Happy Spring!
April is here and Spring is in full swing! It’s time
for sunny days, cool nights, and April showers. We
are all extremely excited about the activities that
spring brings with it. The city begins to explode
with fun things to do everyday. This month I’ve
already penciled in Redbud on the 5th and 6th.
This event is so incredible. Thousands of people
come out to participate in the 5k, 10k, 2 mile
walk, and biking events all to raise money and
awareness for The Anna’s House Foundation.
Also, I’m really looking forward to ACM@UCO
Rocks Bricktown. This great event is happening on
April 11th and features several great bands playing
live in Bricktown, headlined by Moby. Don’t miss
this event, it’s free to the public.
In our April Issue this month we did a fantastic
photo shoot with famous local artist Josh Sallee.
The shoot took place at Remington Park who
generously opened up the grounds for us to shoot
anywhere, most of which is normally off limits to
the public. Make sure to check out the photos and

On Friday April 11th Bricktown will be stirring
with life. That evening at Chesapeake Arena the
Thunder will host the New Orleans Pelicans. Just
a little ways down Reno Avenue at the Chickasaw
Bricktown Ballpark, the Redhawks will be hosting
the New Orleans Zephyrs. People will fill the
streets and sidewalks. Parking won’t be easy,
but everywhere it will feel alive, because that
very same night 80 bands from the Academy
of Contemporary Music at the University of
Central Oklahoma will invade upwards of a dozen
venues throughout Bricktown for one night only,
culminating in a party with Moby on the decks at
the Chevy Bricktown Events Center.
ACM@UCO Rocks Bricktown began 5 years
ago and has more than doubled in size since its
inception. The event marks a year-end celebration
of talent—both new and old alike—that has grown
out of or developed along with the Academy of
Contemporary Music at UCO. The idea was that
the students would take Bricktown over and show
them what real music sounds like. The event
has been embraced by Bricktown as a whole,
and has seen a lot of benefit from the festival.
Since the beginning, ACM@UCO has brought in
international headliners to draw a crowds and
help connect the larger OKC metro community to
music coming locally out of ACM.

It is a celebration of the family tree. The ACM@
UCO family tree is a large one already, and it has
seen and continues to see exponential growth
each year. The school is an important part of the
current Oklahoma Music Renaissance, one of the
primary developing grounds for a new generation
of Oklahoma music happening at all levels across
the music spectrum. For years, the Academy
has demonstrated a sustained and increasing
influence within the larger Oklahoma City music
scene and will likely continue to pave the way for
both emerging and established artists alike.
The party will last all evening with stages at

to experience other culture and to step outside
of the typical food and drink realm most of us are
accustomed to.
Come ready to move and groove to the sounds
of Geoff Scott Band, providing the live music for
the evening. They’re back at it again after they did
a superb job at last years Oktoberfest and Beer
Sprocket. Be sure to grab your Beer Sprocket

Tickets are available now through Friday

Tickets are very limited so be sure to pre-buy

From Malty to bright, from light to dark, from
bubbly to gentle, from acidic to sweet, 100
different world-class beers are making their way to
Choctaw, Oklahoma. The Annual Beer Sprocket,
by the Rotary Club of EOC, is set for April 12, from
4 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is a special food and beer
event that takes place in the “German Hub” of our
state. Each year, vendors from all over bring in
drinks and food for a tasty celebration.
Meet at the home of the infamous Choctaw
Oktoberfest (Choctaw Creek Park Pavilion). Tickets
are $50 per piece or there are Sponsor tables for
eight for $500. The reason for this event is to not
only introduce those to the tastes of many different
beers but to come together to raise money for the
Rotary Club of East Oklahoma County. The Rotary
Club of EOC is constantly raising awareness and
giving back to the worldwide eradication of Polio,
3rd Grader’s First Dictionary program, Bucks for
Bikes with the Salvation Army, Water is Life Straws
and Shelter Boxes for victims of Natural Disasters
Worldwide, and for the tornado victims right here
in our own state.
This is a great time to come out and enjoy the
springtime, make new friends, spend time with
those you know, and partake in the tasting of
these world-class beers. Old Germany Restaurant
and Turek’s Tavern will be two of the main
food providers, in addition to, a few other local

The Heartland Flyer has been traveling between Oklahoma City and Forth Worth, Texas for almost
15 years now. Millions have traveled on the train between the two cities and there is a buzz about a
possible ride that would carry passengers from Oklahoma City to Tulsa. This is a region that has been
deprived of service for more than 46 years, the Eastern Flyer has hope that a trip between the two cities
are needed. The state Department of Transportation has received great feedback and comments urging
for the rail plan. However, there are a few downfalls to the desire. The track is aging and not in a modern
condition, this means that the trains are only capable of reaching 30 miles per hour, making the trip more
than three hours (doubling the driving time along the Turner Turnpike). A Tulsa connection still seems
plausible and a sufficient addition to the rail service that connects through Kansas City and eventually
the rest of the upper Midwest. The demand is there, we just now have to wait and see.

and will be bringing in a substantial amount of
revenue. The project is projected to have a $31
million fiscal impact on our local economy. Not
only will TopGolf be an entertainment destination,
but it will be a place that is creating jobs. They
plan to hire roughly 450 people to complete

Seven land runs took place in Oklahoma,
between 1889 and 1895. It was strange. Land
runs don’t happen all the time. There may never
be anymore land runs. Of the seven Oklahoma
land runs, the largest was in 1893, but the most
prominent of these was the first: the Oklahoma
Land Run of 1889.
A cloud of dust rose where the home-seekers
had stood in line, and when it had drifted away
before the gentle breeze, the horses and wagons
and men were tearing across the open country
like fiends. The horsemen had the best of it from
the start.
It was a fine race for a few minutes, but soon
the riders began to spread out like a fan, and by
the time they had reached the horizon they were
scattered about as far as the eye could see. Even
the fleetest of the horsemen found upon reaching
their chosen localities that men in wagons and
men on foot were there before them.
-from “The Rush to Oklahoma,” by William Willard
Howard, published in Harper’s Weekly, May 18th 1889
I went to Lincoln Elementary School. During
my time there I participated in a historical
reenactment of the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889.
I think it was 4th grade. All the girls wore bonnets
and all the boys wore overalls. Everybody who
had a Red Flyer brought it and we turned them
into covered wagons. My dad got me 4 wooden
poles and some string to stake my claim. The two

Guernsey Park may just be the best new restaurant in Oklahoma City. It is tucked in behind several
businesses on the north side of 23rd on a small street that gives the restaurant its name, Guernsey Ave.
Walking in the door I was impressed with the modern decor and clean lines of the restaurant, only to
have my immediate impression surpassed as I was escorted to our table in the second floor dining room
with large windows that present a fantastic view.
As all the food was brought out it was easy to see that presentation is rule of thumb at Guernsey Park.
Chef Nguyen, a former apprentice of great Oklahoma City Chef Kurt Fleischfresser states that “He likes
to eat with his eyes first” and presentation is extremely important for a great experience.
Chef Nguyen has done a phenomenal job of combining his background in French cuisine with Asian
inspiration. Most every entree on the menu has the presentation and delicacy of french cuisine paired
with the ingredients and flavors of Asian cuisine. Guernsey Park also offers a excellent selection of Sushi,
Sashimi, Salads, and delightful dessert menu.
Here is everything we had at Guernsey Park, and would recommend every one of these dishes:
•CrabDip - This great starter is light, refreshing, and very delicious. A combination of crab meat,
avocado, cucumber, shallots, bell pepper, jalapeño, and cilantro presented over ice and served
with thin butter crackers.
•GuernseyParkRoll - Signature roll for the restaurant that is so flavorful it has no need for soy
sauce or anything else. Inside this roll is crab and cucumber, then topped with yellowtail and tuna,
enhancing it with citrus togarashi sauce, scallions, lemon slices, cilantro, and wasabi tobiko.
• TempuraShrimpRoll - A simple and good roll made up of tempura shrimp with cucumber, cilantro,
jalapeño gastrique, and tobiko in a lime aioli.
• TogarashiTunaSalad - Sashimi grade tuna, seasoned with togarashi, seared rare with an orange-
fennel salad in a ginger dressing
•DuckBreast - a 7 oz portion of duck breast marinated in five spice and slowly rendered to medium,
then finished in a honey-soy glaze. Served with arugula-quinoa salad in blackberry vinaigrette,
blackberries, grape tomatoes, and lemon almonds.
•CurrySalmon - Pan seared curry salmon on crispy potato hash with red bell peppers, eggplant,
and onions.
•CremeBrûlée - Classic french creme brulee consisting of a rich custard topped with crystalized
caramel and fresh fruit.

Music in Oklahoma isn’t a career, it’s a lifestyle.
There’s a culture to it. It happens in bars and clubs,

If you look long enough in the right places, you

We asked Josh to do a photo shoot unlike
anything he’d done before. We’re trying to bring
some kind of fantasy to reality, because that’s
what we do. For Josh it’s a kind of pretend, too.
He is composed of many parts. Sallee’s video
for “Switch Lives” demonstrates this. It’s about
multiple perspectives and multiple personalities.
Sallee is a cast of characters.
He is wearing a black blazer and black fedora
next to the track, watching the races. The man
behind the camera pointed at Sallee is his friend
Lord Van Osdol, the director that brought the video
for “Switch Lives” to life. I’m taking notes with my

running schooling races.
Matt Vance, Vice President of Racing &
Wagering at Remington Park, leads us through
the facility, into the middle of the paddock, and
introduces us to two easy-going jockeys: Jimmy
Brooks and Larry Payne, one wearing a jersey with
blue diamonds and the other in a jersey with red

of nonchalance.
Oklahoma has been a pioneer in the American
Quarter Horse breed for the last seven years.
According to Vance, the American Quarter Horse
started out as a cow horse that some good ole
boys wanted to start racing. They were sprinters,
a beautiful horse with strong legs and lots of
intelligence. And they were a little dangerous. The
horses paced around the paddock as the jockeys
mounted and led their horses through the tunnel
and out onto the track for the post parade. The
schooling races are to acclimate the animal to the
routine: post parade, canter, load up, off they go.

A lucky opportunity after the 18th ensures better financial returns by the 20th.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)A new Moon in your ninth house at the end of March and through the early part of April heralds the beginning of a new chapter in your perception of life generally. Sudden meetings with people who have a broader and deeper understanding of life will fascinate you, especially between the 2nd and the 8th. You will however need to accommodate your desire to travel for some sort of educational or spiritual pursuit during this phase of the year.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) Venus pushes you to achieve greater happiness in your relationships between the 6th and 12th as you strive to attain your ideals this month. Expect distractions and problems associated with your finances. In particular the 9th, 16, 21st and 23rd could be complicated and you need to keep your wits about you when dealing with others and handling money.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)This month make sure you have the requisite
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)The Sun is powerful this month but in the hidden part of your horoscope. Take pleasure in your own company and don’t feel coerced into being with others if you don’t want to be. Nevertheless, you will have ample opportunity to continue engaging others and enjoying dinners, outings and other one-on-one social endeavours throughout this month. Sometime around the 9th be careful of your health and avoid speed at any cost.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)You’ll be able to win the hearts of many during the coming month and with Venus transiting the upper part of your horoscope you’ll be able to mix business with pleasure in a balanced way thereby opening up many new connections. Profits are strong and some unexpected earnings will surprise you. On the 6th, 12th and 16th there may be opportunities for increased cash flow.
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)Being with likeminded friends will feature strongly in your life this month but try not to take your eye off the ball where work and professional matters are concerned. The Sun in the higher part of your horoscope signifies success but you may be doing too much and adding that extra social agenda to your list may tip things over the edge.

strength, information and skills to attempt a task that is a little out of your depth. Excellent negotiation skills on your part are obvious on the 8th but you need to change elements of the agreement by the 15th due to an oversight. Power tripping on the 21st warns that it’s best to side step those who are out to black mail you emotionally or financially.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)A new regime of diet, health and workplace activity is important if you are to find balance. Life may be edgy and your nerves may be shot. An eclipse on the 15th shows you should regenerate your spiritual energies and this is best done alone. The additional eclipse on the 29th brings to the fore your relationships and with Mercury involved, important communications emerge especially after the 23rd.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)You want more out of life but possibly don’t have the energy to expand the way you wish. Sudden changes in your routine on the 2nd and then again on the 20th mean that you need to be prepared for some mental tension. You have better luck in your relationships and can resolve any emotional struggles around the 25th.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)Home affairs are strongly accentuated this month so anything to do with real estate, spring cleaning, fixing things in your home environment, etc will be on the top of your schedule. Lucky opportunities occur for you around the 18th with Venus and Jupiter and Pluto giving you the intuition and energy to seize on lucky chances. Romance and affairs of the heart after the 20th also spotlight your amorous nature.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)Opportune events take place between the 18th and 26th with Venus and Jupiter in excellent aspect. Travels, romance and other speculative manoeuvres you may make should work to your advantage by the 23rd but be realistic in your expectations. Be cautious around this time when you're likely to be excessive and also find yourself in an irritable state.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) Mars is retrograde and therefore issues surrounding relationships will be tough especially if someone is doing back flips on you - just when you’d planned on a certain course of action. The 3rd till the 5th will be an uncertain time in which you will be second guessing yourself. Debts will reach an unmanageable level if you aren’t careful this month.
ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) You're out of sync with your spouse or partner now and this relates to differences in your attitude to life generally. Don't push your opinions; listen to others compassionately. Believe it or not this will help you in business and give you additional financial opportunities you may not have expected. It's best not to do too much physically between the 9th and 20th as challenging Mars energies may cause overstrained and injury.

The wheels are spinning faster, faster, the music is getting louder, and the bodies are getting stronger: welcome to Moxie Ride! Meet Melissa Davis, owner and instructor at Moxie Ride in Oklahoma City. Melissa, a previous real estate investor, wife, and mom of three decided it was time for something new a few years ago. Melissa played tennis in college and led an active lifestyle her entire life. She was on vacation in California and walked past a Pilate’s type studio that had resistance bands hanging from the ceiling and an idea clicked. Melissa took the scary plunge into leaving her typical life and job behind and creating Moxie Ride! She had always loved spin and thought why not combine exercises for a more of an overall body workout, think of it as kicking up the cardio a bit. For her personal workouts, Melissa focused a lot of plyometrics and spin. She spent the next few months and started incorporating various body weight, resistance bands, small hand weights, plyometric and callisthenic exercises all into one. Just wrapping up its second year, Moxie started out with 18 bikes, they have grown to 30 and the hope is to soon have up to 50 bikes. Melissa is always looking to keep it fresh and new. She wants to continue evolving the business and growing into a larger fitness community. From the beginning, she said she wanted to make Moxie a fitness community more than just a place to come and go. Her favorite part of the job is being able to meet all the people and see everyone come together to ride. She explained that everyone comes in for different reasons whether it be for a calorie burn, stress reliever, or to meet new people. She strives to make it a place for a fabulous workout but highlighting that special social aspect. Melissa wants to make it known that the bikes are for everyone! Each individual controls his or her own workout. Whether you’re an outdoor biker, to someone who has never been on a bike, everything is customizable to your comfort and strengths. Moxie is truly for anyone and everyone. There have been many success stories so far. Melissa’s dentist for example, has lost 35 pounds and that was just in the first year alone in a complete total body tone up. Melissa can’t picture herself doing anything other than instructing and running Moxie Ride. She took the risk and it was worth it all. Classes are offered seven days a week and at various times. If you’re in need of true cycling apparel or fitness apparel, stop by because they carry it all. Walk-ins for classes are welcomed, but it is recommended to sign up online to reserve your seat in advance. Be sure to check out their website for more information and the class schedule. www.moxie-ride.com or call (405) 286-9888.

Meet the man behind one of the latest crazes taking the city, the Plaza District in particular, by storm. Adam Jones, owner and instructor at Paint N’ Cheers, didn’t have the traditional start to art that most would imagine. Growing up dyslexic, things weren’t always easy for Adam; he had to push through school and wasn’t really taken through traditional schooling that most kids today would be. He used most of his time to draw and this carried over into his later education, like high school. In High School, he was told he wouldn’t go onto college because of his SAT scores. Adam knew he wanted to go to college and began taking his drawing seriously and competing, eventually landing him the award of being one of the top 300 artists in the world for his age division.
Adam defied all odds and received a four-year scholarship from Oklahoma City University. He would soon meet his wife and life would get going after he graduated with his BFA in 2009. Adam’s wife and co-owner of Paint N’ Cheers, Stephanie, dragged him to try out for a show at the time on Bravo Network called Work of Art, similar to Top Chef. Adam was chosen for the top 35 but two weeks before the call date, his life took a dramatic turn for the worse. He was hit by a car as he was crossing the street and he barely made it out alive. He was pronounced fatal on the scene but later revived at the hospital. His spot on the show fell through due to the unfortunate events, and led him to bartend at a little gastropub in Cherry Creek in Denver, CO. While he was bartending, women and men alike, would come in and stop for drinks before or after they attending a painting class down the street. The idea clicked for Adam, he would be moving back home to start something similar.
Paint N’ Cheers, located in the Plaza District, is honestly “cheaper than therapy.” Artist and non-artist alike come together for a fun night of creativeness while enjoying a diverse group of people. The most rewarding part for Adam is seeing the smiles on people’s faces. It’s truly a positive outlet and escape for participants. Adam is really focused on giving back and continues to do fundraisers each month. It’s the perfect spot for birthdays, girls’ night out, parties, or just a deviation from the typical night. Paint N’ Cheers has just been overhauled and expanded. What are you waiting for? Sign up today!
Check out their website for class scheduling and announcements, www.paintncheers.com or call (405) 524-4155.
