Beatniks

Effects of Sputnik

• Prompts a massive investment in math and science education

• Ten years later, America would land a man on the moon for the first time

Arms Race

The successful launch of Sputnik prompts a massive investment in more weapons, particularly nuclear warheads. Americans fear that they are on the wrong side of a “missile gap” with the Soviet Union. Later, we learn that it wasn’t true…

22nd Amendment• In 1952, Eisenhower was elected President

• He was the first Republican to be elected President since 1928

• The previous year, Republicans backed the 22nd Amendment that limited any future President to only two terms

• This meant that Eisenhower could not run again in 1960

Eisenhower’s Farewell Address

“…In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together…”

Um, what was that…?

• What do you think that Ike meant by that?• What is surprising about hearing

Ike say these words?• Do you think that this message is

still relevant today?
