Being a child or teenager today is not easy, the rise of cyberbullying, teen suicide, self harm and eating disorders amongst young adults has hit alarming numbers. This talk is to create awareness of the different social media platforms that are out there. It includes tips and advice on how to help your child or teenager become aware of what they are doing online and educate parents on the world of social media.

• 1.7 million use Facebook via smartphones

• Average 280 Facebook friends - 79 pages (130 worldwide)

• 27% over the age of 15 uses Twitter

• 43% of 15-24 yr olds have Snapchat - 50% use it daily

• Two thirds of the country is on a social network.

• There are 5.4 million mobile phone plans active today.

• 57% or 1.6 million have a smartphone.

• Facebook is over 10 years old.

• 35% of people that are using social media are posting videos on Youtube

• You need strong self Esteem

• Inner Confidence

• Do not seek external validation

• Self Awareness

• Professional Conduct - no private info

Focus on the positives

Ask your children to share who they follow online - bloggers etc. Why do they like them?

Talk to them how they feel about their idols / news events.

Their idols are not necessary role models.

Build (and keep) trust

Don’t over-react (in-front of them)
