hub of southwestern
Ontario. True, the city of 360,000
residents (470,000 including
surrounding villages and towns)
is known as The Forest City for its
abundance of urban forests. Yet
London offers a cornucopia of sights
and sounds that truly make it a
beloved destination, and concurrently
the perfect place to call “home.”
London’s population was boosted
by 60,000 people with a 1961
annexation, and by 1976 there
were 250,000 residents. Another
annexation in 1991 changed the
city forever.
City Focus | LONDON
Famous Londoners have put the
city on the map in a big way. Big band
leader Guy Lombardo and His Royal
Canadians hailed from London. So do
actors Hume Cronyn, Victor Garber
and Rachel McAdams, Country singer
Tommy Hunter, Canadian Baseball
Hall of Fame’s George “Mooney”
Gibson and Canadian Golf Hall of
Fame’s Sandy Sommerville. More
recent local heroes include 2010
Winter Olympic Ice Dancing Gold
Medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
Today, London’s demographics
showcase a diverse, multicultural
mosaic, with English, Scottish, Irish,
German, Italian and Latin ethnic
origins all heavily represented.
London’s commercial identity
demonstrates a diverse flavour.
Manufacturing, health care and
social assistance, retail, education
and accommodation/food services
top London’s industrial chart. A
combined effort from the city, the
London Economic Development
Corp. (LEDC), London Chamber of
Commerce and Tourism London
ensures the city remains vibrant in its
efforts to attract business and cater to
its residents who love the small-town
feel within a large city.
London’s economic diversity
comes from such large companies
as Labatt Breweries and London
Life, and it’s home to the Canadian
headquarters or major production
centre for 3M Canada, EllisDon,
Kellogg Canada, Diamond Aircraft and
Trojan Technologies. And thanks to a
growing advanced communications
infrastructure and well-qualified
workforce, London is also the
location of choice for many customer
call centres.
An increasingly diverse economy
has allowed London to endure
cyclical downturns in certain sectors
and it provides a strong base from
which to expand. Manufacturing is
still the largest sector, employing
more than 38,000 people or about 16

pursue the sectors that have
been the foundation of London’s
economy in the past, including the
automotive parts and food processing
industries, and is also dedicated to the
expanding in information technology
and life sciences.
London also boasts a wealth
of local attractions, such as the
Western Fair Raceway, Fanshawe
Pioneer Village, Boler Mountain, the
Royal Canadian Regiment Museum,
Museum London, Theatre London,
London Regional Children’s Museum
and Storybook Gardens.
While the city continues to grow,
it remains affordable. The average
home price in London as of the fourth
quarter of 2015 was about $279,549,
with two-storeys and bungalows
among the popular choices. London’s
north end is growing substantially.
New highrise condominiums are
being erected in a rejuvenated city
core. Numerous builders have long
seen the potential from developing
communities in the city, as Eastforest
Homes, Sifton Properties and Fusion
Homes have projects underway. In
neighbouring communities New
Hamburg, St. Thomas, Tillsonburg
and Woodstock, Senator Homes,
Geranium Homes, Claysam Homes,
Stonecroft Homes, Doug Tarry
Homes, Fusion, Van El Condominiums
and Tillsonburg Developments all
have new-home offerings.
The south end of London lies at
a junction of Hwys. 401 and 402,
an important landmark symbolic
for commerce, industry and trade,
situating the town conveniently just
two hours east of Detroit and two
hours west of Toronto.
Healthcare and education are
important to the London area.
London Health Sciences Centre,
including Victoria and University
hospitals, provides a growing
population with health services and
research. London is also home to
Fanshawe College of Applied Arts
& Technology, and the University of
Western Ontario.
London is a big sports town, too. The
University of Western Ontario Mustangs
have captured numerous national
titles in everything from football to
squash. The London Knights of the
Ontario Hockey League have a new
home at the John Labatt Centre. The
London Majors of the Intercounty
Baseball League play at Labatt Park
– the oldest baseball venue in North
America. London is also known as the
Golf Capital of Canada, with more
than 100 public courses within an
hour’s drive of the city’s core.
London’s economic diversity comes from such large companies as Labatt Breweries and London Life, and it’s home to the Canadian headquarters or major production centre for 3M Canada, EllisDon, Kellogg Canada, Diamond Aircraft and Trojan Technologies.
Neighbourhood Profile
OLD NORTH LONDONThe elegant heritage neighbourhood is a popular neighbourhood for staff at the University of Western Ontario, as well students who are looking for an alternative to dormitory living.
LifestyleHealthy, active people enjoying the finer things in life is what Old North London’s all about. A very “happening” part of the city, from the sports fields to the research breakthroughs at UWO. It’s ideal for those who like the quiet life: an aesthete’s dream from an architectural standpoint, and a safe neighbourhood for people of all ages.
VibeMore stately and affluent than the trendy neighbouring areas to the south, Old North London has a distinctly respectable feel. The area is dominated by institutions, and backs onto the university’s campus via the famous Richmond Gates. It’s quiet and scenic, a refined escape from all of the excitement offered downtown.
Meet the neighboursAffluent families with children flock to Old North London, and people under the age of 19 make up almost 20 per cent of the population, according to the 2011 Census. Married couples without children at home are well represented, and many academics (both active and Emeritus) also call the area home. Given the abundance of high-density housing and proximity to campus, it’s also a very desirable location for students.
In the areaThe university and its affiliate colleges offer a host of amenities that locals can access. The University Tennis Centre, which offers lessons to all ages and league play seven days a week for adults, is very popular. Numerous parks add to the ambience of this very green neighbourhood, including Ross, Broughdale, Tetherwood, North Branch and Doidge Park.
Planes, trains & automobilesThis can be a very pedestrian-friendly area, particularly if you’re a student, with the campus in easy reach. But bigger houses mean bigger blocks, and a long walk to places like the supermarket in this heavily residential area, so most homeowners find cars necessary. Cyclists have access to a good network of bike paths linking various parts of the university to the city streets and parks.
THE CITY OF LONDON is much
more than the hub of southwestern
Ontario. True, the city of 360,000
residents (470,000 including
surrounding villages and towns)
is known as The Forest City for its
abundance of urban forests. Yet
London offers a cornucopia of sights
and sounds that truly make it a
beloved destination, and concurrently
the perfect place to call “home.”
London’s population was boosted
by 60,000 people with a 1961
annexation, and by 1976 there
were 250,000 residents. Another
annexation in 1991 changed the
city forever.
City Focus | LONDON
Famous Londoners have put the
city on the map in a big way. Big band
leader Guy Lombardo and His Royal
Canadians hailed from London. So do
actors Hume Cronyn, Victor Garber
and Rachel McAdams, Country singer
Tommy Hunter, Canadian Baseball
Hall of Fame’s George “Mooney”
Gibson and Canadian Golf Hall of
Fame’s Sandy Sommerville. More
recent local heroes include 2010
Winter Olympic Ice Dancing Gold
Medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
Today, London’s demographics
showcase a diverse, multicultural
mosaic, with English, Scottish, Irish,
German, Italian and Latin ethnic
origins all heavily represented.
London’s commercial identity
demonstrates a diverse flavour.
Manufacturing, health care and
social assistance, retail, education
and accommodation/food services
top London’s industrial chart. A
combined effort from the city, the
London Economic Development
Corp. (LEDC), London Chamber of
Commerce and Tourism London
ensures the city remains vibrant in its
efforts to attract business and cater to
its residents who love the small-town
feel within a large city.
London’s economic diversity
comes from such large companies
as Labatt Breweries and London
Life, and it’s home to the Canadian
headquarters or major production
centre for 3M Canada, EllisDon,
Kellogg Canada, Diamond Aircraft and
Trojan Technologies. And thanks to a
growing advanced communications
infrastructure and well-qualified
workforce, London is also the
location of choice for many customer
call centres.
An increasingly diverse economy
has allowed London to endure
cyclical downturns in certain sectors
and it provides a strong base from
which to expand. Manufacturing is
still the largest sector, employing
more than 38,000 people or about 16

THE HAMILTON-HALTON Home
Builders’ Association recently held
its annual Holiday Social and Toy
Drive, collecting more than 100 toys
that were donated to City Kidz. This
toy drive was a great success, with
more toys donated than last year
thanks to the generous support of
Association members and partners.
Every year, the HHHBA answers the
call to collect much needed toys for
kids in our community and every year
the success of this event continues
to grow.
The new toys were donated to
City Kidz, a non-profi t organization
dedicated to improving the lives of
children living in the inner city. This
year, City Kidz hopes to collect 4,000
new toys for children in the Hamilton
community. They will distribute
the gifts at their annual Christmas
parties where they provide children
with dinner, candy bags, prizes and a
personally selected gift.
Says Allan Roshko, HHHBA president, “Our Association
continuously strives to give back to our community. Being
a father, I understand fi rst-hand the joy that the holiday
season brings. It warms my heart to be able to share that
happiness with children who otherwise would not have
experienced Christmas this year. I’m delighted by the
overwhelming support of our members, bringing more
toys this year than ever before.”
We are happy to report that the majority of the toys
donated fi t into the most needed category for kids aged
10 to 12. The HHHBA is delighted to have contributed to
such a wonderful cause and inspirational organization and
we would like to thank everyone who donated gifts for
children in our community.
